The Best Things in Bideford, Devon*
If you're around, be sure to check these things out
You can tell us more about Bideford.
The Best Things
- Not Living there
- WIZARD SIGNS ARE THE BEST SIGN BUSINESS. NOW BACK IN BUSINESS WITH NEW OWNERS !
- Butterflies , baby wear and gifts in Butcher Row,
- New years, plenty of pubs to choose from, laid back and relaxed approach to life, friendly
- The Big Sheep at Bideford. And the Dinosour and Wildlife park
- its a lovely friendly town. new yr eve is fantastic!!!
- the sea, the beach, the estuary, the bridges, the steep hills!
- the new quayside is pretty good, theres a fountain and everything, you could almost believe you were in a nice devon town, till you turn around and see the decaying town behind you. there are plenty of bars and churches if you like either of those avenues are to your taste
- More chilled/relaxed pace of life. Beautiful surroundings, you don't appreciate these things until you've moved away from the area and then visit it again. Close to the beach!
- GOOD SOCIAL LIFE IF U MEET THE RIGHT PEOPLE
- One of the best things about Bideford is the number of car drivers who stop for you if you're waiting by the roadside. That makes you feel guilty if you don't actually want to cross.
- The pubs and the people
- Bideford Heritage Railway Centre - something for the town to finally be proud of. A wealth of information and award-winning attractions. Found just the East-the_Water side of the bridge, up the stairs.
- The history of being 'the little white town'
- I tried a pasty from HAPPY PASTY on Allhalland St and I have to say it was the best I have had - anywhere! Not only do they do traditional fillings but others such as Lamb & Mint, Steak & Stilton, Bacon & Leek plus several veggie options. I think the people who own it have not been there too long but they seem to have turned it into the best pasty shop in town.
- just being near the sea and hockings ice cream bloody handsome
- The restored railway in East-the-Water, at last something for the town to be proud of.
- Some very good pubs (Johnnys bar & crabby dick's, revolution (formerly route66, four seasons...) if it's not too full).
Nice & close to Barnstaple, where they have shops that sell things people want to buy.
- The best thing about Bideford,is that I left in 1978.Unfortunately,I have to visit my relatives occasionally, which means I have to endure a narrow-minded bunch of inbred rednecks, whose attitudes really pissed me off in my first 25 years living there.I shall,of course continue to visit my surviving relatives until their demise. On my visits I have witnessed the same small minded attitudes that have been passed down from the previous generation.
- The Bideford Rugby Club! Yes, those guys in the blue shirts who think that they run Bideford! Funny thing is they usually do! Go to a game on saturday at the club down bank end and then go on out to see them celebrate a rare win or a usual loss!
Plus, watch in wonder as they display their fetish for dressing up as girls! The funniest thing you'll ever see! Mucho men revealing their femine sides!
You'll usual find them in Ceasars Palace on saturday nights! They are the besr looking guys in town and they know it!
- Bideford's New Year celebrations are the best! Everyone should try to experience one at least! There is not a single normally dressed person to be seen and the atmosphere is electric. It's always best to take out your own drinks though coz it gets so busy and you don't want to waste your time queueing for drinks all the time!!
- Bideford is the capital of the Single Mother.
- Great place to go on a pub crawl 'cos there are so many of them!
- Edgehill forest is a nice place to chill out and contemplate just how many schools (three) are in the vicinity.
- New Year's Eve at Bideford Quay
- You can drive through it in 5 minutes so you need never know you went there.
- A lot of weird people live here.
New Year's Eve is one of the best night's out in the country!
The Hocking's Ice Cream Van on the Quay- mighty fine stuff.
- One of the best olde worlde bookshops in the country Nicholas Nickleby in Grenvile Street - just near Discovery Records
- Slow pace of life, friendly natives
- Local Pubs, Friendly people. sun if youre lucky
- The best thing in Bideford is the Budo Dojo in Torridge Hill run by Sensei Francis, 8th Dan Hanshi. Go here to study Judo, Aikido, Kendo & much more. Worth a visit. Champion Software Ltd. Hockings Ice Cream, THE BEST.
- Bideford isn't too bad. I should know I lived there for three years! The 'Little White Town' as it is known, has the only open quay dockside still in operation in the UK (as far as I know). The Oldenburg sails from there to the island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel. It is the island's only link to the outside world.
- Bideford also houses one of the best dyslexic schools in the country. Grenville College is sited on one of the many hills and as I went to it, I can say that it lives up to its reputation.
- The most impressive part of Bideford is the old Bideford bridge which links Bideford to East the Water. The archways in the bridge are not all the same size, some are narrower than others. This was because it was payed for by the local parishes and the smaller ones could not afford to make as big an arch as a larger parish with more money.
- Bideford is an easy place to get to as the North Devon link road now passes through it and this means that it is an easy drive from the M5.
- The best thing has to be the numerous pubs - you have to admit that for a little town there are an amazing number of places to get pissed on a Saturday night (and I should know, I was down there with the rest of Edgehill every week.)
- And, the other fantastic thing just has to be The Big Sheep - surely that should be worth a mention.
- There are some good surfing spots close by, ok Westward Ho! isn't nothing that special, but what about Spekes Mill Mouth down the coast?
- Discovery.
