The best way to find me is via the www dateagranny dot com web site - I would rather you find me there than email me directly - I hope you understand. Sylvia x

    Hello Cleone

I have members of the Hipwell family in North Kilworth, near Dunton Bassett, in the 1700's. Sarah Hipwell married Thomas Berridge at North Kilworth on 12 December 1740. Their eldest son William Berridge moved to Dunton Bassett in about 1770, and the Berridge family were still living there at the time of the 1901 Census.
It is quite possible that there is a connection as Sarah ha... more >>

    Hi there

I was born in Dunton Bassett in 1950, I remember Mrs Hipwell, she lived with Doris Hogg and an old gentleman called Fred, his surname escapes me, he was very bent over, they lived on the end of Chapel Yard on Main Street. I delivered newspapers to them, as far as I remember those cottages never had electricity, they always sat round a table with an oil lamp in the centre.I can still pi... more >>

What happened to the Manor? by rose (Member 10064560) on 4-Apr-2002
I visited the Manor a few years ago, and a memorable visit it was! I'm curious what happened to it? Was it re-occupied after the group who lived there moved out? I think they left around 4 years ago.

Want to send me a reply: alicia.rose@u.genie.co.uk

The 'Children of God' finally decided to give up living there about 3 years ago. (I suspect the rent too high for a relatively small community - only about 8 of them left towards the end!).

The owners (The Aickman Estate) then decided to put the property onto the market. (Having spearated off the 16th c. barn + some of the land between the Manor and Main Street, and sold it separately for re-d... more >>

The cult left the manor a few years ago now, I think it pretty much disbanded, and they also attempted to renew the lease on the building but certain village powers pushed the aikman estate to prevent this. (interestingly, one of the girls from the cult turned up on a channel 4 documentary last year called `around the world in 80 raves').

The Aikman estate seem to have attempted to make as muc... more >>

I am searching for my half brother who would be approx. 56 - 57 yrs old now. During WWll, 1943 - 44, my father, Robert " Gordon" Cole , was stationed at Aldershot as a gunnary instructor with the Canadian Armored Corps. While there he would go into London on his leaves and whether it was there or in Aldershot, he met a love, her name was possibly Emma, although we are not positive on this name. W... more >>

speed bumps by Paul Hurford (Member 10012971) on 5-Feb-2001
Some people want speed bumps on Main Street. Why? I'd rather Peter Mandelson bought out the Post Office. Speed bumps are harmful to both cars and people. Especially when people don't know they're there. This is Dunton, not Coventry.
  • Re: speed bumps by katkins (Member 10030974) on 18-Apr-2001
ok so you are not in favour of the use of speed bumps BUT some of us live on the opposite side of the road and live in mortal danger of getting squashed to death if we even put a toe over the curb. How are we supposed to get to the post office to collect our pensions? One day Paul this could be you

  • Re: speed bumps by Paul Hurford (Member 10012971) on 30-Nov-2001
Hmm. I think we have a lose lose situation, because it is arguable that, to get to the Post Office, the pedestrian should stop look and listen before attempting to cross, but then the inconvenience of the installation of speed bumps would be worth it to have a potentially safer village.
But before this "i'll sue you" culture advocated traffic 'calming' measures, how many people got run over on Ma... more >>

Last legs? In fact it's gone!
New owners moved in about early April 2002, and as far as I know have no intention of keping it going as a pub .......
