Hello I am in the embryo stages of setting up a website to help people tracing their family tree in Barton upon Humber in the 19th century.
It is mainly tanscriptions from The Hull and North Lincolnshire Times Newspaper of the 1860's and 1870's at the moment but I am adding to it all the time.
Come and check it out and see if you can find a long lost relative.Thankyou for reading this message.

I’m curious about people in my class at BGS. I specifically remember David Peck, John Lacey, Sandra Nurse, David Twidle, Geoffrey Codd, Elsie Wilford, Terry Bontoft, Ian?Cox. I’m David (Dave) Field. A couple of teachers I remember are Miss Proctor, Mr Millet, and Henry Treece. I’ve been living in Australia for around forty years, where I’m now a writer. You can find out more about me be going to my website - http://www.authorsden.com/daveffield ... more >>

We must have been in the same class as I remember those pupils you named along with some others. Kathleen Lait, Christine Goodman, John Lacey, Graham Carlisle, Joy Ellerby, Susan Smith, June Carter plus many faces come to mind but only first names remembered. I have spent the last 30 years in Canada. I am a resident of White Rock on the west coast a few miles north of the US border

Linda Evans? I don't remember your name. I'd trade pictures with you but I don't have any of me at that age. I can try a mental association thing. When Miss Proctor was trying to get us to understand Macbeth, Elsie Wilford was at or near the right rear corner of the classroom. I was at the other side of the room, about two desks down from the back. Can you remember where you where?
Actually I DO remember the name Linda Evans, but not the face.
Speaking of Macbeth, I vividly remember John Lacey being disruptive in class one day and Miss Proctor demanding he explain what the play was about - we'd been reading the thing for about six weeks. After a great deal of humming and harring, he replied, "Some fellers 'avin a fight."
Miss Proctor wasn't impressed. ... more >>

My maiden name was Pugsley back in those days. Yes, I remember John Lacey. He and Sam Bontoft were usually up to no good in class. I presume they went on to great things once out of school. Can't say they were the happiest days of my life. I was painfully shy probably because I was my full height (5'7")at 13 years old, skinny with unruly fair hair! I don't have any pictures of myself, left them behind in England when I emigrated to this neck of the woods. I remember being terrified of Mr Goddard, with good reason as I think he was a sadist. I always remember him slapping class mate, Vivienne, across the head. sorry I can't remember her last name but I think she came from Barrow. All she did was giggle over a french verb "laver" to wash. If he had done that today he would have been charged with assault. ... more >>

Hi Linda,
Don't remember you, but never mind. John Lacey went to work at the Scunthorpe Steel Works as some kind of engineering technician. I went to visit him from Oz some years back, but the relationship sorted of faded away. I think Sam Bontoft may be a fireman in the Humberside area, but I'm not sure. All I can really remember about him was he was swarthy skinned and could make his nose bleed by blowing his nose, and did so to get out of classes. Goddard was a swine - his nickname was Goster. I've seen him hit kids too. I confronted him once when I got into a dispute with a horrible French teacher who accused me of talking in class when I wasn't. He tried to punish me by ordering me to write out 200 French verbs. I refused and had to face Goddard over it. Apparently he believed me because I got away with it. But I can still hear that French teacher, a tall, ugly Welshman, saying, "You'll do me 200 verbs, boy." ... more >>

'blrlnd' by Iain Brimswall is a social and political light satire having an unmistakable parallel with the late Blair period.

List price is £7.99. Buy it, read it, sell it to a friend for a fiver. (Might be cool to try the Tesco book site.)

Hoping someone out there might have an old photograph or postcard featuring the old candle factory at Barton, which was situated in Cottage Lane. My GG Grand Uncle, William Minto Rawson, owned and operated the factory between 1856-1894, after which it was taken over by the Humber Candle Factory. I would be very grateful to receive any information, or pictures, of the old factory, which I underst and is no longer standing. Kindest regards to all, Denise Douglas (Australia). ... more >>

I just found this site...I'm surprised. I have been there many, many times, I'm from Michigan USA. My Auntie lived there and my cousin. I especially loved the George Hotel and I knew a young man named Colin - you probably want the last name I'll give if someone is fimiliar with anything I'm saying. I have some old photos of The Volunteer Arms pub when Mr and Mrs Phillips owned it. That woul d be late 60's, early 70's a couple times in 80's. My Mom came here from Sussex in about 1945. All my relatives are over there. Mom was actually born in Swansea, Wales.
My Auntie owned the beauty shop. Anybody remember? I love that little town, but I bet it doesn't look like it did when I loved it now. I would love to hear what it's like now. ... more >>

Hello Susie.
I am from Barton on Humber - born and bred there, but I - unfortunately - live in Hull - across the water on the north bank of the R. Humber. I`d love to live back in Barton, and go there often. The George Hotel has i`m afraid, gone to the dogs. I remember all those quaint little rooms where one could sit and have a quiet pint. Now it`s all one big room, and very loud. The best pubs in Barton for a quiet life are The Volunteer Arms, and The Wheatsheaf.

Hello David,
Well, it's been a very long time (a few years) since I've been on here. I had to create a new account. It's so good to hear from someone who is fimiliar with Barton. I adored the George Hotel and The Volunteer Pub. I'm sure things have changed - for the better I hope, unfortunately, I'm not so sure it sound as though it has. I left my heart in England. My memories of England are so great and important to me.
My Aunti Irene owned the beauty shop on the Market Place. My cousin Karen McKay is her daughter.
My friend Colin Blanchard and I and his friend Colin used to go to the little tea shop down the corner. I have pictures still-and a poem that Colin B. wrote. Do you know is he still around or what has beccome of him?
There was also a Conservative Club, I believe that's what it was called. Is that still there? My Uncle used to take us there sometimes. I haven't seen my relatives since the bridge was being built in Hull. I would love to visit again-and hope to in the next couple years. Now, i live in St. Thomas, USVI - just moved here and want to show my husband where I spent so much of my time.
Okay, I know that's alot of information - but I want to reply to your message and if you grew up there we may know people in common. ... more >>

Well Susie - here I am! I don't know what happened to the (23?) cents and red hair slide, or to the years that have passed, but I'm still around and (doing OK I think) living in SW Scotland with my wife Heather who is an artist and I'm (still!) working as a University Lecturer in North Cumbria. I do hope you check this website and we can get in touch again. You sound like you're having a nostalgia attack and I must say my heart gave a leap when I came accross this message thing by accident. The www is truly amazing - or perhaps there's something else going on here? So really hope to hear from you soon. Colin Blanchard. ... more >>

Does anyone know what happened to Tina Peace? She left Baysgarth School around 1986 and went to Grimsby Art School. She used to date a hippy kid called Sam leech. The last I heard she'd married a local musician from Goxhill called Lee Drinkell and now has children. Does anyone know anything about Tina, or the Hippy, or Lee Drinkell?

Hi everyone! I'm an old Barton lad whos migrated across to good old NI but bad luck for everyone who knows me, im coming back! (groan)
Anyway the point of this entry is to try and get as many lovely Barton people to sign up as being interested in having Bartons telephone exchange upgraded to a "Broadband Ready" state.
(please bear in mind that you arent committing to anything at all but simply showing an interest)
We need to bring Barton forward and so by getting enough people to sign up as being interested we should get something done pretty soon. Check the link for more details and please if possible tell your friends and family to have a look too.

Heres hoping we can push those numbers up!
If you have any suggestions or queries then please dont hesitate in contacting me (dan@happylobster.co.uk) ... more >>
