You can tell us more about Ipswich.

Pubs
  • Well, well, well, the "grand""parents" of the yobs in vermin infested places like the belstead arms {& other low dives in ipswich} so admired the arch atheist stalin that they wrote loving letters of admiration to IT,It in return sent soviet "engineers","builders",whoever to construct an underground railway system under lousy class conscious ipswich modelled on the comunist one in moscow. It is now closed,{i would suppose there are enough insect tunnels under lousy ipswich-stiill,ironic the admirers of stalin are so "loyal" to the "establishment"
  • SCUM=BELSTEAD ARMS
  • Belstead arms is the most low lived piggery on earth
  • The royal Anglian regiment are scum, filth & can be summed up in one word,a very small word composed of four letters,it begins with F & it ends with k.
  • This filthy,Belstead arms should be closed down on a permanent basis & either bulldozed or else it could be used as a home for stray dogs & the area sealed off with a high fence BUT prior to that it MUST,MUST,MUST be disinfected from top to bottom,{dogs deserve a nice place to live after all}fumigated, exorcised & sprayed with sweet smelling aerosol.
  • In the scummy, swinish Belstead arms they must be spitefully pleased that snobby, blond Louise from Felixtowe looks down on me thanks to her sidekick from Hatfield road, ipswich.Apparently she was not interested in men BUT of course if I had been a Lib Dem agnostic with a snitched up toffee nose & a "top" cissy job at BT or ICI,OH!,how much different, upstairs, downstairs,in my "ladies" {left-wing} chamber!
  • I SUPPORT GENERAL PINOCHET & GENERAL VIDELA.
  • Belstead Arms! (Chantry) avoid this place at ALL costs, the landlord is an absolute tosser along with the rest of the alcoholic losers who drink there.
  • The disgusting Belstead arms not only serves minors but IS RUN BY MINORS!!!
  • Anywhere but the low lived, filthy, boorish, low class, lying Belstead arms.
  • the holbrook swan.
  • Can't beat the Steamboat
  • Zing is the best bar in Ipswich (near fire & ice) No smoking bar (you can smoke out on their patio) with really friendly staff, nice customers and the best door staff.
  • Mannings, and The Railway in Westerfield was/is great.
  • I go to the Golden Lion on Corn Hill...its mainly older people there, and i'm usually the youngest there at 17 (be prepared, they do usually ID if you look under 21) but feel very welcome by the customers and bartenders alike. Friendly faces, tasty food (its a Wetherspoons) and a nice proper pub atmosphere in the middle of town! If you like to sit outside, try Mannings which is just next door. Its more expensive, but more 'pub-like' and a better sanctuary. Not as friendly though and over 18s only!
  • The Man on the Moon on Fircroft has the best atmosphere ever. Love The Blackhorse too!
  • The cock and pye is lively and nice, the black horse caters for an alternative crowd. Ollies cocktail bar is always buzzing and the staff are very friendly, same goes for ice.
  • Most full of townies. Rude bar staff at the Golden Lion. The Swan and the Black Horse are quite friendly and have good music.
  • Black Horse is a nice pub :o) near the police station..
  • The Golden Lion is our regular haunt, and also Cricketers but there is also places like Ollies which is a cocktail bar not to be passed by.
  • Many a pub in Ipswich may have a fresh faced crowd but yet always attract an old crooner. Try Digby's at suffolk college for day time chilling, a juke box and a bit of pool. Wetherspoons Cricketers and Golden Lion are legendary for double shots and mixers for £1.99, inc, red bull-vodka! Cricketers has a good beer garden for the summer by far, and you even forget it's a wetherspoons. For football head to the Cock and Pye, it boasts 17 screens or something. quite cosy and even a little beer garden. Hogs head is also a good shot, easy music and not too expensive. Aviod yates, churches, NY exchange and all wanky places full of townies in shirts and shoes.
  • Most studenty- the Golden Lion Most popular- the Cricketers Most 'fresh faced' crowd- the Arboretum Most scary- the Cock & Pye Most friendly bar staff- The giles Tavern Most homely- the Greyhound Most old people- McGuinty's Irish pub Most scary looking bouncers- the Hogshead Everywhere's quite strict on ID which is a little annoying when you're 21 and you get asked!!!! (The Golden Lion, I'm talking about you...)
