• The name of Aldershot derives from the 16th century assassination of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Alder, who was gunned down by a discontented Protestant on the site approxiamtely corresponding to the present location of JJB Sports in the town centre. A contemporary chronicler records: "And Archbishope Alder did gon to the Hamp-shire, and there was he slayn in colde bloode by wickede murder with a pistol-gunn. The place of his dying is become named 'Alder-shoote'." This has corrupted into the current 'Aldershot'.
