The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
- Bekonscot Model Village - definitely worth a visit, even if it does take 3 hours and an ordnance survey map to get there from Cookham. About as well signposted as MI5 HQ. As long as you're not deterred by the PRIVATE: KEEP OUT notices in the carpark (which incidentally seems to belong to the church), there IS a food kiosk, (hidden round the back) and I hear that all of the rather high £5.50 admission fee used to go to charity, which is a comfort. Still we did enjoy it. Biggest eye-opener: there is a whole other Beaconsfield we never knew existed. Sorry chaps, we're still sicking to the old one in future. Highlight of the trip? A greengrocers called Chris P. Lettus...
- The good thing about Beaconsfield is the lack of crime. I know it has it's share but after living in Luton for fourteen years I know where I would rather be. In Beaconsfied you can at least not worry so much about your car being deliberately scratched on a daily basis or it being stolen about twice a year. That's the normal way of daily life in some parts of bigger towns. And that's only the lower end of the scale of crime ...
- if you're looking for a good nearby punk band check out skirtbox in wycombe or catain everything in watford
- The premier squash club in South Bucks is in Beaconsfield at 48 Shepherds Lane Tel:01494 671307 for a brochure. If you visit www.beaconsfield.co.uk there are more details in the sports section.
- EVENTS - A Correction
Doesn't appear to be an appropriate box for this. Won't swear to it, but I thought the annual Old Town street fair was on May 10th each year, not the 6th.

- Shops: The Chapter House for books (miles better than Smiths). New Town also has the usual Woolies, Boots, etc and the regular high street banks and building societies.
- Schools: between New and Old towns are Herries prep school (watch out for those orange caps!) and Beaconsfield High School for Girls (ideal for tottie-spotting if you're Polically Incorrect).
- Transport: the train station is in the New Town - the Old Town is about fifteen minutes walk up the road.
- Misc: there is a film school in the Old Town which really is world famous - students come from all over, even from the US (I know because I once met an American student of the school while on holiday).
- I understand that the school is to move to Ealing at the end of 1997 and in its place will probably be a leisure centre which at the moment is planned to be known as the Millenium Centre.
- Catering Hygiene Specialists is one of the major employers of local people
- Places Nearby:
- High Wycombe
- Slough
- Amersham
- Update: The Beaconsfield Film School is still there and looks like it will be for some time to come - a leisure centre was just built in Holtspur (nearby) though
- Beacosnfield has had a thriving Rugby Club since 1952, have a look at our web site at http://www.brfc.org.uk
- Couple of points re Beaconsfield: 1) Oakdene School went bankrupt and was closed several years ago 2) The Model Village is called Bekonscot and is well worth a visit. Thanks
