| Searching for Halson family
|
by Reg Dilloway (Member 10216240) on 26-Oct-2011

|
My family lost all connections with their relations in England after my grandfather emigrated to India in 1914. My great grand father Thomas Dilloway had a daughter Mary Daisy who married Arthur Brown 1916 in Guildford Surrey. Their daughter Evelyn May married Allan Halson and their daughter Susan Halson was born in 1949 in Ealing Greater London and married James Brennan 1968 in Surrey, their daug hter Victoria Ann Brennan married 1st ? Laird and 2nd Neil R Pocock in Winchester Hampshire 2005. If anyone has any knowledge of these people or how I may be able to contact them, I would be grateful if they would contact me. email reg_dilloway@xtra.co.nz

| Spiral Steps café in Southall in the 1960s

Does anyone recall this coffee bar/café on the High Street, opposite what was a cinema then bowling alley, just east of the junction with South Road/Lady Margaret Road. It was the only place I knew with a juke box full of jazz. A wonderful place to spend a lunch break from Southall Tech.

Shaila, is this you? The Shaila of Wimbledon - Jackie me (Penny) and the crowd? It must be - there can't be a Shaila and sister Neela anywhere else.
I was online today reading some article and there was a person called Dhuru and I thought of you. On impulse I googled your name and followed a trail to you which ended on this site! Jackie has searched for you over the years and is so excited to know if it really is you, what you're doing, where you are and so on.
There wasn't a 'reply' at the bottom of your message, so I've had to respond this way. Really look forward to hearing from you after all these years.

Hi,
I'm currently producing a photography project for Ealing Council as part of the redevelopment of the park, which will ultimately be displayed as part of an exhibition at the PM Gallery.
I'm looking for people who have an interesting connection to the park, seeking out quirky or touching stories from ordinary people- this could be anything from activities based in the park to sentimental attachments- it could be as simple as learning to ride a bike there as a child or the park being the site of your first kiss!
If you would like to be involved or know anyone who might be suitable, please get in touch by emailing me at ellie_csmith@hotmail.co.uk.
Thanks,

Thanks for the information you provided. Here is all I know about the band:
They were formed around 1961/1962 and featured lead singer Jeff Curtis, lead guitarist Louis McKelvey (ex-Persuaders from Twickenham; went to school with Don Craine from Downliner’s Sect), rythmn guitarist Keith Gardiner, bass player Dave Wiggington, a sax player called CB and the original drummer. In 1963, drummer Malcolm Tomlinson joined from Isleworth where he’d played in the Panthers. He’d gone to the same school as Ian McLagen (later in Faces) and I also believe drummer Mick Underwood (but was in lower years to both).
The Flames apparently did a demo for Joe Meek comprising five tracks and played in Germany (most likely Top Ten Club and Star Club). They also did cross ferry tours (with possibly Ray Charles) and played an ice rink gig with The Animals.
They were also house band at the Ealing Jazz Club. I believe that the club was open six nights a week and was closed on Tuesdays (according to Melody Maker). I’ve been through MM and can find no reference to them apart from one gig in December 1965 but that doesn’t mean they didn’t play 1962-1964 period as few gigs were advertised.
I did find a reference to a band called the Fabulous Soul Messengers who played every Sunday from 1 December 1963 but doubt this was the same group.
The photo at the link below shows the line up with Malcolm Tomlinson (second right) next to Jeff Curtis.
http://www.rock.co.za/files/upsetters_index.htm (photo of band circa 1963 at the bottom of the page)
In 1964, Tomlinson left to join The Del Mar Trio fronted by singer Jimmy Marsh who was from Fulham and had fronted the Fairlanes I believe. Another drummer came in but who? In late summer of 1965, McKelvey left to travel to South Africa and played with The Upsetters and The A-Cads.
Tomlinson subsequently joined the Noblemen in summer of 1966, which featured a pre-Jethro Tull Martin Barre. This band evolved into The Motivation, Penny Peeps and finally Gethsemane and disbanded in Dec 1968. McKelvey returned to UK from South Africa in April 1966 and headed for Montreal in October 1966 and played with Our Generation and Influence. He then returned to UK in July 1968 and picked up Tomlinson. They returned to Canada in January 1969 and formed Milkwood. Both have lived in Toronto since then.
I presume by the gigs below that Curtis replaced McKelvey with another lead guitarist and it’s possible other players might ... more >>

I presume by the gigs below that Curtis replaced McKelvey with another lead guitarist and it’s possible other players might have come in for Gardiner, Wiggington and the CB? The last gig I have found was mid-1967. If anyone can provide any more details on the band, I would be most grateful. I’m particularly interested to find out who played in the band post-McKelvey. Maybe there are some links to more well known bands?
1) 11 January 1965 – Locarno Ballroom, Swindon, Wiltshire with Sonny Childe & The Elders Consolidated (with Louis McKelvey but after Malcolm Tomlinson left)
2) 9 April 1965 – California Ballroom, Dunstable, Bedfordshire with The Escorts and Beaux Maverix (billed as Geoff Curtis Set)
3) 24 July 1965 – Locarno Ballroom, Swindon, Wiltshire with The Rising Sons
4) 22 January 1966 – Locarno Ballroom, Swindon, Wiltshire with Plain and Fancy (after McKelvey and Tomlinson had left)
5) 12 February 1966 – California Ballroom, Dunstable, Bedfordshire with Goldie & Dave Antony’s Moods and The Game
6) 7 May 1966 – Locarno Ballroom, Swindon, Wiltshire with The Ying Yongs and The Cotswold Stones
7) 20 August 1966 – Locarno Ballroom, Swindon, Wiltshire with The Showmen
8) 24 October 1966 – Tiles, London with Edwin Starr
9) 5 November 1966 – Locarno Ballroom, Swindon, Wiltshire with The Undertakers and Some Other Guys. Billed as The London Flames (Jeff Curtis)

