- we have a lot of builing societies and a New Look and Officers Club. Its quite nice and green in places and Hadley Wood is nice.
- Victoria
- The Old Court Recreation ground! Opposite the Wood Street side of Barnet Church, throught the big black gates. A huge park with loads of "quiet spots", tennis courts down towards the end, a crown bowls green, playground for the kids and of course lots of dog poo!
(It also used to have a massive greenhouse complex with an aviary, fishpond and magic shows. That was 20 years ago though!)
- The fact you can walk through the town centre at 3am with no fear of being raped, murdered, mugged or molested!
- So many take aways and placs to sneak off for a fag so teachers don't see, ha ha
- Very pretty and historical. Good schools too
- Feels like a separate town. Once you get beyond the squeeze (the bottleneck at the church on top of the hill) you could be right away from the Smoke (if you close one eye and have the wind behind you) which is my cup of tea but not everyone's, I know. Good comms to town, though, as frequent tubes take you to Camden in under half an hour, and the West end in 45. Interesting mix of people: retailers often make the mistake of thinking it more upmarket than it is: viz Laura Ashley and others. High Barnet is actually quite an earthy place. It's Hadley to the North East that gives it a vicarious buff. We have the fair, of course, where you can still trade horses as well as get beaten up by the Pykies on the dodgems. The common is lovely, and the woods are free! The market is one of the oldest in the country: 1199. Wet fish stall, which is rare. Newly invigorated hospital, one to be proud of.
For those of us who have to think about these things, local schools are excellent, in particular QE Boys in Wood Street.
- feels like a separate town: not part of the swirling metropolis. Still on the tube, though: arriving by tube from the Smoke is like taking a canal boat through a city: kind of secret and quiet and other-wordly.
- For such a Huge Borough, Barnet offers Little to the Visitor-enough said!
