Cringing Cult of Celebrity in Hamstreet, Kent*
Famous residents and ex-residents.
You can tell us more about Hamstreet.
Cringing Cult of Celebrity
- Bloke who played bass in Eddison Lighthouse (number one hit in 1970) apparently lives in Kenardington (2 miles away).
- Joseph Conrad the famous writer used to live in Capel Road apparently.
- The guy that did the Yellow Submarine cartoon lives around here somewhere. Somebody told me Kate Bush once lived here. No idea if it's true or not.
- The guy that wrote the Mars jingle (a Mars a day...) used to come in the Blue Anchor a lot. Dunno if he's still around. He had a cartoon series on national TV too I think.
The guy from the bank adverts was in that same pub too - "We wanna be together!"
- My sister says she saw HArry Secombe here, but I don't believe her!
- Anabelle Giles and the 'Help Squad' once came to fix the bells at nearby Kenardington church, for a wedding.
- Hamstreet itself is famous for appearing on every stamp in the UK back in the early nineties. This was to mark 200 years of the Ordnance Survey whose first map was of the local area. John Craven even did a countryfile special from the village.
Blue Peter once visited the village too. I think it was for comic relief, it seemed to involve turning a map upside down and pretending Dungeness was a mountain and climbing along the pavement! 'Mountain Farm' in Hamstreet seemed an apt starting place.
- Doug Morton formerly of Mountain Farm (now in Australia) published a book on his war memoirs 'Lucky Doug'.
Steve Read, a native of Romney Marsh who lives in Gloucestershire but regularly visits the village has published four books on Romney Marsh and rural life.
I believe there is also a guy from the village trying to get a book published on his travels of England and Wales visiting every lighthouse.
- Bob Mortimer lived a mile up the road. Vic Reeve's 5 miles away, house now owned by Lilly Savage. Jan Francis (actress), 4 miles. Tom Baker and Joanna Lumley have been known to frequent the area occasionally. Duncan Goodhew used to attend Duke's but decided against moving here. Mickey Pearce (Only Fools) used to run Duke's.
