The Ashcrofts I knew back in the 1960's lived in the first or second house around the corner from Heygarth in Raeburn. Sandra had a very young brother and a sister . it could be one of their kids. He would have been about 50 by now. Thanks for the info. John

Were you one of the kids who lived near 71 Heygarth Road in the late 70's? There were loads of us including my family, the Pennells at 71, Andrew at 69 I think and the Websters at 75. I'm in touch with Kathy Coyle who was at 77 and I used to babysit Gareth and Andrew Jones from across the road (parents Marian and Peter). I would love to hear from anyone who 'played out' with us. Funny as anything. All sorts of randoms on it
It's basically a landline telephone number you can ring. 0870 755 0872.
Where you get put into a waiting facility, it then connects you to another caller, you say hello, and they can choose whether to talk to you, or put you back in the queue because they don't like the sound of you or whatever hahaha.
Like a chat room with a private chat facility, but in phone terms? and it's free if you are BT Home user (as calls to 0870 numbers now free)
The number is 0870 755 0872

I well remember Plymyard Ave when it was in its original status. It had lift gates at each end as it was a strictly private road. Slack's farm was about half-way down,( wonder how Susan Slack is these days?) the army had a big piece of his property as an anti-aircraft post during WW2.After the Blitz was over the site was de-commissioned, but after D-Day it was converted into a POW camp. I remember being with my pals , Albert Roscoe, Gem Southwood, and Ken Spillsbury going down the Rake and we came upon about 200 german SS troops, who had de-trained at Hooton station marching and singing, heavily guarded on their way to the Plymyard camp for internment. Eastham was a crazy place during WW2, never a dull moment! ... more >>

Kath Slack was good friends with my mum we lived in princes avenue in the 1950s and I often went to the farm to visit She was a hard working woman and in those days milked all the cows by hand. I was born in 1940 and when I was very young?1945 I remember seeing the Italian POW's in the internment camp. they used to wave to children when we passed. They had built a stone castle or fountain on the lawn in front of the main hut. Nearby I remember in one of the fields finding a crashed German bomber. We climed up into the cockpit whith all the wires hanging down and the perspex broken and had great fun playing with the joystick. Afew weeks later it was gone. Apity we did not have cameras then. One of the POW's who was let out for farming (mangel-wurzels if I remember) called Bodo which sounds German. He impressed us all by clibing onto my friend Paul Gibbs' garage and jumping into his garden in Raeburn Avenue. There were sticklebacks in the streams there and a huge oak tree outside Heygarth Road School, with another in the field just north of the school. All under concret now! ... more >>

