The Deptford Poisonings by Terry Riley (Member 10239543) on 12-Sep-2010
Does anyone know anything about a murder case which became known as "The Deptford Poisonings?" The case was around 1881 and involved a mother and daughter Amelia and Elizabeth Winters, who killed their lodgers. Any info would be much appreciated.

Elizabeth Frost was married to my great grandfather. I have quite a bit of news paper cuttings and Old Bailey trial notes. Amelia Winters died (poss of her own poison)and had to be buried in secret because of the condemation of her neighbours. Elizabeth was sentanced to 7 years and pretty much disapeared afterwards. Her son died in his early teens and her husband had a large number of children wit... more >>

My mother has just located an article about Amelia Winters, I have yet to see it but it appears it wasn't only her family and boarders but she was baby farming. IE taking illegimate babys off mothers, insuring them, killing them and collecting the insurance money.

    Will keep you updated

Does anyone know what happened to elizabeth Frost nee Winters after she was released from her 7 years sentance at Holloway? she seems to have disappeared off the map. Her husband my great grandfather never remarried, just lived with a partner and had a large number of kids.

    Hi Sandy,
i have a Danny Driscoll in my family tree who was probably born about 1905, he is not a direct family member so i dont know much about him. I know he used to drink in the Adam & Eve pub in Peckham High St. and had a daughter Margaret circa 1925 who married into my family (Claude Dennington).
    Not much help i suppose?

    Terry

  • Re: driscoll family in deptford by Paul Masters (Member 10255802) on 20-Mar-2011
My grandfather owned The Adam & Eve in Peckham High Street in the 1920s and 30s and he died at the pub in 1935. Interestingly, my grandmother's family name was O'Driscoll, and they were from Limerick and Cork, but probably no relation to your family.
