The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
- A line taxis
- The Dereham riot of 1988 was, as has been pointed out, started when a man was arrested after he climbed the Christmas Tree. It was not the climbing or the fairy that was a problem it was the removal of lightbulbs and the throwing of them into the crowd that triggered his arrest. There were 6 officers in the Market Place at the time, and no dog handler. A dog handler did attend much later with the other re-inforcements. The whole incident was over in a couple of hours. For the first 30 minutes just 6 officers faced 300 drunken people. There were no serious injuries to any member of the public or police officer.

- this isa town for the old
- Charlie, real name David, died on his bike but stopped the town for his Funeral when hundreds of bikers from all over the world paid their respects, riding through.
The guy up the Christmas Tree who started the riot was hippy nick. He was the only guy who drank at the gem involved in it cos we were all still there partying. Woke up the next morning to findout there had been a riot in town and we missed it! Had some great interviews with the local characters ont he telly for new years day entertainment tho .
Charlies funeral was a great if very sad day. Got to mention Ady fensome who died the same week aswell.
Dereham bike shows were great, who remembers seeing baudy legging from the cops outside the tavern cos they were going to arrest him ..finally? Scottish dave mooning in a kilt on a Z1100, Big Darren 360 ing a limo, The twins who just couldnt get arrested , the imac fight?, the race, christ wacky was some quick to beat that gp100!
The memorial hall, Wurzel really made an effort to get some great bands there and for a time it was a excellent venue? Ice Age and of course ENGINE.
From reading this sounds like we lived in Derehams best times!
- Dereham has its good and bad points like any rural town. The unbfortunate thing here is that it is a very cliche community with no room for outsiders. Life is slow, but those of us with the good sense to move on still come back to visit. I do not take kindly to the fact that most Norfolkians are tarred with the same brush, we are not all inbred or thick, some of us may have an accent but the majority in Dereham are very high members of the community thus know how to talk properly. It is accents that make the world more interesting, if we were all teh same then there would be no world surely. For young people there is nothing in Dereham because of the bureaucratic tape that binds the council. How can the old people know what the younger people want? The skatepark was actually devised by young people and the council gave the go-ahead. I hope that people do not ahve a retarded view of this little town, it is better than some other towns, you could do a lot worse off you know.
- I use to like Dereham in the early 1970's not for the fights or riots you lot must be from the cities, if your brought up in the country then Norfolk is for you, what happened to the sweet Toftwood carnivals? typical country affair, it might have changed now thats not the town its the people who have moved to it, don't slag it off
- In the whole Dereham was superb but I am hearing bad things now, its a lovely town and needs updating without all the things cities get which make them terrible places to live such as skateboard parks, and night clubs. Dereham is a quiet town for quiet people most of these people are good hearted, fun, and have more brains than some of the city folk today. I would love to come back to Dereham the countryside is great!
- I'm stuck here in Portugal enjoying the hot weather... Bloody hell I miss Dereham. There are loads of tanned blokes here. No Sommerfield, though! Only "Continente" and "Jumbo"!
- meat market!!!!
- Although i now live in the centre of London you still can't beat good all dereham
- Ah yes the great New Years eve riot, I remember staggering past the tree and wondering what a van full of police were doing circling around it, wasn't until I saw the news the next day that I realised that there had even been a 'riot' and that this was officially the dullest New Years eve ever! One girl at the Sixth form had her aunt phone from the states to see if she was alright, yes the 'riot' was international news! Now a few years later there I was in Trafalger square and a certain tax was being mentioned....
- this place isant really to good for people of a younger age im not old so i dont know what it like from that view point.
if you shop anywere in dereham shop in morrisons because they have just expanded and i used to work there.
and finnaly if you want to go out its probably best to visit norwich as it is a more diverse place im not saying i hate dereham its a quite town and needs more (or at least some) nightclubs.
- if you want bad boyfriends bad food and a crap night out, then dereham is your place
- do you remember that Dereham was big in the national papers one time a few years ago cos this shop near the health food shop that was pretending to be a housing agency was actually a front for a brothel. Good cheap whores, but not very attractive - normal for norfolk.
