Pubs in Bootle, Merseyside*

The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call

You can tell us more about Bootle.

Pubs
  • The Railway pub in Hawthorne road next to Kirkdale station BEST PUB IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Run by a frightening woman named Mo. Lock ins were mandatory (you don't get away that easy sonny Jim)They still had the old bell pushes in the parlour, press them and a barmaid would come a running to take your orders. I remember one Saturday afternoon during the world cup in 1982 "This time w'ell get it right" by the England team blasting out over and over from the juke box as we all danced on the tables and spun the old brass chandeliers. I lent down and rang the bell and one of the (many) horny barmaids came in and without batting an eyelid looked up, took our order and returned 5 minutes later and had to stand on tip toes to pass our drinks up. Pure class, as was the totally naked Tottenham fans dancing on the bar for our entertainment after losing to Liverpool at Anfield. But the classiest thing of all was the mens toilets! you walked out into the back yard and used the urinals that were up against the wall. No roof, no walls, no door just an open air urinal. When it rained you got piss wet through and you were overlooked by at least half a dozen neighbouring windows 0

  • THE MERTON IS AMAZING PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER LIVERPOOL BECAUSE IT IS WELL KNOWN.
  • The priory
  • as an old git answering, merton, sullivans, my personal fave "the jawbone"
  • A big goodbye to the old BA on Orrell Lane, burnt to the ground. Old centre of the orrell park area of Bootle community. Scene of many drunken people, kids hangouts and fun fairs throughout the 80's And Secrets (alsoknown as clouds and Allsions) nightclub, 50p a pint, chicken basket meals and a whole world of physically challenged women, and people of a youngish age, trying to get in on ID's made from cereal boxes. Gone to that big neoned sign nightclub heaven.
  • the MERTON pub on merton road, sullies and yates's on stanley road the K ( krazy house) plummers on hardman street bar med by queens sq bus station, garlands off dale street

  • 'Ma Kents' and the 'Salt Box'(Linacre Road) are in Litherland and not Bootle as stated in report.
  • The Queens, Madigans Lighthouse, Yates, and if really desperste The Winnies.
  • Wetherspoons has opened a branch in Bootle, underneath The Triad. Very nice it is too, decent ales, good food and, best of all, NO JUKEBOX ! You can actually hear people talking to each other, this is no bad thing !. Their menu is fairly standard stuff I suppose but it is done well and is terrific value. Their latest deal at the time of posting (July 2000) is a curry, (many different ones to choose from, Korma to Phaal) poppadums, naan breads, chutney, and a pint of lager ... all for 4.99.
  • Wetherspoons has opened a branch in Bootle called "The Wild Rose" so named after Gladstone's speech, in which he says he has sen the wild rose grow in the very heart that is Bootle. Good wine from about a fiver a bottle, decent ales and NO JUKEBOX !
  • Sullivan’s re-opened in July 99 after an extensive refurbishment due to a fire. They serve food 6 days a week and also of a night time cater to all music tastes with DJ's playing music from the60’s through to the current chart and dance scene and on Thursdays it’s live entertainment with the regions best bands (CRUSH, SUPERSUB, VIZ JOHNSON THE CHEAT BEATLES) and many more. The current resident DJ’s are Pete smashy Stuart, Flatty, Mark Magee, Andy Laird, and regular guest appearances from Kev Seed from Radio City 96.7. Local footy celebs have also been known to frequent the venue too
  • The Mel-Inn (They've got a wide screen and everything!) The Wharf on Merton Road (Try the beer garden!) The Rubber Duck (The only footballers who go there play for the pub's Sunday League team) Nina's (That strip joint)
  • The Cat and Fiddle is getting very busy Ex manager of the Jawbone Full of Office sorts
  • THE MERTON ISN'T AS GOOD AS IT USED TO BE, SADLY. WHERE IT ONCE HAD THE BEST BAR STAFF IN THE NORTH WEST I.E. MAZZA, JIMMY, DAMO, GAZA, SIMMO 1 + 2, AND THE SNIFF, IT NOW RESEMBLES A HOME FOR RETIRED CIRCUS GIBBONS.. ALTHOUGH THE LADS STILL POP IN NOW-AND-AGAIN TO MAKE CAMEO APPEARANCES, IT WILL NEVER BE THE VIBRANT, WITTY AND STUNNINGLY CUSTOMER ABUSIVE SETTING THAT ONCE HELD THE COMMUNITY KNOWN AS BOOTLE TOGETHER..
  • THE MERTON ISN'T WHAT IT ONCE WAS, SADLY. THE MERTON USED TO HAVE THE BEST STAFF IN EUROPE - JIMBO, MAZZA, DAMO, GAZA, SIMMO 1 + 2 AND THE SNIFF..A FEW OLDIES STILL REMAIN - ADAM (THE WAH), HALLIGAN AND NOGGS..ALTHOUGH IT WILL NEVER LIVE BACK UP TO IT'S REPUTATION AS THE MOST ABUSIVE CSUTOMER/STAFF PUB IN EUROPE..EVERY NOW-AND-AGAIN THE CONTEPRARIES WILL MAKE CAMEO APPEARANCES JUST TO KEEP THE PEACE WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF SCALLIES TO DECENCY WITHIN BOOTLE..
  • TRY RENAGANS ON ORIEL ROAD GREAT BARMCAKES AND A QUITE PLACE FOR A NATTER ON A FRIDAY LUNCH TIME
  • THE RUBBER DUCK,STRAND ROAD BOOTLE,A QUAINT LITTLE WINE BAR DOWN BY THE RIVER,HAS A GREAT SELECTION OF BEERS AND A FINE ARRAY OF EXPENSIVE WINES, CATERS FOR A MORE UPMARKET CLIENTEL AND THERE IS ALWAYS A POSSIBILITY OF BUMPING INTO A LIVERPOOL OR EVERTON FOOTBALLER OR MEMBERS OF THE CAST FROM BROOKSIDE AND I THOROUGHLY RECOMEND IT
  • Ma Kents has been there forever, it just wasn't called Ma Kents until Brian took over
  • Places to drink in Bootle include Yates Wine Lodge where all the teenage girls drink(!), the newly renovated Merton and Sullivans.
  • The area to the back of the Strand, known as Bootle Village, is quite popular too with five pubs in the space of about 150 yards.
  • Good pub with good live music (especially if Alternative Radio are on!) is the Salt Box on Linacre Road. If you pay a visit say hello to the Manager, Geoff, a nice chap.
  • A new pub in Bootle on Linacre Road: "Ma Kents" well laid out pub excellent decor - spacey even when its full! They've got loads of oldie world relics on the walls (its like being in River Island) and some great beers & live music!!
