Pubs
  • Golden rule, the best old mans pub in the village
  • Golden Rule - frequented by hardy walkers and students who dress like them but rarely go further than the door to this place. The bar room is great, with open fire, pipe smoke, dogs and old men falling asleep in piles of dominoes and newspapers. Sandwiches and tiny warm pork pies are served (mustard is vital). Beer is excellent, particularly Hatters Mild, which isn't really a mild, but sounds pretentious. John the barman is certainly a character. And does anyone else miss the amusing pen drawing on the wall above the men's urinals?! The Unicorn - a great pub with great beer and open fire. Illegally huge breakfasts if you stay over night. Used to have the best juke box in the world. Used to serve Fellrunners, which is a great summer beer. Perfect for wet afternoons. The White Lion - Mmmmm... Large pub with little or no soul. Good for meals. Smaller bar room at back is ok unless overcome by people on the racing games... asuming they're still there. Worthingtons was a great beer, especially if consumed with a packet of Brannigans Beef and Mustard crisps. Also served Carling Premier, the only larger an ale drinker can enjoy on a blisteringly hot day. The Royal Oak - Doesn't seem to serve Youngers Scotch anymore and should thus be closed. Good pork pies and mustard, though the aspic has been known to be runny if the day too warm. Don't try to hide beer glasses in the garden - you get barred for it. Odd that. There is a back room for locals, but is only accessible by a pathway only they know about. Churchills - rubbish pub. End. Sportsmans - OK for a pint. Good Boddingtons, good pizza, crap night club. West World - what we called the bizarre western-themed bar in town. It was closed last time I visited. A bit like having a drink in a set off a random startrek episode. Marvellous. But scary.
  • Churchills has got to be my favourite venue for a session.
