I'm now living in NZ but do visit Bulkington when i visit Mum and Dad occassionally. Dad, John Grant, plays bowls and drinks on the Chequers sometimes. If you know him say Hi.
Loved living in Bulkington..was born and bred there and went to school in both schools before going to Nico. I have an entry on Friends Reunit... more >>

It seems that not a lot of people visit this site, which is a crying shame.
This is just to say that the new book Bu'kin'ton Kid, a Bulkington Boyhood in the 1940s is now available at £5.99 from practically next door to the Chequers at Atmosphere Electric Bikes.
    The Chequers gets a mention.

Have you thought about looking a bit further down, like Keresley Newlands etc? Because theres plenty of rural land around there.

A long-shot, I know .... by Jim Carroll (Member 10070224) on 7-Jun-2002
Married couple looking for a place to build their home. We can probably afford a quarter to a half acre of reasonably priced land (if no planning permission, we'll try for that).

Please tel Jim on 0794 1327614

Thanks

I signed on to this page expecting the life and energy of a people I remember.

My family and I left the UK in 1982 to come to South Africa. I do remember the Rec but there were other places we used to go as te... more >>

Ken's Chippy by laura tivers (Member 10043511) on 6-Sep-2001
Ken's chippy is the best. The actual food is not the best around, but the welcome you get whenevere you walk in there more than makes up for it!

Eeeeee...not arf. She's affectionately known at two chips, locally. And she don't like going too heavy on the batter bits either, I guess because they're free. She'd rather throw them in the bin than give 'em away.

Nice to know Ken's chippy is still in business.Remember using it most Friday and Saturday nights after coming out of the Chequers
or the Working Mens Club.As I've not been back to
Bulkington for over 12 years,is Derek Taylor
still licensee at the Chequers, does anyone know?

Thanks for the info.about The Chequers.Much appreciated.Always was my favourite pub, even when Sid Tallis was licensee prior to Derek Taylor taking over the tenancy when the Gibbs brothers bought the pub when Sid retired.

  • Re: Ken's Chippy by Roy (Member 10064968) on 19-Jul-2002
Dave, I must have used the Chequers at the same time, if you can remember "Sid". Gibb'y still goes in. Afraid many of the old "lags" are proberly drinking "upstairs".

I'd love to live there by Susanne Powell (Member 10040629) on 20-Aug-2001
Wonderful to read this site. I have been there several times visiting family from 1984 until 1997 and would gladly leave Canada to live there. I think the people who judged Bulkington have never given it a chance. Go Ken's Fish and Chips
