Pubs in Brentwood, Essex*
The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call
You can tell us more about Brentwood.
Pubs
- spread eagle
- don't think the castle ever hosted The Pistols, but their bass player Glen Matlock later played their with his band, and Mick Ronson (spiders from mars) was also there.
- LOADS!!!
- sruffies turned into to scruffy sports bar but they aint won my heart just coz they stuck up a couple of tv screens coz they av stopped survin stella. the owners are also palace fans.... we've run the ammers strongold of brewry time up the hill many times...
- Who wrote the article on PUBS in Brentwood, its most amusing, funny, but I am a loss to know why ONE got left out, The Gardeners Arms, it has more goings dodgy dealings than the others this person mentions. He also mentions ZAKS mens clothes shops and called the owner a W...KER is this really allowed?
- Yup, the Castle used to be quite cool, and authentic once apon a time, but it has gone to the dogs, gypos, and drug dealers...
look closely and you will find the same desperate 'hangers on' from back in the 80's 90's; they are still there in the hope they may be transported from the crushing darkness of B'wood to megastardorm?!
Young Lads/girls will try on there first social rollerskates on here... only to be befriended by local drug dealers with a pencent for catching young before they wise up!! so watch it...
The landlord is from 'up north' and simply don't give a monkey's about what really happens in here(illegal or not!)!
The castle is a 'Mr q's'pub which is owned by the same South African guy's who set up the Wetherspoons Pub chain, and Pizza express... These means it's ultimatly gonna be devoid of any character!
Ok; they tried to revamp it's image so as to appeal to the preclub audience of Sam's, but this just sucked out the little soul soul it has left. Other bars in the area (Slug, O'Neill's) have strangled the market, so the Castle has nothing more to offer to it's punters than cheap booze and pool tables which is a shame?.
If it were more true to its roots; it would carve a niche for itself through it old music/band connections and live gigs... It is rumoured that Sex Pistols and Led Zep played here(way before the pool tables).
Oh yeah, you can still see the old toilet skylight above the front door as you come in!
The Sign outside is not actually a picture of a 'castle' but is in fact a 'Barbican' which is the protective entrance to a fortified Castle! Oops
- Least visited pub has got to be the Cherry Tree off Warley Hill .... I bet you didn't even know it existed....
Most visited pub, is probably the White Hart in the High Street.... the whole of Brentwood congregates there on a Saturday night...
- White Hart
- TERRIS BAR - Jurassic Park I.
WEST ONE - formerly PARKERS - Jurassic Park II.
SAMS - Jurassic Park III.
SLUG & LETTUCE - posers' paradise. You may just spot Jodie Marsh here socialising on a Friday or Saturday.
- The Litten Tree Pub - better known as The Litter Tray. If you are under 18 you get a good night out, simple.
- Teriss Bar - Hart Street, more commonly known as Jurassic Park. Definitely for the over 50's. West One - formerly Parkers. Okay on a Friday if you are bladdered and love 80's soul/dance.
- the castle get served
greebo tho
- The best pub in Brentwood is O'Neills, although a chain it's surprisingly friendly. It needs more seating though and is best during the day for a flick through the papers.
- Where to start....Litten tree,Hobgoblin,O'Neils,The Swan,The Artichoke,White Hart,The Castle,Gardeners Arms,Black Horse,Rose and Crown,Sir Charles Napier,Terrace Bar,Tower Arms,Robin Hood and Little John,Holdens,West One,Brewy Tap,Essex Arms and Harvester.Nadine
- Litten tree prob, but dunno, more of a wine bar person myself!
- the Castle is the pub to go to if you're not a fan of pubs that play sh*t music at ear bleeding volume such as the Littern Tree or the Slug & Lettuce. There's a plentiful supply of pool tables in the Castle and its a 'regulars' type pub. However be warned if you're not a fan of Goths/Grugers/'alternative' types then you'd best avoid it.
The Hutton is also not bad- pretty friendly pub, serves cheep food. Can be a bit quiet though.
- All puts in Brentwood are for gay essex boys. Wanna proper night out go to the Romford massive aiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Bar West One (formerly Parkers) - where all the golden oldies hang out - it's trying to be too much like the Litten Tree! Has a small dance floor but wicked Friday nights for Funky House and Club Classics - although very recently it has gone down-hill as there is a new DJ who plays cheesy tunes.
- The White Hart, Litten Tree, Swan, Terris Bar, Hobgoblin, Sir Charles Napier, O'Neils, slug & Lettuce, Artichoke - the list goes on!!!!
-
The Castle on Ongar rd is still a pretty divy alternative pub- far better than any of the tedious trendy pubs on the High street in my opinion. Definitely the place to go if you enjoy the odd game of pool.
- Litten Tree is the place to go. Watch out 4 wallis. Youngsters used to get in the Artichoke, but now its the hobgoblin.
