hi, i was searching for properties on islands of scotland and found two properties on the isle of luing for around £40,000. they looked perfect!!! my question is how do you live on the isle of luing and work on mainland scotland? is it possible to get to work almost every day you have to? also what is life like on an island? is it all families that live there, how may children are there on th e island? any information would be very much appreciated.
thank you ... more >>

Hi Adele
We lived on Luing from February 1993 to August 2001. We have 5 children and its a lovely place for younsters to grow up but there's not much to do for teenagers. Both myself & my husband worked in Oban (full-time) and if you have a 9 - 5 job there is no problem with the ferry. The trouble starts when you need to be back later in the evenings. The vehicle ferry stops at 6.15 all year round, apart from Friday & Saturday evenings in the Summer when it continues until 10.0. During the Winter there is a passenger ferry, by booking only, at 7.30 and 10.00. Outwith these times there is a charge of around £30 for a "special" ferry. If you get back to the terminal at 8.00 in the evening, you're stuck until 10.00. I must add that Winter is September to May and Summer is June, July & August. The passenger ferry runs until 10.00 during the Summer and on Friday and Saturday nights it continues until 11.30. Sundays there is no vehicle ferry. Passenger ferry starts at 11.00 and runs until 6.00 with a break from 1.00 to 3.00 for lunch.
Having said all this, if you can live within the ferry timetable its a great place to live. There is a great community spirit. There is a thriving primary school with around 23 children, a shop/post office and a church - but no pub. Everyone knows everyone else and there is no crime.
We moved down to Nottinghamshire as our parents are nearer and we wanted our children (youngest is 14) to experience life nearer to civilisation. We're going back over Easter to visit friends and I'm sure it will be a wrench to leave again.
If you want to ask me anything, please contact me. I'll try to give you an unbiased answer.

I found your message interesting as we are hoping to buy the caravan site at the northern tip of Luing. We love the area, and feel pretty clued up about how life might be, but could really do with hearing about the worst bits! We have two small children (aged 3 and 1) so would be attending the scholl and playgroup, and getting to know people that way.
Our main concerns are the weather during the winter, and trying to supplement our income with work locally. Although we could live on the income it wouldn't be much fun, and would need just a little more coming in.
If you have the time I would love to hear what you think about the island and the life up there,
kind regards,

Hi my name is Carolyn and I spent all of my summers as a child in Toberonochy, I am trying to see if anyone rents out cottages for a holiday?
I currently reside in Florida USA, so it is quite a journey for me to fly home.......would like accomodation in Toberonochy if possible. Thanks!

I lived on Luing for around 10 years. It is a unique experience, and something special for people who can get on with everyone and anyone; jobs are scarce and self-employment is for those who can adapt to the circumstances quickly. Try it and be prepared for anything. Great fun, great people and truly different to mainstream life.
Always use a lawyer to buy or rent property.

Mouse Tracker
Mouse Tracker
|
|
This script shows how to track the mouse pointer on the page using event
capturing. As you move the mouse over the page, it's current position is
displayed in the browser's status window.
How it Works
First, the script defines two global variables to hold the x and y coordinates
of the mouse. Then it specifies the getMousePosition() function as the
handler for the onmousemove event of the document object. Note that Netscape
requires an extra step to enable capture:
var mouseX = 0;
var mouseY = 0;
if (isMinNS4)
document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEMOVE);
document.onmousemove = getMousePosition;
Whenever the mouse is moved over the page, the function reads the coordinates
from the Event object and saves them in the global variables. With Netscape,
this event object is passed as an argument. In IE there is only one global
event object which is used instead:
function getMousePosition(e) {
if (isMinNS4) {
mouseX = e.pageX;
mouseY = e.pageY;
}
if (isMinIE4) {
mouseX = event.clientX + document.body.scrollLeft;
mouseY = event.clientY + document.body.scrollTop;
}
window.status = mouseX + "," + mouseY;
return true;
}
Then for demonstration purposes, the function displays the coordinates in the
browser status window but you can always get the coordinates using the global
variables.

the phrase "advertise myself" was a direct quote from my girlfriend.I did not send you the virus on purpose. I think everybody on the Greenock board was sick of the repribates.Angie is in the middle of what ?. What has upset you now Andy ?just tell me the page number and I'll go and read it myself.
- Re: what time did you find this page ??
by co.co (Member 10011530) on 15-Jul-2000
I think I just figured out whats wrong with you.I just read the Greenock page.Well, when you put the music on the Wemyss Bay page I thought, Good and preceded to Copy and go off pasting around to find boards, I failed about four times( can only remember one (one of the Whitley Bays) but I didn't want to mention that to you because I got into an arguement with an English person about the Scots not being Hooligans.(there's even a quick reference to yourself by the use of the phrase "almost all".
Anyway I found two more pages, one of which I told you about and the other I told my cousin about since it was her home town.It only looks as if I was suddenly finding them because I wasn't reporting every detail. I found this page in the same manner that you found that the Skelmorlie page didn't work and If you look at Whitley Bay it says some music when in fact theres none.God this is hard work.If you had really wanted to know who Shitlet was you should have left me to do it.
I have never been to Annan but I'm going there in a minute. So what else is wrong with you ? ... more >>
