Are you a proud local who can talk with passion about why you love your home town? As an insider do you know the best places to go that would be of interest to vistors? Anyone who knows a bit of history about their locality (particularly if it’s a bit juicy or gruesome) would be fantastic. Any help gratefully received!

No. I'm 67 and never liked it as a child. I less like it now. The council must be one of the worst in the country. Although the are very good at horti and aboriculture, and I applaud them for that.
Tell Glenis that I love her.

| Rolling Stones in Crewe?

by Geoff Collier (Member 10157782) on 11-Nov-2005

I just noticed a website that listed the "Town Tall" in Crewe as one of the venues played by the Stones in 1963. Normally I'd just see it as a misprint but there was no town hall that I was aware of. Does anyone know if there was a Town Tall?
- Re: Rolling Stones in Crewe?
by Christine Cooper (Member 10008952) on 17-Nov-2005
The Town Hall in Crewe which was also a dance hall. Stood in the spot on the corner of Earl St and Prince Albert St where the mindeless councillors now want to move the war memorial to.

by Geoff Collier (Member 10157782) on 25-Nov-2005
Thanks. I remember visiting the library on that spot so i guess it was the same building. Then I remember seeing it demolished in about 1970 from the new library area.
Was the town hall used for a lot of gigs?

The Rolling Stones played Crewe Town Hall on the 10th November 1963 - Bill Wyman (former Stone) wrote to me on the 21st May 1991 and recalled: "We left Newcastle in the afternoon by van and drove to Crewe and played a show at the Sunday Star Club at the Town Hall (which was demolished in 1967) between 7.30pm and 11pm. Tickets were 5/6d. We arrived pretty late. I blew my bass amp again and also broke a string. We never had spare amps or guitars then so I played the rest of the set with 3 strings. We had a terrible show and bad audience. Our support bands on this show were: Frankenstein & The Monsters (who went on stage with chains) and the Crestas.
We left there and drove to Hanley and spent the night at a local hotel".
Hope that prompts a few memories! ... more >>

The Stones played at the Majestic Ballroom in High Street (which is now Apollo Cinema, as did Gene Vincent, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers et al, Except the Beatles.

Hi Tony
Sorry but I have to diasgree with you re the Stones at the Majestic.
There is no record of this in Bill Wyman's mighty tome, 'Rolling with thw Stones'. As you may know, Wyman was the Stones' 'historian/diarist' and, as such, he kept meticulous records.
Indeed, I have 2 letters from 'Old Stoneface' himself where he recalls the night the guys played Crewe - I'll submit these details at a later date.
Keep on Rockin' Tony!
However, the Stones did play Hanley. ... more >>

I have no recollection of the Stones playing at the Majestic. The Beatles played there twice on consecutive Mondays in August '62, the first time with Pete Best & the second with Ringo.
The Stones definitely played at the Town Hall in November '63, which I'm sure was their only appearance in Crewe. They were supported that night by a local group called Dene Wayne and the Exiles which I joined as the bass player in February '64. We played at the Majestic & the Town Hall many times. ... more >>

by Phil (Member 10204103) on 8-Mar-2007
Hello Pete, I saw Dene Wayne & The Exiles many times in Crewe between 1964 through to about 1971. I remember they changed their name to The Magic Moments around 1966 then reverted back to the original name. I always thought that they were really good considering it was just guitar, bass and drums with a vocalist. You bought Chris Dunne's (Ex Krinks) Fender bass didn't you? In 1964, I was a 14 year old drummer in Crewe with Vanda & The Vandals. I went on to play bass with The Inmates and Adge's Convention. Then lead guitar with Natural Heritage, Four For All and Saffron. I also was resident drummer at Sydney Club then Coppenhall Club. Then in 1974, Tarquin was formed, the line-up being me on bass, Keith Barber on rhythm guitar, Nigel Jones on drums and two of your former Exiles colleagues Martin Jones on lead vocals and Ken Lockwood on lead guitar. We lasted four years. After that, I played bass with The Chetwoods, then I went back on back on lead guitar with Uncle Sam, Caravan and The Merchant Bankers later to become The Merchants. I also did two years as resident bass player at Middlewich British Legion with The Al Charles Trio in 1980/81. The last I heard of you Pete you were living in Ausralia. Anyway, wherever you are I hope you're ok.
Regards,
Phil Dodd ... more >>