- Um..., erm... Nah can't think of anything!
- I noticed some poor army chap saying how the local were in-bred and he did not
like it here in Norfolk, all I can say is today is the 11 Jan 2001, 15 soliders
have failed drugs test in the local base you know the one initial of S.M. and you have the neck to take the p**s out of us ??
- Why not mention golf clubs?? The Norfolk Golf and Country Club at Reymerstone (about 10 minutes form Dereham tonw centre) is a good golf club, with a great sports club attached. It has lots of younger members, as well as the old farts. If you have to live in the middle of Norfolk and you don't want to slaughter the wild life, why not play golf??
- Dereham is a lovely town incorporating new & old, for the different experiance go in to fantoosh hippy come new age traveller really cool three different shops in the town all selling different thing check them out, also award winning tatoo artist but you need to book for him well in advance down wellington road.
- I was there during the so-called riot that New Years Eve, it was more like hand bags at twenty paces, I've seen better punch-ups between old dears during Roys sale ! My missus and me couldn't beleive it when we heard the news the next day, that riot could have taken place in a phone box.
Dereham in the 70's, now that was more like it, a sort of Dodge City of Norfolk
with all the tough characters to go with it. Anyone remember the Clockwork Orange night or the annual trip to/visit from Swaffham on Xmas Eve ?
- um..nothing
- DONT CUM HERE, WE DONT LIKE OUTSIDERS.
- Dispite its' faults, I like Dereham. It's human. Of all the Norfolk towns, it is the best. After all, we could live in Chatteris, March, Wisbech...
- Aged between 14 - 26? Get a life, join DerehamYFC, see poster in Millwright Arms and other local pubs for details.
- WHO IS THE W**KER OPERATING THE CCTV ? SITTING IN PEARLS CAFE ONE SATURDAY (ON A QUARTERLY VISIT TO THE FOLKS) THE BLOKE ( OR LESBIAN ) HAD NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN HOME IN ON ANY SLIGHTLY ATTRACTIVE GIRL PASSING HIS SCREEN.
PS ARE THE MAIN ROADS SO BAD INTO DEREHAM/NORFOLK AS TO KEEP PEOPLE IN OR OUT? WE WANT MOTORWAYS, WE WANT MOTOR WAYS..........................................
- The Riot of new years eve was december 31st 1988. It was going fine as everyone
came out of the sunshine floors at midnight for the tradditional shaking of hands in the town square. Things got out of hand when a young guy went up the tree for the second time to get the Fairy( a twenty + year old tradition )
The police then pulled him down and set the Dogs on him. That is what sparked the riot.If Derehams finest had let it be the riot never would have happened.
Just another case of Big Brother essing it up again.

- Dereham is the sort of town that only seams good when you compair it to bracknall
- Dereham Baptist Church is a happening church right now - get along there - especially in the evening = 6.30
- Best Thing: Leaving it. It is the cess-pit of Norfolk. (Again IMO)
I seem to remember that East Dreary-ham made the national news once. I think it was the 1984/1985 New Year. Somebody scaled the 100ft (sorry) 33.3metre Christmas tree, during a rather large disturbance in the market place. (You may want to verify that but I am certain it was Dereham) - Soon there will also be a working railway with musuem too! New Years eve tradition is to pose as a fairy on the town christmas tree which induces mass riots. New drivers with Mark 2 Escorts gather in the Market Place every night and do some circuits. The worst thing about Dereham I lived there for 14 years. The best: there is a road out of there and an occasional bus too.
- My interests are Rollerblading and there is no where to skate!!! I think Dereham is great, if you like that sort of thing! This includes stamp collecting, old biddys with trollys that only have one wheel, also our mayor is pregnant (he is male). My bum like the old biddies fancy our luck at that hunk of a man named Ftr. Harry Wace, our local priest! Please come to visit we are all very sad as our local Gateway super market is now closed down.
- East Dereham certainly did make the national news throughout Britian when a New Years eve party got a little out of hand and a mini riot with the local police ensued. Several people were arrested and I believe it is now policy to remove the tree from the market square immediately after Christmas Day.
