• Andy Carr is the most famous resident of Great Lumley. This guy is a legend around Lummers and is remembered for his fight with the 5000 and many other stupid pranks.
• Wasn´t it the keyboard player from Dire Straits who comes from Lumley?
• Mark Knopfler (who? I hear the under 40's ask) as in Dire Straits (the band not the village)
• Mrs Maria Jones....Delivered or assisted in the birth of many babies in the village. Laid out many victims of drowning in the Wear, at the chapel where she was caretaker. Helped many folks in her street area to wallpaper their homes.She was a tiny lady, getting on in years and tough as nails. She's a resident still. Go see her when next you go in the graveyard. Say hello.
• There was only ONE famous resident in the village that I can think of. He's now an ex-resident now I suppose. Who else but Police Constable Farnsworth of the Durham Constabulary. He lived in the police house opposite Quarry Pond and had a huge " sit up and beg", with no gears.Looked like a tank! Every day he could be seen riding this thing with his pants bottoms inside his socks, straight to the "D & G" He went in the back gate, parked the bike and spent most of the shift there. Oh what's the "D&G" you say? Why the Dog & Gun of course! A nice man but if you wanted him you just had to look hard.I don't believe he ever answered the phone in the pub.My famous resident, you want to believe it!!
