Cringing Cult of Celebrity
- What about Sir William and Lady Hartley, of Hartley's jam fame, who bequeathed the Hartley Homes and Hospital to the town? The Cristiana Hartley Maternity Home down Barrowford Road was named after their daughter.I believe the jam business grew from Sir William's mum selling home made pickles from her home in Windy Bank, possibly. And Harrison Birtwhistle, who emigrated to Canada but remembered his native town, giving it the Birtwhistle Trust houses, and (presumably) Birtwhistle Avenue? And John Cunliffe, originator of Postman Pat? And Mrs Kippax, of biscuit fame - yes, there really was a Mrs Kippax. And John Law, the pedlar who died in a Colne inn after being cursed by one of the Lancashire witches?
