If you want to meet the pilots' then head down to Eastham Ferry / Eastham Country Park where the planes come in so low you can ask the pilot for an autograph!
Mellors on the New Chester Road with Mrs Mellor was a good place to buy penny sweets. I think it is a restaurant now.
