Lancashire by Marion Jennison (Member 10243148) on 1-Apr-2010
Does anyone remember what year the County boundaries were changed and Barrow became part of Cumbria instead of Lancashire?
  • Re: Lancashire by Marion Jennison (Member 10243148) on 2-Apr-2010
Found out it was '72 and that Barrow is still in Lancashire, administered by Lancashire and has Lancashire police....interesting!

Obituary search & Cemetary search by Tony Bilsborough (Member 10242156) on 6-Nov-2009
Trying to find details of obituary for William Bruce Glasson, Solicitor and Secretary of Barrow War Pensions Committee in 1919. Died Barrow in Furness 24 February 1919 age 34.

Any one any bright ideas please?

  • Re: Obituary search & Cemetary search by Roger (Member 10085001) on 11-Dec-2009
It's not the obituary and you may already know this but if you search for the name on Google (enclose the full name in quotes), one of the four results is a record in the National Archives that contains this information:

    WILLIAM BRUCE GLASSON.

Admitted June 1912. Managing Clerk with Philip Baker & Co., of
BiiTningham. Joined Sept. 17, 1914, as Private, 15th (Service) Ba... more >>

Birth Certificates by John Wheeler (Member 10237464) on 14-May-2009
Good Morning:

I live in the States, but my father was born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1919, and I need to get an official copy of his birth certificate. Can someone please provide me with the contact information I would need to initiate such a request?

Many thanks.

You can order birth, marriage and death certificates at this link: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/. Full details are on the site. They cost £7 each and you can use a Visa or Mastercard. I've ordered dozens from Atlanta without ever encountering a problem. They are almost always dispatched seven days after ordering.

  • Re: Birth Certificates by John Wheeler (Member 10237464) on 15-May-2009
    Thanks much!!!

  • Re: Birth Certificates by Roger (Member 10085001) on 16-May-2009
I should have added that the £7 cost assumes you have full reference data for the birth (quarter, district, volume and page number). That information may be on FreeBMD for 1919 (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl) but if it's not, it will definitely be available on Ancestry.com for all dates after 1916 (Ancestry is a pay site as you may know).

  • Re: Birth Certificates by Roger (Member 10085001) on 16-May-2009
It looks like there is only one male on FreeBMD that was registered in Barrow in 1919. If this is your father, these are the details you will need to order the certificate:

    Quarter: Jun 1919
    Name: Wheeler John C
    Mother's Maiden Surname: Fenton
    District... more >>

  • Re: Birth Certificates by John Wheeler (Member 10237464) on 28-May-2009
That is indeed my father. I very greatly appreciate the effort. Many thanks Roger!

Edmondson /Wilson. by Wendy (Member 10083752) on 3-Apr-2009
Hi,

Well after years of looking, have now discovered Greta Edmondson had remarried to a Robert Wilson, this possibly took place in Barrow again possible date 1945, Greta died a widow in Aberdeen 1979, they appear to have had a daughter who lived in Sidcup, at least this has given my stepfather some kind of closure as to what become of his mother, but a little more info as to how her life pan... more >>

  • Re: Edmondson /Wilson. by Roger (Member 10085001) on 4-Apr-2009
The BMD indices show that Greta Edmondson's birth was registered in the first quarter of 1909 (Barrow F., 8e, 797). They show that she married Harold Whittall in the first quarter of March, 1927 (Barrow F., 8e, 1211). The birth of two children is registered: Winifred M. Whittall in the June quarter, 1927 (Barrow F., 8e 1011) and Harold Whittall in the December quarter, 1935 (Barrow F., 8e, 841)... more >>

Anyone Heard of this? by phonefun (Member 10234964) on 30-Jan-2009
Funny as anything. All sorts of randoms on it

It's basically a landline telephone number you can ring. 0870 755 0872.

Where you get put into a waiting facility, it then connects you to another caller, you say hello, and they can choose whether to talk to you, or put you back in the queue because they don't like the sound of you or whatever ... more >>
