Right in the middle of the divide, and long gone, was the Manor Grange Childrens Home, run by Nuns. It overlooked the two roads from its gardens.
The second Childrens Home was on Overchurch road, right opposite the Overchurch Estate, now p... more >>

Hi there, I am still looking for my brother, who was in Overchurch children's home in 1953/4. He was called Stephen Evans, was about 18months old, and was adopted 1954/5 ? Linda.

  • Re: Childrens Homes by Lisa (Member 10271334) on 5-Mar-2012
My nana was Elizabeth Mary Cullen and her and her siblings were in Manor Grange and Overchurch childrens homes in the 40's. The other Cullen children were Doris Cullen, Margaret Joan Cullen, Stephen Barry Cullen. Does anyone have any personal experience of these homes they could share? Does anyone recollect the Cullen children? Where might I go about researching more about these homes?

It is highly likely you were there at the same time as my nan as she was there from 1939 - 1951. Ring a bell? Elizabeth Mary Cullen. :)

  • Re: O'Kells Exmouth Street Birkenhead by Bryan Douglas-Matthews (Member 10267934) on 28-Nov-2011
I worked in the Direct Meat Co Butchers that stood opposite the Bakers Arms, Exmouth Street in 1956 and as far as Memory serves O'kells was on the left as you walked from Claughton Road toward Watson Street/Conway Street Junctions.
O'Kells was a double fronted shop that was four or five shops down in those days and lasted into the 1960s when the slum clearance destroyed it all.
    Hope that helps,

    Bryan
