Cafes and Coffee Shops
  • The Lounge in Battle High Street this is a proper coffee shop, delicious tasting coffee and snacks. Really nice atmosphere
  • My advice is just drive on through without stopping. The tea room on the opposite side of the main road to the Abbey is more like a school cafeteria ~ service of the 'you do-it-yourself' kind. The restaurant leading to the Abbey car park will have empty tables, yet turn you away as being full. Others just shut-up shop mid-afternoon. Pathetic, so do not even stop.
  • Martels (halfway up on left) does the most amazing freshly made sandwiches and the loveliest carrot cake!
  • Totally disagree with the comment about The Pilgrims Restaurant not welcoming people other than the oldies or families. Everyone is welcome, as long as not rude and obnixious to the staff. There's no dress code and no-one judges people with 'shock horror' different, colourful hair or dress sense. I work there so I should know. I suggest you try us again.
  • Someone's mentioned the Pilgrim's Rest: our advice is, if you don't belong to one of the main tribes in the area (older person, parents with kiddies etc) and are sporting interesting hair and (shock, horror) a nose ring, you'll have difficulty with a) getting served and b) being spoken to at all by the staff, even if you have your mother in tow. Is this the 21st century or what?
  • Pilgrims Rest by Abbey, a couple in High Street & by the library. Usually chockablock with fossils and other living dead. Waitresses in PR wear nice kinky black and white uniforms you normally only see in porno vids.
  • Lots of small old ones - very old. Beams, fireplaces, lots of atmosphere. However, never expect ANY of the coffee shops to have ANYTHING available just because it's on their menu. And don't expect the staff to inform you of this. They may just take your order, disappear, and leave you sitting around waiting for hours, and when you ask, they say 'well if we haven't got it we can't serve it, can we?' I have experienced this repeatedly in Battle's coffeeshops. Regard it as part of the charm. If you want quick service, or are hungry, well, the nearest McDonalds are in Hastings and Bexhill.
