Ancestral Home in Camberwell by Johan Venter (Member 10266037) on 5-Oct-2011
I am doing some research on my family history. My 2nd great-grandfather was born in Camberwell. His parents were Thomas Charles Dorey and Eliza Trichet.
Their address in 1851 was 6, Grove Place, St Giles, Camberwell. In 1881 their address was 45, The Grove, Camberwell.
I read somewhere that "...Camberwell Grove has not changed much since the 19th century...". But that was written in the 1970's, ... more >>

Hullo. I was at Brunswick Park School, but missed you because I left in 1953. When I did a teacher-training year, I did a brief practice there. I think that it was in 1965. So I missed you again! Sorry.
I was brought up in Mosedale St. I remember the name Rust Square, but cannot remember where it was. Also I remember the name Mr Ward, but was not in his class.

    Hi Sonya Menditta
I left Brunswick Park in 1954 when I was 11. So you are probably about 4 years younger than me. If not then I remember a Sonya in my class, I just wonder if it was you? --- I am 69 now.

Pearly King and Queen of Lambeth by colleenwilson (Member 10141485) on 20-Jan-2011
Does anyone remember the Pearly Queen of Lambeth who lived at Camberwell Green in the 1950's. Her name was Lil and her costume said she was the original Pearly Queen as the title was disputed. She was a warden in the Civil Defence which is where I met her.Quite a character. The civil defence was good fun learning how to use a stirrup pump and how to protect yourself against the atomic bomb which wa... more >>

Hi! I am researching my family history and would welcome help. Main names are Finney, Gould and Wells. As a child i lived at 153, Camberwell Road - love to know any history of the house too. A question a while ago was about floris shop near Kembers - it was finney owned - my great aunt and her children - Hettie and Maudie.
Anyway - be good to hear from someone. Thank you

Hi. The reason I mentioned finneys, I grew up in Camberwell in the 1950,s and I was led to believe that my cousins wife Jean Locke was somehow related to them.,I have no proof however just hearsay.

What is the situation with the Wells family ? My GreatGrandfather was Alfred Wells. Could you please email me on royjan_99@yahoo.com. Thanks

  • Re: Finneys and goulds and wells by jane (Member 10255140) on 3-Dec-2010
Hi, I worked in Finneys as a saturday girl in 1970. My family knew the owners and my nan got me the job. I worked for a husband and wife and they had a son about my age.

  • Re: Finneys and goulds and wells by Bill Peabody (Member 10255878) on 25-Dec-2010
I worked on my Father's stall at Camberwell Green between 1945 and 1955. The Finneys had a flower stall next to ours on Saturdays only. At the time they had two shops- one next to the Foresters Arms pub at Camberwell Green and another on the corner of Kempton/ Harvey Roads- off Camberwell Green. The old lady Finney used to run the Saturday stall- always remembered for her cry of various flowers names.

  • Re: Finneys and goulds and wells by Jackie parker (Member 10253898) on 9-Jan-2011
Thanks to everyone who answered this plea. I'll check my WELLS for Albert for Jan. Bill - she was lovely, my Nan's sister - the whole 13 siblings were noisy and fun, so I can imagine Jess shouting out the names of the Flowers!!
Hettie is still going strong but the only one now.
    Thanks again

Thomas Street by raymond west (Member 10247057) on 4-May-2010
Was Thomas Street and Beckett Street the same, just renamed? I cannot find a map which shows both streets (which ran parallel with Wyndham Road)at the same time. Can anybody help please.
  • Re: Thomas Street by Arthur Stafford (Member 10249762) on 17-Jul-2010
Yes, Thomas Street is the same street as Beckett. I have a few maps of the area. In 1858 it was Collingwood St., then later it was changed to Thomas St. and then to Beckett St. On the 1913 Ordnance map it appears as Bowyer St. and I believe still has that name. The street runs parallel with Wyndham Rd. and is just off Crown St. If you need any more info please let me know.

  • Re: Thomas Street by bill (Member 10251294) on 28-Aug-2010
Thomas Street was renamed Beckett Street 26 November 1869 then Bowyer Street 30 April 1907.

Thankyou Arthur and Bill. I have only just got round to reading your posts.
Arthur, you say you have some old maps of the area. What period of time do they cover, and how can I get a copy?
    Kind regards,

Sorry for the long delay in answering.
Alan Godfrey Maps produce copies of old Ordnance Survey Maps of London Boroughs. There are a few that cover Camberwell and Walworth area from 1872 - 1914. They are at: www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk
