Cringing Cult of Celebrity
  • Oh, me. Not very famous really, but don't mind ppl knowing I was brung up in Donny (Edlo actually, cringe-attack).
  • Oscar Wilde once passed through Doncaster. On a train. He didn't actually get off at Doncaster, but there is anecdotal evidence to suggest he may have glanced out of the window when the train pulled into Doncaster train station. He may have even asked if he could visit Doncaster on the way back. He may even have been thinking about living in the cultural hotbed that is Doncaster. COME TO DONCASTER- OSCAR WILDE COUNTRY!
  • DONCASTER 1970 BOXER TERRY SHENTON ORWIN FOUGHT UNDER THE ORWIN NAME WENT INTO THE BARE KNUCKLE FIGHT GAME WON 10 OF HIS FIGHTS WATCHED 7 OF THEM AND THIS MAN HAD A MEAN LEFT HOOK I SPENT A BIT OF TIME WITH HIM IN LATE 1979 LONDON A TRUE DONCASTER CULT BOXER

And what about the blonde girl in Casualty...? Kelly something...? Wasn't she "famous"...? Celebrities not only have the brains, but also the money to get out of this dump, so it makes sense...

  • Rumour has it that Danny Blanchflower lived in Edlow, not sure if it's true though?
  • Famous People - well, almost. Word has it that a new 'mega mixing DJ', as far as DMC (specialist DJ label) goes, lives in Donny. Rick Wain had a cool mix of DJ Jean's 'The Launch' with Rozalla's 'Everybodys free' out in June 2000 and it was featured heavily on Galaxy by Alec Pepper as a bootleg from the first mix long before that. We found Rick cowering in the corner of Electro Music one day because the fame and fortune was just too much for him. If you think this is made up then check at Electro, they were selling the CD of his mix 'cos that's where I bought a copy.

Daniel Defoe visited the town in 1743 when compiling his book, "Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain." (1744). He writes in glowing terms about the town's many taverns. Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria lodged at the Angel on Frenchgate -- demolished in the 1960s for the Frenchgate Centre. Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823), inventor of the power loom, built textile manufactories in Hall Gate (1787), Fishergate (1788) and Factory Lane (1790), but he was driven out by the town's upper class residents who hated the noise and smoke.
