  • William Gifford - (1776-1826) became the first editior of the Quartery Revue and is buried in Westminster Abbey. John Ireland (1761-1842) became Dean of Westminster Abbey and officiated at the Coronations of William IV, George IV and Queen Victoria. Richard Carlile (1790-1843) became the greatest fighter for the freedom of the press, freedom of speech and free discussion. William John Wills (died 1861) with BUrke, was the first to cross Australia. Lived at Ipplepen and went to Ashbruton Grammar School. John Satterley (b. 1879 in Ashburton), emegrated to Canada, proffessor at Toronto University & writer for Transactions of the Devonshire Association.
