I am stunned to find information about the Rising Sun, never mind that even in its old form it existed until a few weeks ago. Wonders will never cease. Can anyone please tell me 1) where I could get a photograph of it prior to the rebuilding? My research leads me to believe that John Coles was my ggg grandfather, born 1822, married 1845 to Maria Kinshot. Please contact me if you wish to discuss further. Best regards, Richard

The Rising Sun article in The Village News has now been posted. It shows a picture of the original Rising Sun (not thatched) and stories related by villagers, of their memories of the pub over the years. Some previous landlords are also mentioned. Look for the people in history link and then Rising Sun.

Rising Sun by Betty Cheesman (Member 10076254) on 22-Aug-2002
In the 1881 census, John Webb, my g-g-grandfather was a farmer, his address was listed as the Rising Sun, Clanfield. There were about another 80 people living at this address. Could someone please tell me if this was the name of a farm or a small area in those days? Although one of them was listed as the publican. Any information about Old Clanfield would be much appreciated.
  • Re: Rising Sun by Elinor Quinn (Member 10068445) on 8-May-2003
The Rising Sun was a thatched pub. It was burnt down and rebuilt in a day - Portakabin style. It still exists, in the old part of Clanfield. They added a pitched roof a few years ago - very little difference, I am afraid.
