- Earls Barton should be proud of the late great Aubrey Leighton (Earls Barton Moptors is still there on the A45). Aubrey raced stock cars under his racing number #542 all over Britain from 1955 to 1964. He won the world championship in 1957, and was infamous for his "destroyer" cars powered by V-12 Packard engines, eventually banned. Leighton's garage was also a home-from-home to many USAF flyers from Chelveston and Alconbury and is fondly remembered by USAF veterans. Aubrey's son Keith went on to a stellar career in Formula One and Indy Car engineering. Aubrey was nicknamed "The Gov", and always wore a wide toothy grin, even when he wrecked his car against the steel fence posts at Brafield stadium. He retired in 1964 after, with only 100 yards to go to his 2nd world championship, he was "fenced" by Oxford's Fred Mitchell, a likfelong rival. My nosttalgia photo archive of British stock-car racing is www.oldstox.com
