| Dog & Bacon memorial plaque
|
by Nick Fleischmann (Member 10245347) on 5-Mar-2010
|
Hello. I'm trying to find regulars at the Dog & Bacon who remember the odds and ends in the pub before it was refurbed at the takeover by Hall and Woodhouse.
I'm told there was a memorial plaque [with a photo] to Clive Richardson. Reason for asking is he may have been a relation not seen for a long time. I have info linking him to the pub and would now like to find out if this memorial was actually there. If so, I would like to briefly check out with anyone with knowledge of his background if he is actually a relative eg by checking birthplace, parents etc.
It seems this plaque must have been a gesture of friends who presumably would have known something about him. I'm assuming also some of them would have been regulars at the pub and could eg put me in touch with the former landlord or landlady.
Any info gratefully received
Nick

Hi John,
Do you remember sisters Linda and Janet Barr? I remeber you and believe you use to be friends with Derek White. Some of the pupils I remember at the time are Maureen Dowley, Elaine Murphy, Michael Johnson and Doreen Hogdon. I was in Bodiam House and use to clean the brass every morning to earn my house point.
I now live on the Isle of Wight and have done for the past 20 years. I have three children and a grandchild.
Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards Janet.

Janet,
I was at Warnham Court from 1962 to 1963, and have been trying to trace some old friends.
Robert Fry, Peter South and last but not least
Maureen Dowley who you mentioned, I remember she came from Abbey Wood.
Do you remember these people or have you heard
from any of them.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your reply. I have not heard from anyone else other than Yourself at the moment. I do remember the people you mentioned in your email, well at least their christian names.
It's seems that this site is not used to it's full potential as the replies on here are very minimal.
I have found it difficult to track down the females we went to school with as I would assume they have all married and have different surnames like Myself.
I was sad to dicover that Warnham court closed in 1996 and although a listed building internally it has been converted into flats.
I enjoyed my stay at Warnham Court and have many fond memories.
I hope our search for other school friends is successful, will be nice to exchange more memories.
Janet.

| 60's beat/mod/R&B bands from Horsham and surrounding areas WANTED
|
by Paul (Member 10233578) on 24-Nov-2008

HI,
I’m based in Sussex I also collect records and am completely obsessed with the 60s.
I am working on a project of putting together a compilation LP entitled “60s Savages from Sussex and The South Coast”.
I’m looking for members of 60s Beat/mod/R&B/Soul and even Psychedelic bands from Sussex and the South Coast area’s during the years 1961 -1967.
I’m interested mostly in hearing your stories, seeing pictures and hopefully you may have old acetate demos, (or if you were one of the lucky groups who actually managed to record a 45)... It would be so fantastic if you would contact me and maybe contribute a song or two to my compilation LP project.
What got me into wanting to make this LP was when I managed to purchase a copy of Horsham’s The Beat Merchants debut 45 ‘Pretty Face’ on Columbia. It made me think that surely there were other bands from the area that never got as lucky as The Beat Merchants.
If you were in a band from the 60s and were based in East or West Sussex please feel free to contact me and reminisce to me about your times in the 60’s.
Because if I have enough material I may even try and write a column for 60’s beat magazine Shindig about the Sussex & South Coast BEAT SCENES.
CONTACT ME at SONIC3691@AOL.COM
Cheers Paul

| CHARITY YEARPLANNER SCAM
|
by gayguy (Member 10209521) on 1-Oct-2008

As printed in the Mirror Newspaper:
'CONMAN LYON BACK ON PROWL'
SORTED
Penman & Sommerlad 05/04/2007
"HERE'S an alarming sight: habitual charity conman Peter Lyon arriving at the offices of a charity fundraising operation.
Lyon's made a pile by raking in funds that kind donors think will help worthy causes.
He lives in a big detached house and drives a top-of-the-range Merc with personalised plates.
And it's no wonder he's loaded when you look at his string of charity scams.
First there was Barrington House Publishing Company, run by Lyon until it was put into compulsory liquidation with debts of more than £2million - and the shyster was made bankrupt.
Out of its ashes rose Barrington House Publishing Corporation.
As a bankrupt, 44-year-old Lyon could not be a director but he managed to be the highest paid person in the building, netting £176,400 a year plus a £103,000 company Merc.
The money came from the £3.5m the company raked in by conning firms into paying for adverts in wall-planners, saying the cash would help sick children.
Mainly it helped sick conmen like lying Lyon, of Halsall, Lancs.
Barrington House Publishing Corporation, aka McKenzie Campbell Publishing, was also shut down by the High Court.
But that sort of thing doesn't stop someone as greedy as this slug. His next charity fund-raising scam was called Hamilton Forbes Ltd.
Again, you wouldn't have found Lyon's name on the company books.
But he got the lion's share of the proceeds - or, as the Insolvency Service put it, he was one of the "main benefactors" from the money they got from wellintentioned advertisers.
The watchdog added that the company accounts were "at best inaccurate, at worst misleading".
Only around 5p from every £1 raised went to help sick children, not that donors were told that.
And the advertisers didn't even get any decent publicity from their plugs on the wallplanners - because only a pitiful handful were ever printed and distributed.
Which brings us to the Honeyrose Foundation, a small charity helping terminally ill adults, that Lyon's was visiting.
A noble cause, but possibly run by somewhat naive individuals.
After getting a call out of the blue from someone they'd never heard of, they struck a deal to allow this stranger to raise money on their behalf.
The charity gets £2,500 a month. Which is nice.
But when we asked them what proportion of the total amount of money raised in their name this represented, Honeyrose admitted ... more >>
- Re: CHARITY YEARPLANNER SCAM
by gayguy (Member 10209521) on 1-Oct-2008
...they didn't know.
According to the charity, the fundraiser who approached them was an Andrew Garside, a sole trader who ran something called Chestnut House.
The charity didn't have a landline for Garside but gave us his mobile. We've called it repeatedly and it's never been answered.
Garside may be a sole trader of Chestnut House but he is also the secretary of a company named Armstrong Faith Ltd.
Its director is a Lisa Colford - who just happens to be a Peter Lyon crony who worked at his Barrington House, McKenzie Campbell and Hamilton Forbes scams.
We've no idea how much Chestnut House or Armstrong Faith are getting from the deal because it's only just been set up.
But the involvement of Colford is not a good sign.
And the fact we spotted Lyon arriving at its offices is nothing short of horrifying".

Clean yourself up, learn how to speak and write properly and then come back to our town which has just been given the accolade of the 2nd best place to live in England. It's a pity you didn't open your eyes when you were here to see what a lovely place it is.
Still at 14 you've got a lot to learn.
