Some of you may be interested to know I run a local Crosby website and a community and local history group on Facebook. I've read numerous postings on here were some of you are wanting various information on Crosby and requesting help with tracking down old friends etc. My membership at present stands to over 1630 members. Lots of them have been able to track down old friends etc. May be worth j oining, you never know what or who you come across.Also anyone interested in Crosby history and local issues may find it interesting. Just found this site and was made up to hear so many names and places that where my playground. I am Jamie McIver,eldest son of Jim the greengrocer,our shop was on Oxford Road opposite St Edmunds school.I have 5 sisters,Maureen,Angela,Jill,Barney(real name Christine) and Katy.also 3 brothers,John,Peter and David(sadly dead now from cancer). We all went to St Edmunds and with exception of Maure en all went to St Bede's. We all grew up in 24 Picton Road and played on the beach and in the gardens every day,there are people I speak to today who don't believe we had a beach,let alone the brilliant Victorian gardens which by the way are getting back to how they used to be. like others we bunked over the railings at the key park and that was amazing,don't bunk now as our mum and dad have a memorial bench in there and we go and sit and remember them and our time in the park illegally!!! Chippy in St John's road was Lloyds chippy and Ronnie was there son. The McIvers,Farringtons and the Gerrards where my friends and still are today despite the fact I've been away since 1979. I spent a term at a convent in Freshfield in 1946 when my mother was ill. I remember walking in pinewoods. Does anyone remember it? I think it's gone now and would like to see old photos of it. The convent -St Joseph's- was, I think, a convalescent home.My sister and I were accommodated there in 1946 when our mother was in hospital.I recollect that there were a lot of orphan children there in transit to Canada-these I suppose were victims of the war in Europe. I have a vivid recollection of one boy, about my age 7, collecting tea leaves from the other childr ens cups, and eating them. I do know a lot of the children couldn't speak English. Funny as anything. All sorts of randoms on it It's basically a landline telephone number you can ring. 0870 755 0872. Where you get put into a waiting facility, it then connects you to another caller, you say hello, and they can choose whether to talk to you, or put you back in the queue because they don't like the sound of you or whatever hahaha. This building should have been listed. However, the local Council of the day gave permission to have it pulled down, shame on them. My ggrandfather Peter Leonard ran a construction business from there. Have no memory of it being turned into a Potter's House. Also have a photo of it if you are interested.
