The Best Things in Durham, Durham*

If you're around, be sure to check these things out

You can tell us more about Durham.

The Best Things
  • The Durham Miners' Gala every July. Despite what Thatcher and the Tories did to the North East, the people who come into the city from the former pit villages and march behind the banners that day show us that their spirit remains unbroken. The atmosphere is fantastic and the people are great. Everyone has a great time.
  • Four store! Dont have to shop in Newcastle anymore! 4 Framwell Gate Bridge, Durham
  • people are nice, everything is central.
  • The motorway out. The railway station. The bus station. The civilised world being close at hand. Only 20 mins to Newcastle and a little further to Yorkshire. The by-pass (by far the best thing). GNER (the train company) ensuring a large number of services don't stop at the city when they go between Newcastle and Darlington and further south - trust me, belting past the city at full speed is the best way to see this dump.
  • Ahhhh, isn't it pretty?
  • The sense of community that comes from a small town
  • Not living there anymore, good to visit though
  • The buildings in the main peninsula are generally lovely, the people are top rate and the whole place just seems to be at peace with itself in the city centre. The castle and cathedral are like old friends with the river running past to say hello.....
  • The surroundings and the people. If you're vaguely pleasant and not a partonising twat, people are generally ok. If you are a student form the south, avoid strutting in round in university attire and loudly declaiming in that twattish rah way that you do. It embarrasses those of us from up here who just want to get on with it.
  • chilin in sleaze
  • Durham is a really nice place too live - there is a lot going on now. There are a lot of visitors in the summer, so the city centre can be a bit hectic. Students seem happy enough here now, there used to be a bit of trouble on friday/saturday night but the police have done a big 'clamp down'.
  • The birds are fit
  • The river, the relaxed atmosphere, the fact it only takes 20 min to walk the whole length of the city. In 5 min walk your by the river away from the hustle and bustle but 20 min on train and youre in newcastle - its the best of all worlds in a small space
  • Very good local bus system The people The prices Very small, easily accessible area Loads of pub, many with superb gardens. I'll take The Swan over Hyde Park on every hot summer's day.
  • long, scenic walks along the riverbanks the easy gothic girls
  • The colpitts, cheep beer £1.20 p/pt, funny locals, good atmosphere, 'nuff said. Salvo army is a fantastic shop.
  • shrburn f.c
  • The people if there is one thing about durham it hold some of the best and most funny people in the uk.
  • friday nights by the river
  • The best thing about durham is the small, cobbles streets, there is always some corner that you haven't investigated. Best thing is listening to live music while sitting on the monument in the middle of the market place on a summers day!
  • Durham is a lovely city - beautiful
  • Bowling alley, the fanny (ooooo yeah), braying hippies
  • The Students. Just imagine Durham without them. It would quickley turn into somewhere about as nice to be as stockton/boro/billingham/hartlepool. Give em a break!
  • Everywhere being in walking distance, and always knowing someone in Klute!
  • Pubs coz there is plenty of them, Good snooker and pool club...err not much else.
  • Pretentious students (probably about 60 % of them)
  • Not that I'm saying the police in durham are particularly lax or anything, 'cause they are a fine upstanding example of good policeness, but it is a fairly common thing to just wander around town with a rolly in hand, or along the river bank in the summer, a light breeze playing over your numb face, the smells playing games with your head as you try to differentiate between the different components. Component actually. Sewage.
  • The Prince Bishops Shopping Centre - SOOO many great shops
  • Hating students.
  • Going out drinking at Christmas time and meeting people you went to school and havnt seen for ages.
  • The 3 Sherburns! SHerburn road,Sherburn village and Sherburn Hill
  • Er...... hmmmmmm....... got me on that one!
  • riverbanks on a sunny or snowy day
  • Durham sixth form centre (i went there)
  • the way you know everyone, and everything is near everything else the angel is a quality pub....or would be if it wasnt for that bastard barman good local music scene the best band ever...the rotchers...check them out!!
  • There are some REAL "characters" in Durham who you see nearly every time you go into town. Many of them drink in the Elm Tree and The Angel. Many of the people support Sunderland here which is always a major plus point. (And it's spelt "Mackems", not "Maccums") The walk along the river bank is really nice.
  • The short proximity between clubs.Klute is only about a five minute walk from DH1 and Cafe Rock.
  • The thriving tiddlywinks scene. The availability of wool.
  • Friendly atmosphere, close-knit community and how you can walk everywhere without getting completely knackered!
  • 5 minutes from the centre to the riverbanks, where you can skin up in peace
  • palace green, castle, cathedral and a wonderful place to visit is crook hall, just along the waterside, from milbrungate roundabout, open to the public..... worth a visit.
  • horden
  • View from the railway station over the city - nice!
  • In my (humble!) opinion, you haven't lived until you've visited this beautiful City in the Autumn... shuffle through crisp leaves down by the River, or better yet take a bottle of wine, some fresh bread and cheese and make a picnic of it (but don't get too ratted and fall in becaus the water is COLD...)
  • Everywhere is close by (esp. for shopping trips)
  • The best thing about Durham is the Cathedral. Once voted the most beautiful building in the world, it is wonderful for spending time chilling out in a very ambient/religious atmosphere.
  • The indoor market each Thurs/Fri/Sat. Cheap fruit and veg, crafts, fish and cheese.
  • Sitting by the river on a Summer's day watching people trying to impress each other rowing up and down the river.
  • Walking along the riverbank.
  • The best thing about Durham is the summer, when all the students go back to whichever hellpit they spawned from.
  • The skateboarders. Being able to go off the busy and often noisy centre of town and be down by a scenic and beautiful river all alone in peace in just a few minutes walk.
  • It is a really bonny city to grow up in
