| First day Gt. Baddow

by John Blackwood (Member 10100422) on 18-May-2005

I can remember my first day in the infants in 1941 with Miss Lambert. I think it was her first year as a teacher as well. The desks where the old type for two kids with lift up seats. I can remember the girl next me got a splinter in her bottom. I got told off for trying to get it out for her, her name was Margery. We also had slats to write on.
The play ground was a dirty gravel and not very nice if you fell over. The play ground had the air-raid shelters. The toilets where still Victorian an smelt horrible. I could go on for ever but I must stop. ... more >>

| Workhouse Road/Embleton Family/can you help?

I am researching my family history on my maternal side (Embleton), and have traced it back so far to Great Baddow. In 1901,the family of my great grandfather were living at the address 'Tudor House',Widford End,Widford(Moulsham). He had been born in Great Baddow. He was an Auctioneer with his own business, and was 44 at the time of the 1901 census. His business may have been local or in Chelmsford.HIS father,my great great grandfather, was in 1901 living in Great Baddow, where he had been born,in a place called Workhouse Road.It was close to Galleywood Rd,the Baddow House Stables, the Almshouses and Duffields Farm.Because so much of Gt Baddow has been developed sice 1901, I'm not even sure if Workhouse Rd would still exist any more,or if it was maybe renamed over time. There were obviously a number of small cottages there.I would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the Embleton family in Gt Baddow,Widford or Chelmsford. Also if anybody knows whether Workhouse Rd and the cottages still exist, and the same for Tudor House,Widford End. ... more >>

Hello, I realise your posting is rather old so maybe you are no longer looking for info? My grandparents (Embleton) used to live in Baddow Road, Great Baddow. My grandfather's name was William Embleton (born 1884). I have the Embleton family tree going back to the 1600s. If you're still looking, let me know. Maybe give me your grandparents' names and I'll see if it ties in with my tree.

I am trying to trace the Deighton Family who used to live in Great Baddow during the late sixties and early seventies. All I know is that Mr. Deighton worked for the Evening Standard and his daughter Annie ( or Anne ) worked with me in the Immigration and Nationality Department of the Home Office in Central London. The latter married an Immigration Officer called possibly Paul and may have moved t o Folkestone, Kent. If anyone can possibly trace the Deighton Family, I would be grateful as there are a few of us from that era who would like to know how they are getting on. ... more >>