Ah well somebody else does take a look.
I've only just found this, and having lived in Ealing until the early 70s, l find the place interesting. The Knowhere Southall board is very active. l very rarely go to Ealing these days, but l am amazed at the changes from 50 years ago. Ealing was a very safe place to be then at any time of day or night. Beyond Greenford it was quite rural until the late 50's and l cannot believe that it is not a safe place after dark anymore. ... more >>

I lived in Ealing when you could actually sleep on the Green without a worry, (unless the police woke you), The Royal Oak, the Pidgeons, and the pubs in Haven Lane, all safe, and the people great, parties every weekend, without trouble (well almost), what a pity the "Queen of the Suburbs" has lost her virtue

Those are the days l remember too Paul. l cannot believe that a friend who still lives in the area (in fact the only one still within the M25) who tells me that different gangs have different "territories" around various areas of the Broadway. I moved to Sussex in '75, so l can still clearly remember the 60's there (and still have a few memories of the 50s when l was very young). Yes, l can understand why it had the Queen of the Suburbs 'title' with the beautiful family houses up Eaton Rise and the wonderful village community around Pitshangar Lane etc. Probably all gone now. ... more >>

No Yvonne, l think Sharon means the ROYAL Oak which was a Courage pub opposite Bentalls. Western Road was nearby in Ealing and the Royal Oak was always just referred to as "the Oak"

Dis anyone go to the Day Nursery or Culmington Road? or were you ever in King Edward's Hospital (3x for me)? How about Lavells on Uxbridge Road, a newsagent/local shop with sweets and toys?
Used to go the The Royal Oak 69-71 and remember when they turned The Grange into a 'tree' all those nooks and crannies and different levels?
I too used to wait outside EB station with the crowds to hear where the parties were or just follow the crowd. Used to see Pete Townsend around town now and then. Knew the Charlbury Grove lot, especially Chalkie and Alan. Foxy and Keith - mad as hatters. Many an impromptu party up there and pool parties. Remember the dogs - Winston and Teddy? Can't remember which one it was, but one was forever getting out and wandering off. Once he ended up miles away as he'd got into the back of someone's van.
Another favourite of mine from The Royal Oak was Irish Desmond and Lofty. Also went out with a guy called Gerry (don't remember his last name)when I first started hanging out there. New Years Eve would turn into a huge snogfest at midnight! and soda syphon fights! At one stage Chalkie got a bad together and they played at the Town Hall one time. Alan (RIP) had a wicked sense of humour.
Ealing used to be gorgeous. The perfect place to grow up. Perfectly safe. As a child I would be out on my bike or with my friends all day long and only come in for meals or the loo. It has been totally ruined. No longer has that village feel. Pound shops, kebab shops, tacky architecture, they've pulled down too much and replaced it with UGLY nasty looking buildings. Half of the High Street is OK, but Bond Street is a tip now. I got tired of stepping over sick on the pavement on a Saturday/Sunday morning after screamiing hordes of pissheads had overdone it again, and so moved away 7 years ago. It's jammed with people who come in from outside of the W5 postcode, so there's no feeling of community now. I know life moves on, but it's taken none of its charm with it along the way. It's gone from Queen of the Suburbs to a Has Been......shame! ... more >>

Although I lived in Southall I had a job at The Car & General Insurance Co. in Ealing Broadway in 1946. I was just 15 years old. The offices were in an old building looking out onto the Broadway. We all occcupied the upper floors, and there was a bank directly underneath us where I used to take all the cheques and cash daily. My friend and I used to wave at the Danish students who were lunching at Lyons (right opposite) and were studying at a Business School in Ealing. No central heating in our day. We had a fireplace in each office, and had to keep putting the coal on in the winter. Can't remember ever feeling cold. When Princess Elizabeth married the Duke of Edinburgh we were allowed to go across the road on the day to the cinema there (can't remember the name) and watch the ceremony. Needless to say no work was done on that day. Ealing was a lovely place then. Most of us in Southall used to do our shopping on a Saturday at West Ealing, and it was heaving with people. Christmas especially was lovely to shop there. Happy days to look back on. ... more >>

Hi to Kelly Sidkir
Yes l was theere then and remember what they did to The Grange. I agree with all you say for whatever went on in those days, everyone was safe and knew they were. Now nobody does and I'm told its no longer safe to walk along te Broadway after 9p.m. any more. Why has this been allowed to happen??

Well as I said before, name used to be Paul Monaghan, loved ealing and evrything about it, great friends, and met some of the all time great musicians, stones, the Who, Gino Washington and the Ram Jam Band. Tom (Tomcats) anyone remember them, drummer from the 1910 Fruitgum Company,
