Food

  • TESCO VALUE BOIO
  • burger king and regulation Kebab
  • Pizza Express serve up some pretty lush grup
  • stable cafe
  • mmm.... food. er.. Waitrose, Tesco's,Marks nd Spencers... +more
  • BARBECUE KING ON READING ROAD IS LITERALLY OUR VERY OWN BARBECUE KING - GOD BLESS HIM!!
  • pizza, curry, chinese take aways all over wokingham
  • The Hideout is a good place to go of a weekday lunchtime - so long as it's warm enough to sit outside, and assuming you can find it. Good, cheap Thai food. The pasty shop isn't bad (better than almost everywhere else outside of Cornwall).
  • Watch out for that kebab van near the holt school.. you might eat ok, but i keep on catching them picking their nose or going for a piss behind the van or behind the bushes for further reasons... AND THEY DONT WASH THIER HANDS!!!
  • Theres a few good chippies here, golden valley, and the haka chineas is ok
  • take aways are ace!
  • The best Chinese? Haka. The best chinese after a hard night in Reading? the China Garden. Best Kebab - Barbeque King (just in the opposite direction to home!!) Fancy a curry after the beers? Taj Mahal (If Pickard and the rest of the old forest boys haven't taken all the seats!!)
  • Curry curry and hmmm MORE CURRY! my favorite place is The Royal India it does a mean Phall ;D
  • loads of food places but not many any good. let me take you on a trip First we have the pasty shop -crap service the ginga woman is rude and bossy she cant keep any staff (not suprised) and by the time u get it its cold. theres the patisery which is good great service with a smile( and a wink if u know what i mean)nothings to much trouble there unlike that ginga at pasty place. we also got greggs hot food not recommended- they seem to have a problem with the ovens? and theres applebys - the owner stavros mmm well he sports a great mullet .If your lucky u can sit next to the resident nutter whos called PADDY the window cleaner-he is barking im sure its his water they make the tea from? try the thei-the teak house, what a load of hype!if there open you can experience the original thei experience NOT slow service slow everything exept cash bundled to the council nudge nudge
  • Rose St. An excellent restauraunt serving a la carte food in a chic environment. A must if you have a few hundred pounds to blow!
  • Applebys is the dirtiest place i have ever seen but it is an important part of wokingham, with out wokingham would turn into a ghost town and poor old greek god sally applebys would have to do hes womanising somewhere else
  • There's some OK food, but I'd recommend the Kebab van down by Firstbowl - especially if you want the 'diet' option - guaranteed runs every time!
  • A couple of little Italian jobs and loads of curry houses make up the restaurants in Wokingham - Haka isn't bad chinese takeaway
  • tescos cafe (cold,burnt,value shit)
  • The Kebab van on Reading Rd, between St. Pauls an the YOuth Centre
  • the taj mahal indian cuisine is the ultimate in curry houses. i've never tasted a tastier curry. try the chicken pahl, this is too hot to put on the menu!
  • We tried the new Thai Restaurant where Lucans Bistro used to be, Food was great but very pricey,
  • Two sausuage rolls for a quid an 5 pence. Available at greggs. Used to be 95 pence ohhh. Also known loacally as "liquid Meat" your'll see, taste why !
  • Assam - Nepalese and Indian. Go there. Very good. Taj mahal - very friendly staff armed with lighters. Balti - better food than the taj but waiters are a little more serious. Wokingham Tandoori - avoid Pizza Express - gorgeous home made pizzas. Yummy.
  • Applebys:- Go there if you like eighties greek style Mullets. I found my first grey pube the other day............In a burger from here!
  • Nuff Indians, innit? All quite pricy but good nosh. There is a Burger King drive-thru. Best Chinese Takeaway is China Garden next to the station. Employee of the month works there and the Chow Mein is tops. In the centre, Appleby's has a prime location, but no decent food. The staff are all hairy, especially the feamles. Not for the faint hearted or the sober.
  • My name is ANDREW BINGHAM son of JOHN.W.BINGHAM,and he owns "LUCANS BISTRO" THE best place to eat in Wokingham, but you had better hurry to get one last meal cos the BANK is forcing him to close, they have no heart. So if you like good food, good drinks, and the best host in town, get to "LUCANS BISTRO" NOWWWWWWWWWWW
  • The new Cornish Pasty shop on Peach Street (opposite Applebys) serves really good pasties. Yum yum.....
  • Marylines Resatuarant at Cantley Park - recommed the Ostrich streaks and quiet atmosphere. Rose St wine bar - excellent food in a really small restaurant.
  • Tescos is without doubt the centre of the universe foodwise, but watch out as there is an M&S being built on the site of the old Waitrose
  • There is a wicked kebab van by the Holt School, where they put mint sauce in with the chilli sauce. It's dead nice. There's also a drive thru' Burger King over the fence from Aztecs.

