I'm looking for info on the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the Manchester Regiment that I believe had a barracks in Holton-le-Clay in 1917. My grandfather was in the 2nd Battalion and fought in the Battle of the Somme that started on 1st July 1916. Two weeks later he was 'posted to the Depot' and 2 months later 'posted to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion. I've assumed that he was injured and sent bac k to England to recover. He met my grandmother in Cleethorpes and according to the family used to walk back to Holton-le-Clay after seeing her home to Lovett Street. Anyone know why CLEETHORPE ROAD is not called CLEETHORPES ROAD? I was thinking maybe its cos when it was named it was only leading to one Clee village (presuming thorpe was meaning village) and the plural came along later? Please enlighten me for my daughter's homework - its been half my life since I was in school! T. Reply
