The Goodair family by julie goodair (Member 10241072) on 28-Sep-2009
My parents are Trevor and Wanda Goodair. We used to live at 14 Beechwood Cottages, Heronsgate Lane. We left in 1969 and have been living in Australia ever since. I used to go to Stag Lane primary school, mum used to clean the Stag pub and Dad used to drink in it! I can remember there were some woods nearby where my friends and I would pick bluebells, daffodills ect then sell them to the people in ... more >>

    Hi Julie,

My name is Ian Mills and I have been on this site for several years. I may be a bit older than you, I went to the same primary school as you did, except we called it the Swillet back then. I was born in 1947 and lived in Chorleywood all my schooldays until I went to University. I think those woods you talk about were just called Heronsgate woods, but I won't swear to it. My Mum used t... more >>

Chorleywood 1940s by Mike Durbin (Member 10160512) on 2-Mar-2008
Hi, I lived in Chorleywood from 1943 until 1969 and have been trying to find old photos to send to friends I grew up with who are now in America and Australia. The Main Parade area before the new shops and Grenville Court were built would be of great interest. Does anyone know if there is a local historical society I could contact re this ? Many thanks and kind regards to all Chorleywooders, Mike Durbin

Field next to St. Anthony Stag Lane by Sue Littlejohn (Member 10201901) on 30-Jan-2007
Does anyone know who owns the land which runs along the bottom of the gardens, including St. Anthonys, Stag Lane? When the house was built, by my grandfather, and named for my father, Anthony, in the early 1930's, this field formed part of the large grounds. The Swillet by George Davis (Member 10176726) on 29-Dec-2006
I lived in Chorleywood from 1964 to 1965, a six year old American who went to St. Peter's Primary. My mother would take me to a Canadian barber who'd buzz me good: as the sixties progressed and hair got longer, mine got shorter. It seemed this guy's shop was in a small row, including a butcher's, which was called The Swillet. Does anyone know if The Swillet still exists, and why it is so named? Thank you.

Thank you for your response Ian. My two older brothers don't remember The Swillet at all, which made me think that it was some Brigadoon-like village that I had imagined! I live in San Francisco now, and haven't been back to Rickmansworth or Chorleywood since 1970. Best regards.

Thank you Gregory for the information. As you define it, swillet is much more pleasant than the image it has always conjured up for me: a container of swill.
I never saw the actual swillet. It's great that it still exists in one form. Thanks again.

I lived in a Chartist cottage next door to the Land of Liberty (which was the 'only' pub in the Swillett; the Stag was much less popular) for three years while I was at Newland Park College. It jutted out into the road and had a large, rock in front of it to protect it from passing vehicles. There was a 'manor house' behind. Both the cottage and the pub were still there in 2004 but I didn't notice... more >>

I lived in Alabama House from August 1964 to August 1965. My dad rented it; it came with a gardener, Jock, who once served The Queen, and a black rabbitt named Charlie. We were Americans from New York, and it was quite unusual for northern Yankees to live in a southern mansion in England.

    Hi George,

I took that trip down memory lane last October and it was wonderful. I parked at the cemetary and walked down the path and through the woods to the river Chess. Hello Tom:
You lived at Alabama House some three years before I did. I was only five, so my memories are limited. I realized only recently that it was only from the back, with its pillars, that the house looked like a Southern Mansion. Hi George & all, Tennesee was built in 1961 or '62. It was being built while I lived there. One day our beagle, Cindy, went over there and ate one of the workman's lunch. Cindy also was (in)famous for eating the neighbor's 16th birthday cake (again my mom came to the rescue on short notice and baked her another cake), and for chasing the chick... more >>

    Hello Tom:
I think by 1964 there was a gas furnace; I don't remember coal at all. Our gardener Jock was from Scotland. My dad had to tell us that Jock was one adult that we kids could call by his first name (maybe my dad didn't know his last name!) The black rabbit, which also came with the house, was named Charlie.
