The place to go for a lazy afternoon, pub quiz or last call
You can tell us more about Fareham.
Pubs
- The information on the board is Nowhere near! some poubs have been demolished, become retirement flats or just shut. I believe if you can't say something good say nothing. he same applies when people rave about a place, get the message. I take exception to genralisations, be happy? Good beer at the Limes, Fisherman's Rest and the Heathfield Arms, the latter also does good qulaity food and wine at good value. The new pubs in Town are good, The Vanguard, Chicago Rock. And if you don't like intimidatory atmoshpheres go for a "Pub Watch" pub, this is very well run in Fareham and effective at keeping the Yobs Out, or should I say the less desirable.
- The Vanguard (the one in the old church) Very nice inside. Upstairs and outside seating too, TV screens, much bigger than it looks. Never that crowded. No trainers at weekend evenings. Mixed crowd... some just 18 all dressed nice, some about 50 having a relaxed time. Not full of shouty townies so that's great. expensive nosh (much cheaper at Spoons!) Leather sofas... rarrrr
- Just wanted to say that The Fareham has improved considerably and is now possibly the friendliest pub in Fareham. Beer quality is great and the atmosphere is nothing less than excellant. Food is pretty damn good as well!
- The Fareham, Trinity Street, Fareham.
- the brass monkey...bring it on..love it
- Yep, Moda, Clinkers, and now even The Crown attract the younger, fresh faced, generation. Nuff said
- clinkers...truely legendary
- again quite a few, The Jolly Miller should be pulled down brick by brick, last refurb about 1824
the old chestnut JD wetherspoons, until it got driven into by a joyrider at 20mph and demolished
- Castle in the Air, down by Fareham Quay - good friendly atmosphere
- The brass monkey? I've been away toooo long.
- Mar'02 Good news the"Turnpike" is due to change hands at the end of this month. The new landlord is a local person whom it is hoped will restore the real feel of the "New Inn" days
- Hill Park Working Mens Club, one of the better clubs/pubs in the area. Very reasonably priced, ideal for students or anyone looking for a 'cheap night out'. Regular entertainment, suitable for all age-groups. Great, friendly atmosphere and excellent service from the barstaff are what singles out the club from the other, lesser pubs and clubs of Fareham.
- Weatherspoons: Packed most nights due to cheap drinks. The only place in town worth a visit. But when are they gonna play some music? A good meeting place for better things later in Portsmouth. I would suggest Gunwarf or Time and Envy.
Bugle: Used to be full of the type your mother warned you about, but police threatened closure so a tight door policy was adopted. Now pretty empty! Sticky carpets worn to the underlay, and beer that smells funny!
Crown: A new DJ seems to grace saturday nights now, but his music gets boring and repetative. Since the Bugle has tighened up its entry rules, all the scum seem to end up here now. And here they stay! AVOID THIS PLACE!
- The Turnpike has recently undergone some clasy renovations, and is probably the best looking pub un the area. It is also very friendly, well organised and is attracting a lot of new interest.
The food has vastly improved and they have a good selection that certainly provides value for money.
- The Turnpike in has been revamped and looks very classy now, i regluarly visit
the food is all new and is great value.
The pub has really changed and is very lively now, with a great mix of age groups. The landlords are very friendly and contribute a great attitude to a warm and friendly environment.
- The Castle in the Air at the town quay (just off the Gosport Road) has very little fresh faced persons but is also not a fogey pub. Lovely in the winter as there are two open fires, in the summer there is a raft race on the creek around August - very good for a giggle (don't forget your flour bombs).
- Pitchers sports bar is now Moda a "fun" pub. Full of fools.
- I went into the Turnpike the other week and had a great time, the real ale was good, as well as the friendly landlords. They were packed as they had an elvis impersonator and karoake, it was great.Although busy the service is good and the food was good too, i had a very nice steak, it went down lovely with the london pride, while my steve said the hsb was good.
Were going back sunday for free pool.
- The Turnpike has recently changed hands and the new landlords know very little about a pub never mind running one.Beer is rarely drinkable soall old locals have departed to The Bristish Legion to see the old landlady Angie, and some have gone to Fontley to the "Miners" for good beer food and company. Heather the landlady is super and the landlord Billy or Wills depending on how long you have known him, used to playfor Pompey. Smashing bar staff, especially Ma Larkin Michelle and Caz
- Looking for some where to go, Pitchers sports and fun bar is excellent,a great atmosphere with good djs thurs, fri and saturday together with great friendly staff. During the week its got some supberb offers on. The best pub in Fareham by far just opposite the big church. Try it your love it. P.S it also has 7 screens for the best visuals experience in town.