  • brewery tap saint val(ex steamboat, earl roberts)is the lady in charge.
  • The milestone is a big pub which is always packed, the drum and monkey is good also.
  • grinning rat, giles tavern
  • D-PLACE, great place to go pre clubbing!!great music, great atmosphere and fab cocktails!!(ordinary drinks too tho)
  • Man & the Moon for locals.
  • Golden lion is a pub most people know and have been to once or twice. Bit dull tho, aside from being packed most of the weekend (with people who shout at your scuffy shoes). The cock and Pie is quite good, bit pricey but loads of tvs if you're into that kinda thing. The Black Horse has a good selection of live Metallica c.ds in the jukebox. Be warned- you may receive funny looks if you don't stick to the heavy metalguidelines when using the jukebox, This pub has a pool table tho, and you know what? It only costs 50p if you're luucky enough to get a go that is. Many pubs in Ipswich sell alcoholic beverages, not to the underage tho, obviosly.
  • Don't forget to call into Mannings Pub on the square where Peter and Jane will gladly convert your hard earned cash into food & drink. Make sure you claim your skiers discount and ask Peter about his Missionary work in Soho!!!
  • The Brewery Tap - great pub, bizarre billiards game thing which is strangely compelling and the coldest pool room in the world anywhere. Go, now. The best Guiness this side of the Irish Sea.
  • a night out in Ipswich is not complete without a visit to Siscos trendy fun pub
  • the grinning rat, landlord jacko is a good bloke all staff are friendly especially tim and claire.lots of well kept beer and wines to choose from and occaisionally a band on.
  • O'Neil's is good, esp on St.'s night (cannot remember which Saint - Soz)
  • the grinning rat on saint helens street has a great selection of beer and the landlord jakko is a real friendly bloke all ages are welcome and tim the cook does a mean sunday roast, they occaisionally have bands on its well worth a visit with your mates or your great aunt ida.
  • Update on pubs June 2001: If you're an old git (i.e. over 25) then Churches/The Golden Lion/Bar IV/Bar Keo/New York Exchange are the best places to go and drink in town and the Woolpack is the best local ever - even if you're NOT gay. Avoid Yates if you have more than one brain cell (and it's not located between your legs) The Cricketers is very cheap, but has lighting akin to Boots the Chemist. The Global Net is no longer there nor is the Wig and Pen, nor is the Market Bar/Butts or The Newt and Cucumber although most of these are just called something different.
  • Hogshead, good beer, non-threatening atmosphere (unlike some of the other places in town), cool music!
  • The Newt and Cucumber was an excellent pub for telling a tale over a fine ale. Unfortunate that it has been sold.
  • The Black Horse has got a very good jukebox - and needs livening up!
  • No.10's on the Cornhill
  • the golden lion and the swan r the best places 2 go
  • Is the woolpack a peado's dream pub???????,,,.......
  • The Steamboat. Mc Gintys. The Giles... a good pub, but occupied by too many estate-agents & insurance workers!!
  • Yates has to be the place to be before a night at Kartouche especially on a Friday night. Cricketers however is lively (although no music) but is so cheap it doesn`t matter!!
  • Yates' is a great laugh. Reasonably priced drinks, and a good crowd within. Crickiters is a lighter pub with good well priced food (and drink!) Also the Old Rep's worth a trip on your way into town, with The Golden Lion is well worth a visit esp. for Vodka + RedBull enthusiasts! A crawl round the pubs is reccommended and easily done as they are all pretty close together!
  • A must for Ipswich currently must be BAR IV formerly "The Black Adder" this bar is part of the Greenlands chain (see vodka bar Colchester) an excellent friendly atmosphere with 20+ clientele good wines, spirits and cocktails, a fun place to start or end the evenings before hitting Pals, Liquid, Kartouche, SA etc.
  • McGintys - good for the 'fresh faced' crowd - cheap drinks. The Cricketers - good drinks offers most weekends. O'Neills/Golden Lion/Flour & Firkin - good for Students.
