looking for Maureen Rae by monique truyts (Member 10284252) on 31-Mar-2013

I'm Belgian and looking for Maureen Rae who used to live in LyttlePark Cottage Jackton East-Kilbride in the late fifties (60's, 70's ... ?).
Parents are Willie and Elise Rae . In 1957 Willie worked as a private gardener on the chicken farm nearby .
Anyone who can help me to trace Maureen ? She must be about 68 years old now .

East Kilbride Town Centre by Dougie Leitch (Member 10282387) on 28-Jan-2013
Hi Folks,
Looking for information on the Town Centre circa 1959.
When the centre was first started was Princes Mall a through road carrying traffic?
Any photos of the time would be gratefully appreciated.
Personally I do not remember the centre other than a pedestrian precinct, having been a resident in the New Town (Kelso Drive, East Mains)since 1955. We moved away in 1969

Saw some in EK News i had it sent down to me and there is a couple of pics in the spread by Bill Niven and i believe it was a road before it was pedestrianised..

  • Re: East Kilbride Town Centre by Dougie Leitch (Member 10282387) on 30-Jan-2013
Saw the spread in EK News, that's what prompted the problem. I had been in EK since 1955 and had no recollection at all of the road. Since then my younger brother managed to speak to Bill Niven and confirm the road was there.
Next question, where did the road come from and go to?
Thanks for taking the time to reply
    Dougie

I can only assume, because i don't know for sure but i think it came of the roundabout on Churchill Ave went right through the town centre passed by where the Bruce Hotel is and onto Cornwall St thats just my Guess!l'm younger than you so l only know it from pictures as well you could as your brother to go into the Central Library the have an archive of material from before New Town status you can ... more >>

    Hi Marty,
Had an update from Bill Niven, he reckons the road did indeed come from that Roundabout and was only constructed for the building of Princes Mall, previously called Princes Street.
Re Mr Niven it terminated at or just after Cornwall Way. I have a book (Old East Kilbride) waiting for me at local Library, you may have seen it already. If I get any further info I will let you know. Pan... more >>

Hi Dougie...in answer to your question..Princes Street used to have a road through it, that is why it is so wide..I moved there in 1958 as a baby and can remember it. In those days the Mushroom and Safeways were not there, nor was The Bruce Hotel. They were built when the area was pedestrianised in the early 1960's. I got a copy of an old black & white film made by STV showing you the building and... more >>

    Hi Folks,
Very interesting comments from both of you. Was in EK last weekend on a flying visit. Many changes now, Stuart Hotel been demolished, new High School on Calderwood Road. To name just a couple

Looking for Kate Henderson by Felipe (Member 10270940) on 22-Feb-2012
Looking for an old drinking buddy from East Kilbride, by the name of Kate Henderson.

In the late 90s she used to hook up with my mates and I at the Cathouse nightclub and sometimes the Solid Rock pub form time to time. She was a really lovely, chilled-out chick who rarely drank alcohol, but loved the odd 'smoke' and loved her Rock music.

...her no-booze rule often meant that my mates and I ... more >>

Hmmmm, come to think of it, i may be wrong about her living up St Leonard's way — too much drinking in my youth has mooshed my head!

Her house may actually have been in an area near Greenhills road that looked a lot like some of the houses nearer St Leonards — Y'know, the houses with a lot of external wood paneling!

I do remember her friend Pauline...She moved to the states, I think Chicago or Boston, I can't remember. If you've ever found Katie...PLEASE let me know. I saw her off to the airport when she went back to Scotland.