- Ahh the Slug and Lettuce - what can I say!!! Commonly known as the Slag N Lettuce - well worth a visit on a Friday nite if you own more snide Gucci than you know what to do with and dont mind parking yer porsher in the car park behind! More commonly known for the regular weekend attraction of Chuckie n Tanner - ask anyone - they'll know em!!
- The White Hart new Private owners, NO underages entertained, (The Land Ladys a tyrant) and the Lounge Bar is back to being a place to sit and chat with friends. The Ale Bar is great for music, shots and a really good time. The Doormen are still friendly (except when it comes to no I.D's)
- Other than repating what everyone else has said thousands of times over (despite many of them needing to a) grow up and b) get thier facts straight) theres not much more to be said about the vast number of pubs in a town that clearly has a problem with alcohol and violence, the Slug and Lettuce is a fantastic pub.. offering great decor and atmosphere. However drinking in there may consist of four of you sharing a slightly warm bottle of coke unless you already have a) a lottery win or b) an account with harrods. It is unbelivibly expensive.
- The Charles Napier. A proper boozer.
- Go to the Green Man Pub in Herongate it has a fantastic atmosphere and serves excellent food too. It also won CAMRA pub of 1999 in South West Essex for it's excellent ales. The people that work there are brilliant!
- loads of em in the highstrret. if you want a REAL pub go to the star in ingatestone - and mean a real pub.
- OK, when I used to drink in Brentwood it would be the Castle or the White HArt.
Once I went to the Gardners Arms near St Frances Hospice Charity shop. I was very drunk and so were my friends, there were only 6 other people there, including the twins who used to collect trollies from Sainsbury's and some bloke called, cant remember his name but he was an alcohlic. Also years ago the good intent. it was someones good intent to close it down, and change it to Cafe Uno!
- Slug and LEttuce by far the best! Try upstairs, cool can see all the black roots on all the blondes!!
- Hollands - reason being is that its not in Brentwood and is too far away for people from Harold Hill to come in and smash up (like they do with everywhere else in Brentwood). The Litten Tree is the worst - Bouncers are more up for a fight than the punters in there. The Hutton has to win the award for "Most Gypos/Mingers in one area" though. Shame the carpark isn't bigger for their caravans.
- Pubs, oooh, I dunno if we have those, oh yeah wait, there is the Charles Napier, then the White Hart, errmmm, oh and the Fire and Firkin, the Littern Tree, the Hobgoblin, the Artichoke and then the best apub of all, the Castle!!
- They've started I.Ding the Castle but not in the daytime when everyone from my school goes up there - just to play pool mind.
- Lets get more trendies into The Castle on Ongar Rd.! Ban the grungers!
- Alma Arms Navestockside, 18th century freehouse, serves delicious home made food every day, just 2 miles from town centre and nestles deep in rural countryside, worth a visit.
- We are now spoilt for choice. White Hart is for the under age, the Littern Tree is for all the poser people, the Hobgoblin is a relaxed older crowd, the Firkin is undefinable and to enter the Swan you need your pension book. The Castle is still to be avoided and the artichoke has given up and turned into a restaurant.
- The Hobbit's Pony's head
- The white Hart, or the Brewery Tap, definitely not the Artichoke, which is for the teenage drinkers
- The Hutton in Shenfield. Totally kicks donkey, the place to be on a Saturday
night, sometimes there's even more than 10 people there!
- There's the green man, which is packed in the summer
- The White Hart (on the High Street),quite dressy and the bouncers are nice, although they look intimidating. Just opened this year, the Fire & Firkin nearly opposite The White Hart is really great and you can quite often find the bar staff on the tables! Soon to be opened - the Global Netcafe - set to have quite an impact. The pubs mentioned are the most popular, although if you fancy a quieter drink there's some good pubs in Shenfield - the Green dragon, the Hutton and the Eagle and Child. Also a nice quiet drink can be found in the villages on Ingrave and Herongate (about a mile away from Brentwood High Street) in the Boar's Head, the Green Man, the Olde Dog etc.
- Castle (x-biker pub, trendies invaded, Boooo!) - Busy White heart (specialising in Friday night fights) - Busy Fire and Ferkin (new one) - Very busy at the mo, only got in once!
- The White Hart in the High Street is pretty good - can't move on a Friday or Saturday night - used to be TJ's but was shut down (v. dodgy dealings going on).
- The Castle down Ongar Road has gone downhill - used to be a really divy biker/ goth/punk pub - then the trendies discovered it, did it up and it's just not the same.
- Lots of little country pubs
- A couple of wine bars - Parkers down by the station (think it's still called Parkers - owned by Paul Parker), and Hollands down by Shenfield station (owned by Pat Holland - late of Leyton Orient, come on you O's).
