I am looking for information on Childrens Homes in Birkenhead around 1915/1920. My father Harold McWilliams and his siblings were put in a home around the above dates as his mother & father could not look after them, his elder brother John got them out of the home as soon as he could (this information from the son of John). They lived in Cleveland Street between 1912 & 1915. Any help locating the Homes and the where abouts of records would be appreciated.

Hi,
I spent time in two Childrens Homes in the Birkenhead area in the 1950s. One was at the top of Park Road South, where the road divides to Ashfield Road. Right in the middle of the divide, and long gone, was the Manor Grange Childrens Home, run by Nuns. It overlooked the two roads from its gardens.
The second Childrens Home was on Overchurch road, right opposite the Overchurch Estate, now private homes, alongside the Moreton Spur. That also was run by the Nuns.
Hope this might be of use,

My nana was Elizabeth Mary Cullen and her and her siblings were in Manor Grange and Overchurch childrens homes in the 40's. The other Cullen children were Doris Cullen, Margaret Joan Cullen, Stephen Barry Cullen. Does anyone have any personal experience of these homes they could share? Does anyone recollect the Cullen children? Where might I go about researching more about these homes?

It is highly likely you were there at the same time as my nan as she was there from 1939 - 1951. Ring a bell? Elizabeth Mary Cullen. :)

| Old Photos of Birkenhead

Hi
I was wondering if anyone can help. Me and my sister are putting together a "this is your life" type album for a family member and we are looking for old photographs from around birkenhead.
I'm looking specifically for old photographs of Birkenhead town centre, Higher Tranmere and New Brighton from the 1950s, through to the 80s.
In particular I am looking for photos in and around Oliver Street in Birkenhead. It no longer exists - but used to run parallel to Grange road (it lies beneath the open car parks at the back of Grange Road where the new ASDA is being built).
I have found some stuff using google - but its very limited.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks ... more >>

Hi,
As far as I can remember in my old age this is how it went:--->
on the left hand side, from the top going down to Argyle St were:->
Stan the butcher's shop,
Bryants sweet shop,
Robert's tool shop,
Then ->
O'Kells clothes shop,
Candlish the green grocers,
And I think there was an opticians near the bottom somewhere.
Hope this helps.

I worked in the Direct Meat Co Butchers that stood opposite the Bakers Arms, Exmouth Street in 1956 and as far as Memory serves O'kells was on the left as you walked from Claughton Road toward Watson Street/Conway Street Junctions.
O'Kells was a double fronted shop that was four or five shops down in those days and lasted into the 1960s when the slum clearance destroyed it all.
Hope that helps,
Bryan

Hi my name is Anne and in 1950 when our mother committed suicide (not known by us at the time) my two sisters (aged 5 and 8) and I , aged 10, were taken from our home in Pentrefelin, Snowdonia to a home for girls somewhere in Birkenhead where we were to stay for several months. The Headmistress of the home / school was a Miss Beard. One of our fellow in-mates was Ethel Pollard. We all scrubbed flo ors and cleaned everything on a daily basis. It may well have been a workhouse, I`m not sure. trying to establish its name and where it was located. Thanks for any help you can provide. ... more >>

Mother Borgia was head mistress at the time and I remember some of the teachers. Mr Clark. Mrs Walsh, Sr Vivian, Miss McManus, Miss Cowie. Does anyone remember them or me?

Hi Francis,
Sorry for the delay in replying - I have only just read your reply to my initial email. Oh my god, I've found you!! My dad will be so pleased and we too would love to meet you. Uncle Les, who passed away last year would have loved to have met you - if you ever go to Chester you may see a bus that has the name "Les Rimmer" on the front of it - the bus was named after our uncle as a tribute to him, as he was a manager of Arriva buses. Les had tried to trace you when he was alive but didn't find anything out, so as a last resort I thought I would try this website and can't believe I have found you. Do you still live in the Birkenhead area? I go out with my dad (your uncle Malcolm) every Saturday and it was only a few weeks ago we went to Landican cemetary and we went to your dads grave and I said to my dad when I was standing by the grave that I wish we could find Francis - it seems somebody must of been listening to me!
I couldn't believe it when I saw your reply - I had to read it twice to make sure the reply was for me - I am over the moon - what a great Christmas present to find my long lost cousin!
Please email me back to let me know how / when we could meet up - my email address is luke664@btinternet.com.
