| DINNINGTON AREA
|
by NETWORK RAIL SAFETY ADVISOR (Member 10141484) on 30-Dec-2004
|
DUE TO INCREASED VANDALISM IN THE THIS AREA, EXTRA PATROL'S BY THE BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE WILL BE CARRIED OUT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, AND THE POSSIBILITY OF HIDDEN CCTV EQUIPMENT WILL BE INSTALLED.
LET ME REMIND OFFENDERS THAT TRESPASSING ON THE RAILWAY FOR WHATEVER REASON, APART FROM AN EMERGENCY, IS AN OFFENCE AND THE PENALTY CARRIES A £2000 FINE, NOT TO MENTION THE VERY HIGH RISK OF DEATH, OR SERIOUS INJURY.
EVEN IN AN EMERGENCY, THE EMERGENCY SERVICES MUST BE CALLED AND THE SIGNALLER MUST BE INFORMED BY THE NEAREST RAILWAY PHONE (ON A SIGNAL POST OR AT A LEVEL CROSSING-THE PHONE WILL AUTOMATICALLY DIAL WHEN THE RECEIVER IS LIFTED OR A SINGLE BLACK BUTTON IS PRESSED AND RELEASED-ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS INSIDE THE COVER).
ALL CALLS ARE DIGITALLY RECORDED AND KEPT ON FILE.
MIS-USE OF THESE PHONES IS TREATED VERY SERIOUSLY AND OFFENDERS CAN BE PROSECUTED.
EACH YEAR AROUND 800 PEOPLE ARE KILLED OR SERIOUSLY MAIMED (LOSS OF LEGS OR ARMS) BY TRESPASSING ON THE TRACK, PLACING OBJECTS ON THE TRACK, TAMPERING WITH SAFETY CRITICAL EQUIPMENT, PLACING OBJECTS ON THE TRACK OR ELECTROCUTION BY OVERHEAD LINE EQUIPMENT WHICH CARRY 25,000 VOLTS LIVE AND CAN KILL INSTANTLY.
THE SPEED AND QUIETNESS OF TRAINS CAN BE VERY SURPRISING, ALSO THE STOPPING DISTANCE IS UNDERESTIMATED, AS A TRAIN DOING A SPEED OF 125 MPH CAN TAKE 1.4 MILES TO STOP.
RAILWAY ENGINEERS ARE HIGHLY TRAINED, AND ARE WELL AWARE OF THE DANGERS, THEY DON'T TAKE RISKS, BUT EVEN THESE EXPERIENCED WORKERS ARE UNFORTUNATELY KILLED EVERY YEAR, BECAUSE THE RAILWAY IS SUCH A DANGEROUS PLACE.
SO BE WARNED! WE DON'T WANT TO PROSECUTE, BUT WE WILL, WE WOULD RATHER PROSECUTE THAN HAVE THE GRIM TASK OF RECOVERING BODIES AND INFORMING YOUR PARENTS OR NEXT OF KIN.
SO BE SAFE, KEEP AWAY FROM THE LINE! ... more >>

| New to the area

Hi, I am moving into the area (Throapham) from Staffordshire and was wondering if there are any gyms in the area, a tip for rubbish, supermarkets (found Safeway already, but heard that it is one of the ones that is closing down), B&Q etc. Any information would be useful, kind regards, Louise
- Re: New to the area
by poppy (Member 10081507) on 12-Jul-2004
Hi Louise,
There is a gym not far from Throapham. It's on the site of the Jet petrol station (out towards Thurcroft). I don't know if it is up to much but it's there. The Council tip is down by the North Anston Trading Estate (if you were to travel towards Todwick crossroads this is on the left after the traffic lights on the bridge).
If no-one takes on the Safeway then there is the Co-op just up from it. Failing that Tesco at Worksop isn't too far away and you could always try the Asda at Handsworth...you'll need a couple of hours for browsing around that! Dinnington High Street has a good butchers and a couple of grocers.
B & Q is a trip into Rotherham or Worksop but you can also find Wickes and Dunelm Mills at Canklow.
Crystal Peaks isn't too far away and has a Sainsbury's, Boots, Superdrug and a selection of clothes shops. The Supertram runs by it so if you fancy a trip into Sheffield without the car you could catch it there. It also has a retail park. You'll find Focus, Curry's and Comet on there, there's a large Gym there too (but I have forgotten the name of it) and you can pop in for a KFC after. Just across from there is Damon's (rapture) who do ribs, wings and onion loaf and are definitely worth a try if you like that kind of thing.
Sorry if I've overdosed you here, I got a bit carried away.
I hope you enjoy your new home. Good luck and welcome to South Yorkshire!
PS. If you need any more info, feel free to ask. ... more >>