| ROBERT GEE AND PAUL BARKER....SADLY MISSED
|
by the hit man (Member 10121487) on 28-Feb-2008
|
|
A MAN who admitted stabbing to death two schoolboy friends out on a fishing trip has been jailed for life. Steven Heaney pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to murdering Paul Barker, 13, and his friend Robert Gee, 12. Judge Mr Justice Ognall told Heaney, of Eastham, Merseyside, that he had put a ªbrutal end to two innocent lives.º Prosecutor Richard Henriques QC said on the day the boys died — July 29 last year — they planned to fish at the Carpies pond in Eastham. When they arrived there was no room and Heaney gave them directions to the nearby Brookhurst ponds. Former Army Cadet Force detachment commander Heaney then followed them. When he found them he suggested going with Paul to look at one of the four ponds, while Robert kept an eye on the tackle and bikes. He then strangled Paul with a wire lig-ature, hit him round the head with a mal-let and stabbed him. Heaney, 37, then returned to Robert and strangled him. Robert was also stabbed several times. The followingday the boys' bodies were found.
Lifelong pals Paul Barker and Robbie Gee had every right to feel safe as they cycled to a fishing pond near their home on a July afternoon and an encounter with Steven Heaney would not have alarmed them. For Heaney, a sad loner who lived with his parents, was regarded as something of a baby. But he was a compulsive liar, lived in a fantasy world and had been acting strangely for weeks. And that Saturday his behaviour exploded into a savage double murder. Heaney lived at Eastham, Wirral, in the semi- detached home where his parents Bill, 75, and Marie, 72, had lived for about 10 years. Neighbours described the parents as ªa lovely, average old coupleº and balding bachelor Heaney as a very quiet man who kept to himself. Heaney had been a sergeant with the Army cadets. He was a good shot ° and told the youngsters he was a military policeman but was discharged on medical grounds. But the cadets did not take Heaney seriously. ªWe all thought he was a baby. We called him Heaneythe Weeny,º said former cadet Steve Brown. Heaney worked for a time as a relief manager at a pub at Eastham. He taught youngsters rock climbing on a frame behind the pub, and used to take them on canoeing trips in Wales. Paul Barker, 13, and Robbie Gee, 12, also lived at Eastham. Paul, a ªgentle giantº of a lad, was passionate about fishing, loved music and was a Phil Collins fan. Robbie, an only child, was a football fan and loved going to watch Liverpool or Tranmere Rovers with his father Lenny. Neither family was concerned when the boys set off to fish at ponds at Eastham Rake, less than a mile away. But Heaney was also fishing. They found him with four boys at a pond known as the Carpies. There was no room for the new arrivals, so Heaney directed them to another pond and 30 minutes later he packed his gear and followed them. The four boys fishing at the pond with Heaney suspected nothing as he followed Robbie and Paul to Brookhurst pond. A huge police search was launched whenPaul and Robbie had not returned home by 8.50pm. Robbie was found first, by a police dog handler, at 5.30am on the Sunday. He had numerous stab wounds in the chest. Paul was found later, about 200 yards away. Heaney had strangled him with a wire, hit him with a mallet and stabbed him repeatedly

Column 172
Forensic Testing (Road Deaths)
3.31 pm
Mr. Andrew Miller (Ellesmere Port and Neston): I beg to move, That leave be given to bring in a Bill to provide for the forensic testing of those alleged to be involved in causing death as a result of road traffic incidents.
I do so following representations made to me by the family of Thomas Wellman, many of whose members live in my constituency. Mr. Wellman died after being hit by a driver who was over the limit and whose punishment was in the same league as that given to Eric Cantona--community service. My Bill would take a small step towards dealing with the horrific issues arising from drink-driving. Throughout the European Union, 50,000 people are killed every year on the roads, which is the equivalent of an A320 airbus crashing every day of the week. The latest provisional figures for the United Kingdom suggest that 3,651 people died on our roads in 1994, which is the equivalent of an A320 airbus crashing every week that Parliament sits. If we saw road deaths in those terms, the House might take the issue much more seriously.
From time to time, the House deals with the causes of that carnage. For example, the hon. Member for Rochford (Dr. Clark) has just piloted a Bill through Committee covering the testing of new drivers. Such measures are important. Christopher Brown of the statistics directorate of the Department of Transport states:
"We cannot prevent people aging but we could prevent all road deaths if only, as road users, we took more care."
On 22 March, I received an interesting answer from the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department after tabling a number of parliamentary questions about the role of coroners: "The available information collected on deaths reported to coroners is published in an annual Home Office Statistical Bulletin. The latest bulletin, `Statistics of Death Reported to Coroners: England and Wales, 1993', issue 7/94, was published on 21 April 1994 and is available in the Library. Specific information on road deaths is not collected separately".--[ Official Report , 22 March 1995; Vol. 257, c. 201. ]
That really is not good enough. I would ask the Minister to speak to his colleagues and treat this as a matter of urgency. Coroners, police and magistrates must be required to maintain statistics properly, so that some of these issues can be dealt with in a less haphazard way.
The Bill deals with two aspects: first, testing for blood alcohol levels at the scene of an incident. The latest figures available, for 1993, show that 25 of the 52 police authorities now routinely test after all incidents; a further five test after fatalities or serious injuries; and one tests after all fatalities. In other words, 21 police authorities leave it to the discretion of the officers. My Bill would make blood alcohol testing mandatory at the incident, except when officers were otherwise committed to the safety and well-being of others. In such cases, tests would have to be done at the earliest practical time. That changes the emphasis in the Road Traffic Act 1988 to one of compulsion, by changing section 6 to read that a constable
"will require him to provide a specimen",
