Come Around to our town. Bedford
A national first for Bedford will be launched on Friday September 23rd when the plans of the Business Improvement District (BID) project become a reality.
Discounting parking and £1,000 in shopping prizes will be on offer - together with a warm welcome from the newly appointed Bluecap guides.
Under the BedfordBID scheme businesses in the town voted to pay an extra levy - above and beyond business taxes - to fund their own improvements. Together they will create a pot of £450,000 a year - and the first signs of how that money will spent will be seen on September 23rd
*The BedfordBID has subsidised the cost of parking in the town to just £1 from 10.30am to 4.30pm on every Friday between September 23rd and Christmas.
*The BedfordBID has financed a major promotional and advertising campaign with billboards, bus sides and £1,000 shopping prize promoted by Chiltern 96.6 FM Radio and local newspapers.
*The BedfordBID has paid for a team of Bluecaps who will be on the streets every shopping day from September 23rd onwards meeting and greeting visitors and advising them of how to make the most of their trip to Bedford. The BedfordBID has also financed the cost of one of two extra community support officers dedicated to the Town Centre.
“People coming into the town shopping already enjoy improvements such as the new all-year markets and special events like the Victorian fayre in December which were encouraged by the Town Centre Company. From there the TCC went on to win BID status for Bedford - the only county town in the country to succeed in such a BID,” explains Mo Aswat of BedfordBID,
“Now businesses are investing their own money into making Bedford a better place to visit - we want the people of Bedford to show their appreciation “Come Around to Bedford” as our slogan says.
“There are many incentives on Friday September 23rd - not least the £1,000 being given away in a shoppers’ promotion and the discounted parking every Friday between now and Christmas
“But we want people to come shopping the rest of the week too - and look out for the Bluecaps - they are here to make people feel welcome and feel safer when shopping in Bedford.
“We want people to think about shopping at Bedford first - not Milton Keynes. We have a greater variety of small, independent shops and it’s a prettier setting. The newly refurbished car parks and speciality markets also make Bedford a better place to visit.”

*Discount Friday car parks from September - River Street, Lurke Street and Allhallows multi-storeys. From October Queen Street. All from 10.30 am - 4.30 pm.

- Bedford is best during the summer - lots of lovely looking people, lots of green areas, a clean(ish) river, and there is pride around town - the Pride in Bedford days are great when things like the swimming pools and cinemas are free for a day!
- birds in the summer!!!!!!!!!!
- There is nothing good about bedford, I must have done something really bad in a previous life to end up here.
- this town has major amounts of muff, just hit the town or river during summer. being in a valley and the lowest point inland in the country it has the benifit of being a few degrees hotter than most places and has the least ammount of rainfall, and with the help of global warming palmtrees now grow openly about the place. there is some exelent scenery along the river and marina. being so mixed there isent much atittude now and people are always up for a party, just viset the river festefall in may or lazy sunday in june and yourl see.
- I live here
- Bedford Park is brilliant for relaxing, but the river has to be the best. I have run around it many times while I did rowing and its beauty was the only thing that stopped me from hating the place. One rowing session in winter we went down there and it was snowing so we all went running across the frozen punting lake and throwing snowballs around!! Brill!! Plus, if you row on the river you'll always get photographed by some American tourist.
- The river's quite pretty, it's got Swans, and the villages round and about are very nice.
Trains to London go very regularly so it's very easy to get out of Bedford, which is a bloody good job being as how it's one of the dullest places I've ever had the misfortune to live in.
- Lidl - what a great supermarket. The Limehouse - what IS that all about? Also Bedford's's only 8 miles from Carlton, where The Fox pub runs its legendary pub quiz every Thursday night.
- The women. In the summer, so many gorgous women can be seen on the high street.
The music & the bars. It has potential to become quite a club & pub central town. But the council dont like it (even though it does attract people from MK & other areas), all it needs is a few more decent clubs and promotors who are willing to spend and bring in good DJ's. Afterall we are so close to London. Only Suburban beatz would do this. Big UP Mark!
- I lived in the Bedford area for two years, the people are great and I've made some really good friends there too.
- CHICARGOS IS THE IN PLACE TO BE ON A THURSDAY NIGHT FOR A CRACKING DOUBLE YOUR MONEY OFFER, YOU PAY ? THEY GIVE YOU DOUBLE BACK TO SPEND. THE ATMOSPHERE IS BRILL THE MUSIC IS 60'S, 70'S, 80'S AND FANTASTIC. NO VIOLENCE AND CERTAINLY NO BITCHINESS COS EVERYONE IS 20'S PLUS. SATURDAYS NIGHTS ARE BUSY BUT THE ATMOSPHERE JUST GETS BETTER THE MUSIC IS FANTASTIC IF YOU LIKE OLDER MUSIC NOT LIKE THIS BLOODY HEADBANGING STUFF CALLED GARAGE!!! DECENT MUSIC, ATMOSPHERE AND BRILLIANT FUN , YOU'D BE MAD NOT TO GO THERE!!!
- The people are great, and so is the atmosphere, just start talking to someonw and you'll make friends no probs!
- The diversity and lack of snobs - of course EVERYONE ignores all the little public school boys and girls who concentrate on nothing more than sipping Pimms down the Executive Club (sad place) while still unwrapping the car Daddy has just bought them for their 12th birthday - you should all fuck off up Eton!
Other than that though people in Bedford are great - we've got our psychos, weirdos, crackpots and mad people but everyone else I have met in my hangout spots are geniune and nice - therefore avoid all places other than Esquires and the Hobgoblin.
- Cafe Bliss Small villages nearby to visit on a sunday afternoon
- When I'm at uni, I have a real laugh here, and miss it all when I go home. I love Bedford's Library.
- Excellent music provision at all levels, good medical provision, easy to get to London, Oxford, and Cambridge.
- Claire Court this is like the cosmopolitan hotspot of the whole town, with the two coolest shops in town and a place to sit down and have a fag.
- The Embankment, The Music Scene (any one remember the Aubergine Boys? Wankas), Carl Bergen and "Buy us a pint" routine in the Bear, the Commercial Inn and the old Teddy Boy who does impressions at the bar, easy to crash parties and free peanuts at the Wellington.
- Very near to Maulden Wood where the bluebells in springtime do bloom the heart with gladness...
- The Bedford Music Festival in 1990! Got lucky while living there for a year.
- Bedford MAG.(Motorcycle Action Group)
- I fell in love in bedford , with bedford high school girl (1979)I still love you caroline, where are you your not at the grange , ravensden are you.
