| tracing Roger
|
by Annette (Member 10189839) on 24-Jul-2006

Does anyone happen to know a man called Roger from Clitheroe (late 30s, early 40s) who now lives in Belfast?
I went out on a pub crawl in Belfast last Friday, and ended up chitchatting away the night with a group of men out on a stag's night. And one of them, Roger, was well & truly wonderful... as it happens... Sadly, his mates dragged him away suddenly, moving on to another pub, while my friend dragged me away, so within a few careless (and cowardly) seconds, we had lost sight of each other in the bustle of the night, with no names or numbers exchanged. As it happens.
The few clues I have are pitiful... One of them is his home town, Clitheroe. Either his mum or dad is one of TWELVE brothers and sisters, and one of his uncles (almost the same age as himself) lives in Belfast too. Roger's sister used to work for the administration at Lancaster University, but nowadays for Sheffield University. Little to go on, I know, but I thought it was worth a try.
Does anyone know who this Clitheroe family may be?
Thanks,
Annette

I am trying to find the whereabouts of any relations of my grandfather Joseph Harold Beck.I believe the Beck family lived in Clitheroe and also in Kendal. Joseph was born in 1885 so he would be long dead but I was in hope that some of the family would still be living there. Joseph was already married when he and my grandmother had an affair hence my dad ( born in 1921.) My father came to Australia when he was 9 years old. If any one has any information about the Beck family could they please email me.

| Map of Old Clitheroe

You may be interested in seeing an old map of Clitheroe c.1890 which can be found here...
http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environment/oldmap/towns/clith/clith.htm
I think the grammar school shown in York Street is what I remember as the separate building housing the music room and gymnasium. It must have been, since the grammar school was founded in 1554. I also think that Well House was demolished and the land later used for what is now the 6th form college because on another website I saw a photograph of them laying the foundation stone for the grammar school with St Mary's Church in the background.

Does anyone know the website address for the "Clitheroe Advertiser and Times", do they have one?
I have found the address for the Evening Telegraph but they do not post much news for Clitheroe on their site.
I am now living abroad and although I am still in contact with friends it is nice to go online and read the news myself.

Think so. You lived in Waddington - bungalow with Art Deco stained glass in a Clarice Cliffe style?
Kept a brick in your desk at CRGS to sharpen pencils on (so you said)?
After 25 years away I moved back to Clitheroe about 5 years ago and nothing has changed. Its still 1970 here.
Where you living?

Heehee I'd forgotten The Brick. Insanity doesn't run in my family. It gallops.
I now live in Bramley, Leeds and I'm on the staff at Leeds College of Technology. My father still lives in the stained glass bungalow and I visit regularly.
I gather you are involved with the Clitheroe 'Great Days' Festival from June 7th to 9th (isn't the Internet wonderful?) so hopefully I will have the opportunity to meet you again then if not before.
You can track my sordid past on Friends Reunited (www.friendsreunited.co.uk) if you wish. ... more >>

Ernest Clitheroe was my great grandfather! When he visited South Africa with his travelling pupper show, he was with his wife and two children, Victor and Norah and Beatrice. He put Victor and Norah in an orphanage, and continued on to Asia. Norah was my grandmother. She never knew she had a family until the 2nd world war, when a man called Austin Anderson visited her and said he was her sister, Beatrice's husband. Apparently Ernests first wife died and he remarried in Australia, he visited Cape Town again, but never contacted his two children. Since then my aunt Norah Mann visited Australia and traced the Australian side of the family and I'm wondering if you are part of that family?

I have found out more. The Earl you are interested in was named William, and his son's birth certificate lists him also as an actor! He married Bessie Tyson. His son, Ernest, the puppeteer, who was my great grandfather, had Colebank as his second name.
- Re: Earl of Clitheroe - William Clitherow
by Ray Clitheroe (Member 10232251) on 28-Sep-2008
Well, Nicola Reilly, after nearly 6 years, I hope you are still out there. I just do not know how I have missed your posting until now!
They say all things come to those who wait. . . but "The Earl of Clitheroe", nonetheless!
Well I am the great grandson of one William CLITHEROW - yes, there was a spelling name change somewhere between 1911 & 1914 - born 25 October, 1838, son of William (occup. "Dyer") & Jane Bartlett Kerry who were married 23 Aug 1835. Witnesses were James Kerry and Mary Clitherow (by her mark).
William Clitherow (Jnr), then a 25yo tobacconist, married 20yo Elizabeth Ann Colebank, daughter of James Colebank, Tailor. Later information notes that the both become Actors. They have 4 children, Ernest William Colebank Clitherow, Flora Bessie C Clitherow, Lilian Jane Clitherow and Maud A M Clitherow who all at one time or another become actor/actresses, but notably, Ernest becomes the Press Agent for Fillis's Circus tour of New Zealand in 1893 and business manager of Stanley's Opera Company in Australia in 1895. I have not yet come across evidence of him being a "Puppeteer".
William (Jnr) meets Rosina Adams, London born Actress, c.1881 and has 4 children, Minnie, who is deceased before 1888, Graham William Clitherow b.1883 Grahamstown Sth Africa, Cecil Alfred Leonard Clitherow (my grandfather b.1886 Durbin Sth Africa) and Enid Grace Clitherow (later Hook) b.1888, Collingwood, Melbourne, Australia...none of whom become actors!
William states in 1888, he and Rosina were married in London in 1881, but no such record exists and he uses the stage name W F Clitherow.
As near as I can make out the whole Family end up back in London (Surrey) by 1901 when William is an "Elecution teacher".
There is no known Earldom of Clitheroe, however Lord Clitheroe, who is a Baronet and politician was a directors of Yorkshire Bank PLC but does not bear the name Clitheroe/Clitherow.
I am happy to show you all evidence I have found to date and would excitedly look forward to seeing what evidence / documentation you and Margaret McIvor and her aunt Norah Mann have in your posession.