- again theres a lot to choose from.pitchers is good for sports cats.
- Hampshire Rose Highlands Rd (used to be the Highlands)If anyone tells you its violent then they havent been there in years.Ive used it for the last 15 Years and never had trouble. So for a good family night go to the Hampshire Rose.
- Try 'The Castle in The Air' down on the Quayside for a really nice atmosphere, a blazing fire, and a pint of hospitality.
Also, I recommend 'The Red Lion' in the town centre for its great food and ales!
- Oops, I said that "The Crown" became the "Prague Junction", actuall the "Crown bingo hall" became "Prague Junction". The Crown (pub) still exists and seems to have a disco blasting out most Friday and Saturday nights.
- "The Bucaneer" is now a Harvester
"The Crown" has is now "Prague Junction"
- The "Gordon Arms" on Gordon Road, serves the most reliable pint of HSB near the town centre and also has some reasonable live bands (normally of a Folk or Irish style). It also has a children friendly back bar and a massive (150' long) beer garden which is great in the summer.
The "Golden Lion" has changed hands since it's best beer keeping days, and has had an upmarket refit.
The "Cobb and Pen" still has good guest beers, but last time they were in there they were having problems keeping them so two out of the three barrels were duff. But the third one (might well have been "summer lightning") was perfect !
The "Cheese and Ale" has has a refit and become the Fareham, the food side of the business has been ramped up, and the beer quality is down (from what was already questionable).
The "Portland" was bulldozed down a while ago during the town center redevelopment when they moved the bus station (best thing for it !).
The "White Horse" , Wallington, is as mentioned well worth a visit, but is tiny, so if there is a crowd of you and you want to all stand in the same bar, get there early.
A good pub crawl (if you are more interested in the beer than the people) is, from the "White Horse", via "The Cob & Pen", over the bridge to the "Golden Lion", and then down to the "Red Lion", stop off in town somewhere, then drop in on the "Gordon Arms", with the option of another 3 hours in "Prague Junction".
- The good ones that I use include
- The Turnpike: good pub grub, and friendly landlords.
- The Cheese and Ale: good selection of real ales. Opposite the best Chinese in town (The August Moon).
- The Limes: this is a bit out of the way, but the beer is usually good and the food is great value.
Also - The Bugle is the best in the town centre.
- The Bucaneer is also good and features a murder (in the 1980s).
- The Crown has a disco quite often (& does pizza !).
- The Golden Lion on High Street has been in the good beer guide loads of times but is quiet (but has a pool table).
- The Limes is worth the trek out of town, rock/biker type pub with good beer and jukebox.
- Pubs to avoid at all costs:
- The Highlands, Highlands Road. Especially Friday Saturday nights.
[But] What do you mean by telling everyone to avoid the Highlands Public house 'at all costs'? I live in the Hidglands and go to 'the local' on regular a regular basis. Okay so it's got a bit of a reputation but you soon get to know every one, and once you've done that you're safe for life. The beer's not too expensive and the food's not bad. It also saves you a treck down to town and to the Crown or Bugle which are nothing special. So I would advise anyone a bit wary of the Highlands to give it a go and you'll enjoy it. If you don't feel ready for the Highlands try the Hill Park Working mens club which is frequented by similar people and has cheeper beer, the only draw back being you have to know a member to sign you in. - Admiral Cunningham, Longfield Avenue: most days of the week. A sad pub!
- The Limes: full of 45 year old bikers... without bikes! However suitable if alcoholics and drug addicts are your favourite company.
- The Portland... ok if you are over 70 and into dominoes.
- I have lived in Fareham since 1983 and have tasted most of what it has to offer!
- The Cheese and Ale Pub in Trinity Street has a fantastic selection of Ales and has a 'real pub' atmosphere.
- The Jolly Miller pub is to be avoided at all costs - it is always empty, completely devoid of atmosphere, frequented by dubious sorts and is in need of interior repair!
- The White Horse, North Wallington 235 197 Great real ale pub with good value for money, english pub food. Charming landlord and family. thoroughly recommended. Village pub ambience, darts team, cricket team and quiz night. Check it out
- The Cheese and Ale (John Devenish) was a great pub but it has been taken over by Greenalls, refitted, renamed "The Fareham" and RUINED BEYOND BELIEF. No one in the pub knows how to keep a good pint and the atmosphere has vanished. On the upside though The Turnpike is better than ever with great beers and the best atmosphere in town and the newly refurbished Gordon Arms on Gordon Road is pretty good these days. Weatherspoons are building a new 'superpub' in West Street and it will be open by Christmas. Great boost for the town centre of an evening.