  • Cock and Pye, best in Ipswich...come back jamie
  • Great White Horse Hotel if you say it's a pub. The crowd of the Cricketer's is quite old but pub food is nice there. Yate's is a bit dodgy I like the old Rep because the place is nice. It used to be a theatre. Mannings is good when you want to have a chat with people especially on the week ends when evry other pubs are packed and loud ! People from Number ten are really friendly and good terasse for the summer outside You need to go to the Vodka Bar if you love Vodkas (on the docks) And the Bar 4 on St Nicholas Street is really good during the week ends !
  • My regular routine = yates, firkin, cock, barB, newt, with some added extras when im up for it. We have a HUGE choice of pubs in Ipswich.
  • Why has nobody mentioned Yates's Wine Lodge? It's the best place in town for a really good night out.
  • The student bar is somewhat of a disapointment. It has the potential to be an exellent venue but fails to create a comfortable atmosphere. Although busy during the day, it is usually quite empty in the evenings. A new bar which has just opened is one of the 'Old Orleans' chain. I heartely recommend it, even though it is a bit pricey. If you do go there, find the barman called Simon and ask him to mix you a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. A cocktail of truely science-fiction proportion. I work in a bar in the centre of town called the Falcon, ask for Brian.
  • Best pub is The Greyhound on Henley Road - fantastic home-cooked food, well-kept Adnam's beer, nice decor, good atmosphere. Golden Lion (formerly The Vaults) is a JD Wetherspoon's pub - good for cheap beer and food, but full of tramps. Mannings' a couple of doors away is good, also Great White Horse in Tavern Street.
  • The Fat Cat on Spring Road (in what used to be the Spring Tavern). The original Fat Cat in Norwich has a reputation (justified) as a pub where you can get a wide range (20+) of well-kept real ales. The fact that many are specials or rarities makes it a great tickers' pub. The Ipswich Cat is a joint venture between the original and Woodforde's brewery (of Woodbastwick, Norfolk), brewers of award-winning ales such as Wherry and Norfolk Nog. This is going to be a "Don't Miss" pub if you like real ale rather that fizzy crap.
  • Three pubs worth a look in Ipswich (Tony Green)
    • The Tap & Spile, St. Helen's Street, has an ever-changing range of real ales (over 400 different ones in the last 2 years)
    • The Plough, Dog's Head Street carries ten well-kept real ales, frequently changing, but not quite as adventurous as the T & S
    • The Royal Oak, Felixstowe Road has a special offer - Draught Bass (Well kept) at only £1.25 a pint.
  • Here are some more: Malt Kiln, Wherry Quay were recommended. Other pubs: Wig & Pen, Spread Eagle, The Vaults, Newt & Cucumber.
  • The Mulberry tree is a halfway decent pub - better than Traders and the Malt Kiln where all the 15 year olds hang out.
  • The Swan, for the best pint in town.
  • Ipswich is getting there for ok pubs - centered around the town centre, check out 'The Global Net' 'The Wig and Pen' 'McGinty's', and if you're in to late night drinking (but for no other reason) go to 'The Chicago Rock Cafe'. In the summer, 'The Market Bar' is popular - other places such as 'Butts' and 'The Newt and Cucumber' are ok for a one-off, or if you want to gawp at bearded real-ale drinkers - go to 'The Plough.'
  • Since September '95, two dead, town-centre bars have re-opened as exciting prospects (McGuinty's and, to a lesser extent, Mannings), Cock+Pye has found a new lease of life (and holds a top pub quiz on a Wednesday night), Global Net has opened and two new clubs have appeared (Chicago's and Double O club which ACTUALLY manages to run a good comedy night on a Wednesday) with another to open soon (if the rumours are to be believed).
  • The Waverley is more than a good pub. It does good bar food, and has a very good restaurant attached. It is a hotel, and I stayed there for 7 months. You can play air hockey on the pier, or take a walk along the sea front, past the Spa Pavillion, to the Fludier's Arms. Then turn round and walk back. Don't go inside, as its really awful. We used to go there every night, but only to remind ourselves how good the Waverley really was.
  • Find the very informal Ipswich European club in the Plough on a Friday night from 9pm. Popular with foreign students, au-pairs and europhiles generally. Doesn't make for a fun night, however...
  • Rob says the Swan is shit.
  • The Falcon, near the town center. The Blue Coat Boy , this was a punkers hangout.
  • Why the Heathlands of course.
  • Avoid estate pubs and just concentrate on the main ones in the town centre, we now have all the leading chains.
