Still looking for info on a lost relative of my stepfather.
Greta Whittall ( nee Emondson) born 1909 Barrow-in-Furness, left or was kicked out of the family home due to a crises not known as my stepfather was only four years old, never heard from or saw her again, knows nothing of her family, just really trying to find what become of his mother during the time she went, her birth certificates states William Edmondson b: 1888 as her father, Angelina Edmondson ( nee Harvey) as mother.
1911 census shows her as an only child at that time aged two, living at 89, Smeaton Street, Cumbria.
it is thought that she may have went to London or Scotland,
could have remarried had more children whatever.
any info would be much appreciated ... more >>

| need info on a Greta Edmondson please!

Hi,
I am not sure if I have been pinpointed to the right place but i am trying to find some info on my stepfather's mother, her name was/is Greta Edmondson born about March 1909, we think in the Barow-in-furness area of Cumbria/Lancashire, she married a Harold Whittall and they had two children, a boy & a girl, the boy is my stepfather also called Harold, well Greta & Harold divorced when my stepfather was 4 years old, he & his sister was brought up by their father Harold and an aunt, and they never saw or heard from their mother Greta again, my stepfather is in his 70's now and obviously realises that his mother may no longer be around, but he really would like to try to fill in some of the empty gaps, he wants to know what become of her over the years, she may even have married again, he thinks that she may have moved to the London area, possibly had more children, if anybody can help to fill in some of the missing years of Greta Edomdson for her son, it would be wonderful. I really don't know how else to go about finding what happened to someone like this.
many thanks. ... more >>

Came across this Nowhere site and thought it would be great make contact again with any of my friends from Beckermet. Does anyone know of the whereabouts of Kate or Tom Tuohy. Last time I met Tom was in the late 1970's when he had finished at the Courtauld Institute and was working in Florence. I have also heard that Kate had tried her hand at chicken farming in Australia and was a one time workin g at the West Cumberland Hosp as a physiotherapist.
Not heard anything of Gillian Booth since leaving Wyndham school in 1969?
Where is Christine Tyson (her father owned what was Fellview Caravans) if she is out there hi Christine would you marry me?? Sense of humour hasn't improved!!
Anyone else around from those days, anyone know anything about the above people?? ... more >>

| Foster care
|
by Eric (Member 10034976) on 10-Jun-2001

I have written this in the hope that fewer foster-carers will fall foul of the more unpleasant, legalistic side of social services. I have tried to keep it impersonal, and professional, and have kept to the facts rather than pure gut reaction. Because of this, there is much that is missing, there are no anecdotes, and names (of course) have not been used, neither has gender, in order to protect bo th ourselves and the children we fostered over the years.
First, a bit of background to the problems that finally decided us to resign from fostering:-
The first instance was when we were concerned that a foster child in our care was showing a sexual interest in our own young child. Despite several weeks of asking for this foster child to be moved on because of this sexual interest, we kept getting fobbed off, until we finally had to take the child, ourselves, to the house of a relative as we were getting so worried about the effect it might have on our own child. Bear in mind that social services *themselves* make a point of saying that the welfare of the carer's own children are of prime importance.
The second foster child was less of a problem in that respect, but as our child was about to start the same school as the foster child was at, and the foster child, sadly, had a slight mental illness, we again asked for a move to protect our child being perceived by other pupils in the class as the sibling. Again, social services never reacted for weeks, and again, we had to sort the problem out ourselves with the help of another carer.
Both of the above cases were "short-term" care, only expected to last for a few weeks while long-term care was arranged for them. They both stayed with us for almost a year.
We then took on two siblings for long-term care. For two years, the placement went well. Then, shortly after our support worker left, and while the children had no social worker to support them, problems arose.
We tried to explain the problems to social services, and to get help, but no-one could provide any support due to under-staffing. This situation went on for about six months, getting steadily worse, until staff were available. By this point, we now realise, the placement had broken down, yet social services would not move the children (due, I suspect, to a lack of foster carers in the area).
Despite attempts by social services and ourselves to recover the situation, it continued to worsen - due in no small part to inappropriate support from the service. Things came to a head some time ago, when the constant criticisms, useless "support", and the children's behaviour brought me close to a nervous breakdown.
This was when we discovered that social services have a more worrying side. A report on the problem was written by a social worker that was in many instances innacurate - some points even verged on the libellous. Yet carers have NO right to challenge any statements made and have them removed from the record - all they can do is write their own response, explaining that such-and-such was wrongly worded, that a certain point was an exaggeration/misrepresentation, etc. For instance, if the report said "the carer's car had bald tyres and was dangeous for children to travel in" that would stay on the record, even if the worker had mistaken a "spare parts" car, that had never moved in the last 10 years, for the family's main transport. The carer can only add their own comments to the end of the file, not have the inaccuracy removed.
Statements such as these are virtually un-challengable due to a neat little phrase - "In Good Faith". So, if a social worker writes an innacurate or libellous statement, it was done so "In Good Faith", and as such, it is entitled to stay in any report that may be written.
Although we have not suffered badly by inaccuracies of this sort, I am worried that the "carved in stone" nature of these social worker's reports could lead to totally innocent carers being accused in such a way that their lives are made a misery by it. There seems to be no comeback, no legal rights to aid and protect the carer, nothing to prevent a social worker (who may have a dislike of a carer) from writing damning reports.
So, think before taking on fostering - thoroughly check what small rights you have, talk to other carers in your area.
Finally, if you have children of your own, do not foster. Do not even consider it - we heard recently that if a foster child makes allegations against your own child(ren) they may be treated as criminals, arrested and questioned by the police (whatever their age), even if the allegations are false. I am just glad that we got out of fostering without this nightmare happening to us. ... more >>
