The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
  • BV Liquor Store on Acton Lane looks like your average corner shop. In fact, it's got an incredible selection of wine and an extremely knowledgeable proprietor, Dil. Ask him to recommend a bottle (or just chat about the football). Acton used to be on a river (that's why it became famous for brewing & laundry - both industries long gone). It went down Horn Lane, past what's now Safeway/Morrison and along roughly the line of Crown St/Avenue Road (You can just about make out the valley contours). Walk over the manhole cover on the north side of Avenue Road between Berrymead Gardens & Winchester Street after a heavy rainfall, and you can hear the submerged river flowing beneath your feet.
