• Elaine Page used to be Elaine Bickerstaff and she went to Southaw Girls school in Russell Lane N20 - that's a fact - I went there at the same time! She did NOT go to QE Girls. Also, I bumped into Arsene Wenger in Waitrose N20 last sunday morning. My good friend Laura Milligan's father used to live in Hadley (Spike).

• Music Tuition. Unity Music in East Barnet offer music tuition on all musical instruments. They arrange 1-1 and group classes starting from £7ph. They are opposite the Railway Bell pub, near Sainsburys. 020 8440 9339
• When asking your girlfriend if she's had her "barnet" done, stop and ponder the old horse fayre that was held on the site of Underhill Stadium and is the origin of the cockney rhyming slang for hair. Barnet is the highest point between the centre of London and York! Dick Turpin is known to have drunk in Ye Olde Mitre pub! The Battle of Barnet was one of the decisive battles in the war of the roses. Barnet has one of the oldest schools in england situated in the grounds of Barnet College. Barnet College is a couple of decades old, Queen Elizabeths Boys School was granted it's charter in 1573. The school still hold the original document in their entrance hall.

• The market is especially good for excellent cheap fruit and veg. The stall by the St Albans road entrance does rock bottom deals on limited stuff and is generally banged out from first thing Sat. For value and more choice the stall at the opp end is what you want. Cheap fone accessories next to the musical instruments stall. Cheap plants and flowers, some tacky clothes and the usual tat make up the mix. WOULD BE PERFECT VENUE FOR A FARMERS MARKET ON SUNDAY MORNINGS THOUGH. ANYONE WANT TO TAKE UP THE CUDGEL???
• Chipping Barnet is so called because it holds a charter for a weekly market, one of the oldest in the country. Used to be livestock in the"good old days" but now it's mainly old tat. BUT the fruit and veg is ace: cheap and better than the big boys.
• Only Visit Barnet if you have a relative Living there (DOH!)...
• Note for the editor: I am surprised there is no entry for Barnet. Sorry this is a bit thin, but having an entry may encourage others. It goes under "Greater London" (inside M25), though postally it is Hertfordshire.
