William and Caroline Harmer circa 1900 by Theresa Martin (Member 10237320) on 7-May-2009
I am trying to research my family tree. William Arthur Harmer was my great grandfather and was married to a lady called Caroline. William was killed at sea in 1907 and my grandfather was born a few months later. He was also called william Arthur. Caroline must have remarried at some point after this because my grandfather had a half sister called Doris. I do not know her maiden name but she went o... more >>

Old School by Scorpion (Member 10130386) on 16-Sep-2005
As a boy in 1957, I was sent from my home in London to spend a month in a small boarding school in Aldeburgh. It was a wonderful place. Although it was April to May the sun blazed down fiercely the whole time.

I wonder if anyone knows anything about the school - I don't remember the name - and I would like to learn anything about the place.

The school was on the corner of Victoria Road and... more >>

The house you talk about is called Wyndham House. Yes its still there. It was divided into 2 residences, as i used to baby sit there quite often, in the 80s. It has quite a few ghosts too.
Now i think it is divided into flats. Do you ever get to go back to Aldeburgh?

    Hello Selina

Thanks for that. I remembered the name as soon as you told me.

I was back in Aldeburgh for a morning earlier this year. I'd been staying in a hotel for a weekend in Oulten Broad and drove over. The place has hardly changed since I was there in the 50's except that there are many mo... more >>

In August ,1957, I was sent from east London, with 24 other children from the same area, to convalesce at Wyndham House in Aldeburgh. My father had TB and I think there were concerns about my health.

I recall a group of children being left at Liverpool Street station, all wearing name tags, who were duly delivered at Wyndham House.

I have very happy memories of the month I spent there. I hav... more >>

Norman and Robert (Bob) cable were both my great uncles and my grandmother was their sister Olive Cable. When I was small (in the early 70s) Bob and Norman lived in cottages in the High Street and Olive lived in a house on Saxmundham Road. As far as I know, the closest descendent still living is Olive's son Vernon, I don't think Bob and Norman had children.

    Hi Sue,
It's only taken me about two years to come back on this! Can you give me the names of your parents please? I've got Tom Cable and Elizabeth Harmer on my tree with 6 children, but no other details. What did you think of uncle Norman? He used to absolutely terrify me! I really loved uncle Bob though. This is a reply to Jackie Field's question (although its some time since she asked it) The long distance walker (Ipswich to London) is my great grandfather. He lived in Holloway north London and had two sons. He is the brother of James and son & grandson of the Toms lost on the 1850's lifeboat Pascoe.

Query about "Fantasia" building by amanda (Member 10094545) on 22-Apr-2003
I wonder if anyone knows anything about the little detached pink house(?) called "Fantasia" number 29, which is situated right on the seafront in Aldeburgh? Having visited today and in the past,i'm curious to find out whether anyone lives there or what it's used for as I find it so unusual. Many thanks

This house on Crag Path is used as a second home.

  • Re: Query about by Dawn Watson (Member 10200121) on 16-May-2009
Fantasia used to be a sweet shop in the 1940s, has now been brought by a property developer who has added a huge bay window and balcony which make it look like it's about to fall on its face!

i am an architect stident from university of east londo. This year my tutor has picked alderburg as our site. i am doing some research into alderburgh and i was wandering what developments the citizens would like to see...
  • Re: architecture by Charllie Walker (Member 10059841) on 20-Feb-2002
    Marcus
We do not wish to see any developments. There is quite enough gratuitous development in Aldeburgh. We would rather be left alone

  • Re: architecture by marcus (Member 10057443) on 21-Feb-2002
it is strange to hear that, because when we visited and spoke to some of the residents there seemed a demand for a couple of projects, mostly concerning youth, ,or some type of town centre. I also found it intresting that the night fishermen have no facilities available to them...

  • Re: architecture by Charllie Walker (Member 10059841) on 15-Aug-2002
    Marcus
We would like to see a Community Centre, but the more wealthy residents do noy want one.
As for night fisherman, they don't need encouraging as they litter the beach with discarded tackle and litter. Most do not want any facilities other than the sea to fish in
