Hi, I've lived in Great Lumley most of my life and have grown to love it. I've also set up a website in honour of it: WWW.GREATLUMLEY.COM Great lumley is a small village near Chester-le-Street in County Durham. It's the sort of place where everybody knows everybody so if anybody needs any information please email me, my email address can be found on my website along with pictures etc' I'm al so going to take some photo's of the war memorial plaques on Great Lumley's church gates so keep an eye out. Looking back on some of the previous threads, I know shaun o'neill and owen temple. unfortunately shaun died a couple of years back and will be sadly missed by rosie, shaun, charlotte and the rest of his family and friends. I spent some months working at this nursery while doing Nursery Training. I have a few photos of some of the very young babies in our care at this time. If any rising 53/54 year old called Norman, John, Elaine, Steven, Kathleen or Judith thinks that they may be one of the babies, please let me know and I will arrange to send you a copy of the photos. Birtley Nusery was set back from the main road to Newcastle on the right hand side. There was a scruffy looking biggish house opposite (this was the nurses home for staff) There was a cinema next door to it. I remember during my time there 'Gone With the Wind' was showing but as I travelled to Houghton after each working day I didn't get to see it. The Nursery iteself was housed in a pre-fabricated building and was appalling in todays standards. But it was home to so many little children from anly a few days old up to 5 years old. Hi Bob Robson here,i am looking for any knowledge of my family who lived in Lumley. My dad Robert Robson grew up in Fencehouses then Lumley before leaving for Birmingham in aprox 1934/5.My Gran Ann Robson married Bob Ord(miner)and had my Aunt Meggie but dont know when.After Bob Ord died(from head injuries received at the pit,I THINK) my gran later married Harry Batten another miner,who had stopp ed working below and was a picker.My Gran lived opposite the Church in the old cottages she later moved to the New Estate at the top end of the village.My Aunt Meggie was married in the Parish Church to John but I cannot remember their surname. I was evacuated up to Lumley for a while in the war and lived with Gran in the old cottage,i remember getting matey with 3 kids(a girl and 2 boys)and i think one of them may have had something to do with the farm behind the cottages as we visited the donkey alot.Hope i hit some memories.
