  • There are some extremely violent people in Aber so be a bit careful. The Town Centre after 2am at weekends can be very dodgy and best avoided unless you're in a group. The main flashpoint is outside Yoko's at the top of the high street, always trouble kicking off there every single weekend, guaranteed! Aber has a high violent crime rate.
  • sanjiv
  • Aberystwyths claim to fame... had the last case of reported typhoid contracted from ice cream off the pier...says it all really Aberystwyth also the town of closed down, empty shops
  • I work at Threshers near the beach. Great place to work, though boring at times. When you go in find the cider shelves (Near the back of the shop) there are NO Security cameras facing that section, only decoys. Do with this info as you will, I'm resigning in May.
  • really bad beach no sand!!! not much else to do in the day other than the arcade!! or the cinema
  • Views of Aberystwyth: Undoubtely you won't get a better view, in my opinion, from Pen Dinas. Where's that you ask? Nowhere near that tourist honeypot called Constitution hill. Look for the erect phallic symbol on the southern end of Aberystwth and you may be interested in knowing its the remains of largest Iron Age Hill Fort in Ceredigion. The erect phallic symbol is actually a Wellington Memorial made of stone. If you want to know any more take a look for your self!
  • How have they got away with calling that house in Great Darkgate Street 'Ty Twank'?????? That is surely something out of 'Trigger Happy TV'
  • I propose a category called "Stuff We Did Up Constitutional Hill When We Really Should Not Have Been Up There" -I'd have quite a few stories to add to that one...
  • Students. Big thing in Aberystwyth, there are about 2,000 of them every year so lots of them need info on your site. Also it helps/props up the economy (did you know each student brings an average of £5,200 to the local economy} landlords make a killing, but where is best to live, drink and if you have time study. i can give helpfull info if required at Phil@aber51.freeserve.co.uk
  • Informal social group for lesbians, gay men, transgendered and bisexual locals and students. Particularly welcomes "non-scene" and closeted folk. http://www.geocities.com/aberevents/thebeginings.html
  • Being a student here is great - but beware the farmers!
  • Lots of people rubbish Aber. It is small, but if you look hard you'll see the good points. Honest.
  • Web cafe in Pier street-biognosis-lovely staff!
  • I Feel Aberystwyth On The Whole Is A ****hole. I've Never Known A Tiny Town To Be Full Of Such Small Minded Ignorante Fool's. Mind You If You Want A Laugh Go There And Just Rip The Piss Out Of Everyone!! ( They all seem to complain about how crap Aberystwyth is & how they cant Wait to leave) And Even More Fun Is Goin To PierPressure (These People Think Their Really The Dogg's Bollock's). So If You Like A Good Piss Take Go To Aber.
  • it was summer 96 not 86 that the uni bought aleaxandra drew up plans for 24 hour a day work .etc.
  • If you're in need of a tinkle at 1.30am and you cant find an open public toilet ANYWHERE.... visit the castle gardens!! The flower beds there are fantastic!! Very comfy apparently (so says my friend who shall remain nameless... Dilys)
  • Winter-too many students. Summer-too many brummie tourists.
  • taxi's in aber are unreasonably expensive rates from 2.40 to 3.00 quid for just a mile up or down the hill where the uni is located...the drivers will always have something to say and will make sure you enjoy the ride esp if you ask them for info and all. Personally i would reccomend 7's as the cheapest ones
  • Brilliant to be at Uni here- its not a city, but if you change your expectations you can have a top time! And everyone comes back to visit, so you stand a good chance of staying in touch with old mates. Which is nice.
  • "Fool on the Hill" is said to have been written on Constie. Aber Rag was for years the biggest in Europe. World-wide, it was beaten only by Pretoria in Africa! (I speak as a Rag Committee type from 1989 or so!) UCW was the first of the colleges that make up the university of Wale to be formed, built of contributions of pennies from the Welsh people. The National Library is well cool.
  • Commodore Cinema, Bath Street. Not too good at getting latest releases, but completely non-smoking and has good Sunday night features.
  • There are several favourite spots amongst some of us who love to be in this escape from the rest of western civilisation called Aberystwyth.
    • One place is the end of the beach running into the bottom of Constitution Hill where, in a little sheltered bit, there is a very popular spot for beach parties/barbecues - especially when there is one of the gorgeous sunsets - and just where you sit in here leaves you with a view of only sea, sand and sky.
    • The top of Constitution Hill is itself a poular place to watch the sun rise.
    • Top of Constitution Hill -- the "Camera Obscura". If you've never seen one you really have to check out this Victorian-era amusement. And it's free! Move the joy-stick around and spy on friends on the beach or just come in out of the sun! I know it sounds hokey... but it's really neat!
    • At this part of the front there is also a part of road past some bollards at the end of the road which is good for a short skateboard run or kicking a ball about.
    • Mention is made of 'Consti' (Constitution Hill), but at the other end of the prom (south end), there's another nice (and frequently visited) hill called Pendinas, which although a struggle to get up (muddy paths and no cliff railway) does offer excellent views, as well as being able to boast that it was once an iron-age settlement. There's also a monument stuck on top that looks suspiciously like a factory chimmney, but is in fact a monument commemorating the Duke of Wellington, and actually represents an upturned cannon...
  • Aber's best AND worst point is its isolation (geographic and cultural) from the "real" world. It is possible to get to civilization and back in one day (I once drove from Aber to Cambridge and back in a day) but it should only be attempted by highly awake sensible drivers who have some experience of dodgems. The roads from Aber to England are absolutely awful (no dual carriageways for circa 80 miles) and watching out for the many artics which have to deliver to the shops in Aber is a must.
  • Aberystwyth is a great combination of small town, college town, resort town and market town. It's atmoshpere is both lively and serene. I notice you don't have bookstores as a category. My favorites are Galloways and Siop y Pethe. I always come back to the states with a bag full of books. Another category (being a Seattlite) I recommend is places where you can get good coffee. Britain as a whole is a coffee wasteland, but The Cabin is about as good as you can get over there.
