Are you a proud local who can talk with passion about why you love your home town? As an insider do you know the best places to go that would be of interest to vistors? Anyone who knows a bit of history about their locality (particularly if it’s a bit juicy or gruesome) would be fantastic. Any help gratefully received!

Gazing in awe, as John and Vi Ryan so skillfully
used that great big long pole to get items down from the top shelf in their shop?
not once did a packet of OMO come crashing down on that huge bacon slicer, covering it in soap powder!
and Did you ever wonder how on earth nobody got themselves run over or worse...Jumping on the back of the....PEA WAGON at the corner of Gorsey Lane- near Murphy's shop.
Some drivers were good though and used to slow down while we helped ourselves to the goodies.
once harvested, we would take them on the REC' to eat in our....STRAW HOUSES at the top of the REC'
Someone ( I can't remember who now) alway made a massive Hut House..whatever they were called.
Rooms endlessly leading off to other rooms and I think you had to be "invited" in. What's all that about!!!
Some kids used to sleep in their Huts overnight so that their Hut would'nt get trashed.
Did you ever go to Marie Hands paper shop and ask for a Greeting Card of some description and then wait...and wait... while she went looking at all those little numbered boxes - taking forever-Then eventually bring a box over, open it like it contained the Crown Jewels, take an elastic band off a bundle of your requested Cards lay them on the counter and then tell you NOT TO TOUCH THEM!!!
presumably she had caught sight of your grubby little PEA WAGON Grass Hut-making little hands!!!
for the most of the time I left the shop without buying one the cards and just bought a Coltsfoot Stick or Barley Sugar instead!!!
Remember watching "EXPERTS" walk across that black pipe opposite THE BRIDGE INN only to have a go yourself and get stuck halfway across ( and that was sitting down straddling the damn thing)
so with sore inner thighs you could'nt even walk on the Catholic Club wall on the way back.
Remember Jumping Croddies er Croddy's ( never actually written that word down before) anyway you start at the little bridge on the REC' jumping the brook and working your way to the top of the REC' to arrive at what seemed like the Grand Canyon, Remember it? Wide dried up- you could run up and down the sides ( well if you were as good as "THE BLACK PIPE WALKERS" you could. alternatively, you nearly weed yourself cos' you could'nt get out of the damn thing and needed a hand to get out, plus now you have red dust all over your Galloshers... Galoshas Gall...
oh not again!!! on days like that walking back towards the swings you realize that Damming the brook sounds like a good idea.
Collect as much rubbish as you can and stuff it into the grille then just sit and watch the water level rising. The down-side to that was it also brought up the Dogfish! funny little things them never did know what they were (still dont)
not nice if they manage to get past the cardboard in your shoes- little buggers to get out they were. ... more >>

Thanks for the laugh I'd forgotten about Marie Hand's little card box, I could never figure out why you couldn't touch them as her hands were always covered in newspaper print and were dirtier then anyones!

| looking for a WW2 U.S Soldier stationed at Burtonwood Airbase 1943

Iam looking for my Grandfather whom I have never met & Iam trying to reunite him with his long lost son (my Dad). My Grandfather's name is John Harper who at the time of 1943 was called Jack Harper. He had a brief affair in 1943 with my Grandmother who was married at the time to a Roland Harper (no relation) who was overseas in the armed forces. My Grandmother was Dorothy Rose Harper, she becam e pregnant with my Dad in June of 1943. Her Husband came home from the war & divorced her. She gave birth to my Dad in February 1944. John/Jack Harper disappeared never to be seen or heard of again. My Grandmother remarried & took the name of Gardener subsequently my Dad took that surname too but most of his early childhood he was known as Peter Buckley after his Grandparents as they spent more time bringing him up in the Garston area of Liverpool, 109 Chesterton Street. I think that John/Jack Harper is now in America or Australia somewhere. If anyone is familiar with any of this information, could you please contact me many thanks. ... more >>
