The Best Things in Hamstreet, Kent*

If you're around, be sure to check these things out

You can tell us more about Hamstreet.

The Best Things
  • www.PenduroSports.com 'The' Outdoor Activity Sports Shop
  • The Knowhere message board - a real hoot!!
  • The new half hourly peak time train service that starts in December will be a boost. The surgery also got an award for being the best in the UK. The plan is to increase its capacity with the prize money which will be even better.
  • UPDATE TO OLD COMMENT IN 'WORST THINGS': Hamstreet station now has two electronic info displays updated in real time, a flat screen display in the office and brand new Turbostar 170 trains on all services. What's more, a new improved timetable comes in in December with up to twice as many trains planned. Good things come to those who wait.
  • Update: Hamstreet now has brand new diesel Turbostar trains which are very smooth and clean. The timetable is being reviewed, we hope that this will mean more trains, not less.
  • The wildlife around the village, from the cheery wood pigeons around the village to the unique marsh frogs down by the canal. In the woods, you may even hear a nightingale. Check it out!
  • The sense of community.
  • Hamstreet Woods in spring - a carpet of anenomes in March and a carpet of bluebells in May. Orlestone Forest is also worth a visit - evergreen woodland.
  • Nobody seems to have mentioned the woods yet, which have great bridleways for cycling and paths for walking. Orlestone Forest (also in Hamstreet) is worth a visit too). The Hamstreet extreme mountain bike club meet up every Wednesday evening throughout the summer (2003). Come along if you think you're up to it!
  • Hamstreet Woods. Beautiful decidous woodland. Loads of walks. Particularly attractive in spring with the bluebells and anenomes. Orlestone Forest coniferous woodland nearby has picnic site too.
  • Hamstreet Woods are well worth a visit, especially in spring with the bluebells and anenomes. There are wide rides and narrow winding paths to be explored. For coniferous woodland, there's Orlestone Forest (1 mile).
  • Hamstreet Woods are a wonderful asset to the area. There are wide open 'rides' as well as tiny undulating paths. There are thick forested bits and open tranquil glades. The woodland here is deciduos (nearby Orlestone Forest is evergreen). It is particaularly beautiful in spring with anenomes and bluebells. The vast variety of pubs in the Hamstreet area is also a great asset.
  • Having a station. Costcutters is superb for a village store. The rural nature of the surrounding area. The pubs. The Country Fayre weekend in June. The firework display/bonfire in November.