Hi Phil, have only now returned to this site & found your message! I remember you and Vanda & the Vandals. Yes I'm living in Melbourne now, came out here in '83. The name of the band was changed in '64 when we were signed up to The Roy Tempest Organisation, he of the (un)Original Drifters notoriety. He chose the name, we all hated it and we had our legs pulled over it nearly everywhere we played. We split up in mid '65 then reformed later that year and reverted to the original name. The highlight for me of those years was the 2 months we spent in Germany in '64, the first month in Hamburg in the same street as the Indra, Star & Kaiserkeller Clubs, all places that The Beatles performed at in their early days. I sold Chris's Fender in the mid '70s and kick myself to this day for doing so :( ... more >>

Roy Tempest is currently writing a book about his time in showbiz which is also being made into a movie with Spielberg being interested in directing it.
I am a researcher involved with the project and wondered if you were able to contribute in any way towards the book and movie?
If so, please email me

Not only Steven Spielberg has offered to make a movie out of Roy Tempest’s anthology of delightful short well written stories but I have reliable information that the BBC is in the midst of a bidding war with channel 4 over serial rights.
Roy Tempest is a promoter, He was the manger for the following – Elvis, The Drifters, Grateful Dead, Led Zepplin,U2, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash the Carpenters to name a few.
A flamboyant man of many talents his book will prove that his forte instead of music promotion where he was a giant in the industry has always been writing.
His autobiography, now widely being acknowledged, by those who have read the manuscript, is of great artistic and literary merit and has drawn comparisons with the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, George Anthony Bull, and St Augustine.
Random House has purportedly made an offer of $400 for paperback rights. While Rupert Murdoch of Fox studios is keen that James Cameron director of Avatar make a film.
Meanwhile Roy Tempest is rumoured to be in the Maldives finishing off the final Chapters. His secretary was not giving anything away and could not confirm or deny that the book will be ready by December 2010 where it is widely expected to be nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature.

I mean the Roy Tempest of Bethnal Green who managed the Carpenters and who owns the kentucku Fried chiken outlets in Arizona and Texas. He has written a superb book according to those who read the manuscript. His tree daughters are doing the publicity and marketing

You mean the Roy Tempest who brought Elvis to the Albert Hall. lived nest door to him in Wallance road off Brick Lane. Old Jewish family from Russia came to the East end in 1902 Roy was born in 1937 - He first became agent for Jhonny Cash in the 1960s but few knew that he himself was part of a band called the Moody Bloomies.

I remember the Elvis concert well - Roy went to Germany and organised Elvis when the singer was on a three day leave from the Army. I would love to read the book and the background to this. I think Roy wrote the lyrics of Mosse Den. I first saw Roy when he was debating in the Oxford Union - The motion was - Does Post Colonial Britan deserve a perment seat in the Security Council. A brilliant speaker mesmerised the audience. ... more >>

I lived at 11 Ash Road from 1954 to 1956 and went to Beech St school. Used to go to the Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon and the local methodist church on Sundays. Hated Sundays. All my pals out playing and my sister and I had to stay indoors. The hypocrisy of it all. My farther tried to set up a hair dressing business and thought that if he looked religious and attended church he would get lots of business. Only problem was he was a lazy bstrd and only went to the shop if he felt like it, which of course meant that the customers didn't bother to go to his shop. I think my mum went to church as that meant she was less likely to get beaten up by my father on Sundays. Always very careful not to punch my mother in the face was my father, a real gentleman.
Beech Street was a great escape from home. Miss Naylor in particular remains in my memories- always made life happy. Thanks Miss Naylor. ... more >>
