As a Metal Detectorist living in Denholme, I would be interested in any information that anyone has regarding the local history of the village prior to say the 1700's.

Peter
You might be interested in a note in Halifax Antiquarian Society Papers 1916, page 189, which refers to a man who, around 1870, found a buried bag of Roman coins 'in a field called Carperley' but then dropped and lost some of them.

the history of denholme is an interesting subject there has been habitation in this area since the iron age ie some of the fields near to whally lane where mined in this period for iron oar you can still see evidence of this would be greatfull if any more information perhaps denholme should form its own historic socity

I have just been reading various comments from the other participents of this forum and I'd like to correct one or two point. Firstly, during the iron age there were no known settelers in Denholme, Denholme itself is on the roman road route between Manchester and Ilkley, this means that the VERY first possible settelers might have been the Romans (but it is doubtful). In the thirteenth centuary Thomas De Thornton granted land in Denholme to monks in North Yorkshire who hirded sheep here. The fifteenth centuary saw Denholme turned into a deer ranch by the Tempest family! The land passed into the hands of the Saville family who broke it up and sold it off! The majority of which passed to the locally renowned Foster family in the ninteenth centuary who after attempting to industrialise the village after several unsuccessful attempts to build a mill (which fell to bits and burnt down before completion) lived there dynasty at Tannery House on the Edge of Denholme. (Most are buried at St Pauls church on the hill top and there is one monumental epi-tomb in Denholme Gate Graveyard opposite the old chapel on Halifax Road) Leaving behind the riddle of the Fosters fortune. The final version of this mill was finally ripped down last year, once again changing Denholmes Landscape forever. With reference to the fortune, the previous incumbant of St Pauls Church (Rev. Christopher Hollis, I believe) repeatedly denied that the fortune was donated to the church, IF.... this is true then we can only assume that the entire amount was seized by HM Government. ... more >>