Pubs

  • The Grope, or Hope and Anchor has recently changed management, and seems to be on the up, definatley worth a visit. Keep away from the Rose in the town as once you are inside the sticky carpet will keep you there.
  • wokingham is the probably the best place in the country to do a pub crawl.although many are dirty old mans pubs, theres about 10 pubs in the town centre alone, leading to firstbowl the bowling alley which is open till 1.00am. the lord raglan by far being the best pub with a lively crowd. this pub has quite possibly the best juke box selection i've ever seen. stay away from such pubs as the roebuck and the v-bar unless you have a skinhead and support chelsea. these are ultimate fighting pubs. ar
  • The Leathern Bottel may be a little out of town but it is a great pub. The beer garden is the biggest and best in Wokingham and is heaving right from april to September. The staff are freindly and always happy yo help and theres even an indoor kids area. Check out quiz night on a Tuesday for free chips and the chance to win free drinks and money and watch out for theme nights and BBQ's in the summer!
  • Ye Olde Leathern Bottel, bit out of town and full of the woosehill crowd, good quiz on tuesdays, kids area is cool, friendliest pub I have been in, new managers taking over soon, should be interesting.
  • Well a pint in Wokingham Cricket club has been £1.90 for quite a while and this ain't Fosters, but superb Grolsch ! oh perhaps you can get good beer somewhere else ?
  • BIG HAND MO'S is the only good pub in wokingham First bowl is also blazin
  • plenty enough to support everyone
  • The White Horse. Tom, I love you, mate! Keep that pub lovely and we'll keep coming back to fill your coffers! At the risk of being barred from the Horse, I would also recommend the Lord Raglan for Pool and Sky Sports as well as LOTS of room and two separate areas. The Broad Street Tavern is a really nice place to have a drink and is usually well frequented. The Redan is not too bad, but sometimes you can play 'spot the legal drinker' and have a tricky game on your hand. Pool is cheaper there than at the Lord Raglan. Oh, go to the Crispin to see Andy when it opens again in March. I would like to say that there are 28 (twenty eight) pubs to test in Wokingham. I challenge ANYONE to crawl them all in one go!
  • The Rose:- Average drinking age 12. The Vic:- Full of gays. Firstbowl:- Good if you like smoking, drinking and late night fighting.
  • The Rose is the pub for the youth element. The under age drinkers should head for the Redan. Rumour has it that they will be serving rusks instead of crisps behind the bar. Big Hand Mo's is good for a pint before you shoot off into Reading as it has pool tables. The Ship is OK. The Broad Street Tavern is new and a bit swanky with a good beer garden and is a good bet for the older drinker.
  • I think that the best thing about Wokingham is the Queen Victoria pub, with it's friendly staff and laid back attitude. The toilets are always worth a visit - I think that anyone would be suprised at how much time people spend in them. They really are a crowd-puller - especially in such a small village pub - I love going in to powder my nose.
  • The Broad Street Tavern has opened recently and the ale (if you like that kinda thing) is supposed to be excellent (Wadworth house). The Ship is still the most expensive pub to drink in and The Redan still full of kids. And as for the Metropolitan......I don't think so......
  • Hope and Anchor is adead loss since its refurb early 1998. Queens head is the renowned home of the anorak just fresh from trainspotting at the level crossing. the ship is busy even on a Monday night. Two poplars have flogged their bar billiards. The only reason to go now is the draught Speckled Hen.
  • The Ship serves a fine pint of Fullers and has a mighty fine quiz on Sundays.
  • You may moan about the Duke's Head but at least you can always get a seat! One thing though.... don't bother with their quizzes if you're under 25 years old...... all the questions are definitely aimed at the slightly older clientele.
  • The pubs seem to be populated by under 18's or perhaps I am just showing my age
  • The Lord Raglan had been about the best pub since the Lethern Bottle was converted into a restaurant...
  • Remember the Molly Millars Pub, next to the station? Well now it's called Big Hand Mo's Good Time Emporium - yes really. Its gone all plastic and plush with mega TVs showing SKY, MTV etc.
  • Check out WTFC club house, great beer reasonable prices friendly staff, good food and a view of the pitch, what more can I say?
  • The Hope and Anchor is getting better, or at least the people who drink in there. Admitedly there's still the odd wanker that gets in there, but much alcohol gets consumed seven days a week & all the Forest Old Boys rugby team drink down there (if you fancy a game get down there).
  • Best pubs: The Queens Head and The Ship. Worst pub: The Hope and Anchor -- it used to be known as the Grope and Wanker when I was at school in W'ham in the 70s/80s. Also try The Dukes Head (Denmark St.?) - another place that was good - had Speckled Hen. The Two Poplars (Finch. Rd.) used to have good beer and a quiet room with a Bar Billiards table in it.

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • Jeff's 'Cafe au Gay' coffee shop. Have a milky one and get your mouth round a chocolate hoop.
  • Cafe 24 Nr Cargo is good for a quick hot chocolate, Yummy! Or Piazza Cafe for a sandwich!
  • a cut little one in the town hall rele bless
  • The italian coffee shop, opposite Boots, does fantastic chocolate cake. And the bald bloke is pretty hot too! 16/01/03
  • Loverly full english breakfasts in the rood side cafe just near coppid beach roundabout
  • APPLEBYS! big up the applebys massive (that old trolley pusher bloke, Sal the owner, his bird, and two random freaks)
  • upper crust was lovely but they knocked it down why oh why?!
  • Appleybeys - Soon to be relocated to Norreys area.
  • The Piazza Cafe does a nice cappu and the Sandwich Bar opposite Forbuoys makes a decent brekky!
  • A couple of coffe shops that are full of middle aged women and young girls who thinks it is classy to have a cappuccino moustache as they finish their shopping on Saturdays.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Wokingham. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Wokingham.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
